XHTML 1.0 and lang

Hi Danny, I'm curious about the latest change you made to Www.wikipedia.org template/temp. I realize that legacy browsers don't support the xml:lang attribute, which is why a redundant lang attribute is typically recommended. But we introduced language metadata to that page so that browsers can use the right fonts for each language. Do you happen to know if any legacy browser will render the page differently based on the lang attribute's presence? Screen readers, perhaps? If so, I can convert the page to HTML 4.01 Strict. My point in removing the lang attribute was simply to reduce the page's file size. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 17:58, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm actually working on brand new code of all www pages, which will be much more semantically correct and much more accessible, as well as the code should be shorter even with keeping both lang and xml:lang. I also think all WMF pages should use the same DTD (or maybe rather "language"), thus XHTML 1.0 (either Strict or Transitional).

Cool. Please be sure to test the code on a variety of browsers. I use a Mac, so I can help with any testing you need there.

Also, do you happen to know of any Web-based HTML minifiers (ones that remove whitespace and comments)? Ideally, we could have Www.wikipedia.org template contain just the minified code, and Www.wikipedia.org template/temp contain the original, neatly-formatted code. Then, we could have sysops run the temp code through the Web-based minifier whenever they need to update the live portal. If I can't find one, I'll look into writing one.

Sure, I have 13 browsers installed and some of them in couple different versions. Mac testing is welcome though.

Re minifying: I am not convinced it's the best idea as well as it's really necessary. Especially when it would cause another work to sysops.

Right, that's why I'm looking for a solution where you just need to copy-paste into a textbox, press a button, and you'll get the minified results. It's not essential, especially if your new code is much shorter. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 21:33, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Well, the only thing I remember where we did not have the same opinion is two years old, IIRC some processes about translations for Wikimania, and I've actually even forgotten that looong time ago. ;-) Anyway, thank you for wishes, and re the perm: I'm not sure I'm known enough for local users here. (And actually same as you ;-) - I also needed to do something earlier than after at least week of regular procedure.) Kind regards.

Celkem logicky když je to jednorázový tool pro českou Wikipedii, která má určitou sadu vyznamenání a na ona vyznamenání určitá kritéria, je to pouze v češtině a pouze pro českou Wikipedii.
Jinak tak nějak netuším, proč to řešíte tady a ne na české Wikipedii a navíc anglicky, když jsme oba Češi.

Ahoj, psal jsem Pod lípu, že máme neustále nějaké oznámení na české Wikipedii. Opravdu si nemyslím, že je to vhodné, navíc na každé stránce a bez možnosti, aby si to mohli uživatelé nechat jedním kliknutím skrýt. Takovýto druh reklamy by na Wikipedii být neměl a taky žádná jiná mutace tolik oznámení nemá a už vůbec ne na 14 dní kvůli nějakému veletrhu. Prosím tě tedy o zkrácení doby, po kterou trvá oznámení (1-2 dny), vyřešení jinak, např. přes box na hlavní stránce nebo úplné zrušení. Problém je taky v tom, že tato oznámení nejdou upravit nebo smazat přímo na české Wikipedii a jsou nám nucena z mety.--Sevela.p 13:26, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Translator, We need you!

Dear Danny B.,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

Dear Danny,

as you probably know, I lost an access to OTRS, becaused I was accused from revealing private information from there. One of those informations are about getting part of your real name to Meta. But I didnt get it from OTRS. I know it from another user, who told us that, because people on WMCZ's stall on Book Fair, were looking for you under your real name. In fact many Czech Wikimedians knows your real name.

Danny, I have a Wikipedia template Template:Gazetteer of Australia.

It should have named parameters "id" and "feature" What I need is for the url in it to read: http://www.ga.gov.au/bin/gazd01?rec={{{id}}} if id is defined and http://www.ga.gov.au/place-name/PlaceDetails.jsp?submit1={{{feature}}} if feature is defined.
