Recentchangeslinked[edit]

Hi Elian. You may remember I asked about Skanwiki on #wikimedia? I have now made a first attempt at starting this at Skanwiki.

I also followed your advice about using Recentchangeslinked. I have made a template Template:RecentchangesSkanwiki which has the link to Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:Skanwiki, and then I made a new template, Template:Skanwiki, which contains the previous template, pluss the categorisation Category:Skanwiki. This SkanWiki template is to be put on top of all articles related to Skanwiki. Each page will then get a link to the latest changes to Skanwiki-categorised pages in bold on the top of the page.

Now, there's only one problem. It seems Recentchangeslinked only tracks the latest change to an article, not all changes. Have a look for yourself. Do you know of a way around this? BjarteSorensen 13:15, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I see the problem. IMO this is a case for a bug report/feature request, because one would expect the recentchangeslinked behaviour to be consistent to normal recent changes. I'll try to contact the devs about it in the next days... Some hints to my current babies here on meta where I'd really like to have scandinavian input: On Presentations we collect Slides for presentations, if something exists in your languages, add it there. Promotion and Leaflet are for collection and development of promotion stuff, add to it what you have. Greetings and good luck for Skanwiki :-) --Elian 01:24, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Cool. Thanks for that! Yes, it only makes sense if the behaviour of Recentchanges and Recentchangeslinked were the same. I've added a Norwegian (nynorsk) poster to Promotion, and asked User:Dittaeva if he might wanna put his presentations in nynorsk out as well. BjarteSorensen 02:30, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I added a bug at http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1803, and it has already received 5900 votes :), but it is not assigned yet. However, despite its limitation, I find it very useful in the Skanwiki work, and a link is implemented on all pages part of Skanwiki. I also think other users are finding it useful.

On another note, Special:Watchlist is behaving in the exact same way, although you'd also expect that to behave like Special:Recentchanges. I added this in a comment on the bug. Bjarte 14:31, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Guidelines for the maintenance of the MediaWiki namespace[edit]

  • Halló Elian! As mentioned during the meeting in Munich I want to let you know about required maintenance in the MediaWiki namespace at various wikis.
  • [1] shows a typical example of broken html links which should be fixed.
  • You can find a list of required changes at most xx.wikipedia and xx.wikinews.
  • My opinion ist that we should have a central place at [[meta:]] to list adaptations required by the current / coming versions of the MediaWiki software which need to be done in the MediaWiki namespace. cy:Special:Recentchanges does not have the "Hide minor edits | Show bots | Hide logged in users" links as en:Special:Recentchanges etc. The change is not trivial because three MediaWiki need to be changed to achieve that functionality. Not every wiki has the human and knowledge resources of the "leading" wiki's. A knowledge transfer based on a updated "what to do" would save valuable resources everywhere. Invitiation to join the Wikimedia Research Team[edit]

Hello Elian!

I'd like to invite you to join the Wikimedia Research Team which I'm building here on Meta with support from the Foundation Board of Trustees. Our goal is to work together to systematically analyze the needs of the projects, conduct research and collect empirical data, interview users, build relationships with outside developers, examine project proposals, and make recommendations to the Board for targeted software development.

I'm contacting you because of your work on evaluating and entering feature requests and bug reports, which I think is one thing we can do more systematically, esp. the prioritization aspect. That doesn't necessarily mean any further time commitment on your part, but it would be nice to see you at meetings, and share ideas on the present and future of the project with you. We can't always agree on everything, but I still would greatly enjoy the opportunity to work with you on this because I do value your input. If you're interested, just add yourself to the list of Current Members, and I will inform you about all future developments.--Eloquence 16:20, 26 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cheatsheet - PNG[edit]

Dear Elian,

I'd like to ask you to upload a bigger-sized PNG image of the revised cheatsheet, in English and German please.

Why ? I use this as thumbnail on several of my pages (200px and 150px) and the thumbnail generation based on the current PNG is of bad quality (due to sampling artefacts i.e. moiré patterns). My experiments show, that this does not happen, if the downsizing is done based on a bigger sized PNG (e.g. width = 800 pixel).

Thanks in advance, danke --Wikinaut [mail] 20:26, 27 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Du hast dem Ripuarisch-Wiki widersprochen. RfWiNL[edit]

Moin Elisabeth, I saw your oppose votes on Requests for Wikis in new languages, your justification is a single word, "dialect". I think most of the people who closely following that page are curious as to the further motivations behind your vote. For example, why nessecarily shouldn't there be a Wikipedia in a dialect? Or, what of the famous quote "a shprakh iz a diyalekt mit an armey un a flot"? The line between language and dialect is often very unclear -- some people would consider Portuguese and Spanish to be dialects of the same language. Also, there is something some people have said, "if people are willing to work on it, why not let them?". I hope you will add more detail to your votes on that page. --Node ue 19:39, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

ppt uploads[edit]

Hello Elian,

Sorry if this is not the right place for this type of query, but I've searched numerous time for an article that explained how to enable upload of 'ppt'. 'doc', 'xls' and could not find anything. So I saw the ppt presentations on Meta and figured that there should be a way to do that.

I have recently set up my own wiki using MediaWiki and managed to upload images and PDFs, but would llike to expand the capabilities of my wiki. Can you help with some hints as to how I can go about enabling upload for these ffile formats?

Please send email to uk_claudc@yahoo.com.br. I'd very appreciative if you could do me this favour.

Thank you,

Cllaudio

I am not sure but ... WSIS was a symposium in the early this year? Translation there seems to be done, but remaining links seem to be helpful for other purposes. Currently I am re-organizing TR pages, and if no translation happen there, it would be better for us to rename this page and have it more visible, I suppose ...... perhaps you as promotion folk have better ideas about it than me, I expect ;) --Aphaia 04:10, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

trying - as far I can tell you, I can't use the same fonts as in the other cheatsheets, the rest should work. --Elian 20:17, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Color of proposed logos[edit]

Hello. I noticed your posts [2] [3] to the logo discussion pages. Using the Meta colors has become the standard for many logos, and many of the designs have been created with those colors in mind. Is there a specific guideline or policy you had in mind when making this comment?--HereToHelp (talk) 11:53, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When you look at our current logos, only one logo, the incubator logo, uses the wikimedia colors and this had some really negative reactions. It was accepted in this case because the Incubator is somehow not really a project on its own but very closely related to Wikimedia. The guideline I am refering here are the unwritten laws of logo design: the point about a logo is to have a picture that clearly and unmistakenly identifies one project. If you have four logos, looking all more or less the same, you destroy the strength of a logo. --Elian 13:19, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

here. please proofread thoroughly (check especially for any wrong ~os, my software had a little bit of trouble typesetting these). Hi! Thanks for your work. I have found some errors in my translation (see changes here: [4]; the first word "Mindenki" should be "Bárki", the "egy" after "fülre" should be "bármely", the intro thus should read: "Bárki szerkesztheti a Wikipédiát, a szabad enciklopédiát. Ez azért lehetséges mert a Wikipédia egy wiki: csak kattints a „szerkesztés” fülre bármely cikk tetején és kezdj el írni. Ez a súgókártya bemutatja az alapvető formázási trükköket."; note that there was a space missing in the pdf file between the second and third sentences;

I also changed the dashes before the signature: on Hungarian wiki we use an n-dash – instead of two hyphens; if you omit the hyphens its just as good.).

Regarding the letters, I guess you've noticed that the ő and ű doesn't look quite the same (in your version õ and u); I know you might not have in the typeface used (I don't know which one you use..., maybe we could work something out if I had the Central European edition of the same font), but the substitutes can't really pass for the originals. If you can't find them (look for Unicode codes at Wikipedia:ő) then its better to copy the acent from the top of the letter é or á placed two times next to each other, than to be without accents.

Thanks again for your work, I think you did a great job (you got most of the special letters right, and also the quotation marks, which is not that common even in Hungary...; also there we no errors in the actual text that you introduced). Best regards, --Dami 01:42, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, new version, now hopefully with the correct o's and u's ;-) didn't look close enough the first time. --Elian 02:49, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot, the letters are in order now :). I showed it to a couple of people, and they really liked it. They suggested some minor changes, I'll wait a bit for everyone to have a chance to pull it apart (before the PDF version, almost no one took the time to look at it, so I had no usable feedback). I'll let you know, the (hopefully) final changes in the text. Regards, --Dami 15:34, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

sweet :-) For placing it under the marketing section: the page is not protected AFAIK, so you can do it yourself. Some tips, if you want to improve the postcard: I'd reduce the line space between 'Source: Wikipedia" and "Visit.." a bit and give the text on the left half of the postcard a bit more borderspace (for example the same borderspace as the stamp). --Elian 19:52, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cheatsheet for Belarusian (taraškievica) Wikipedia[edit]

Hi, I have an idea to translate Cheatsheet Poster to Belarusian and make a print. I want a size of either 400x600mm or 600x900mm. So, what should I do first of all? Wizardist 00:52, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

--Redneck Girl 08:34, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Vorgehen[edit]

Falls DS hier keine leere Floskel, bitte etwas unternehmen. Baldigst! --Redneck Girl 11:20, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ich hab das an die Ombudsmann-Kommission weitergeleitet. Antwort kann aber etwas dauern. --Elian 12:55, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Besten Dank! --Redneck Girl 15:17, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

methodological question[edit]

Hallo, Elian! In favour of brevity, I shall abstain of drowning you in the whirlpool of facts and reasons, promising you to dive into this depth at your special request :). In short, my question to you as an ombudsman (that is, the last resort in interpreting Wikipedia’s regulations) sounds like this:

  • — what rules (if any) may authorize the Arbitres to conduct inspections of the sysop’s (admin’s) and check-users’ (CU) activities using the provocative methods?
For example, an arbiter creates a sockpuppet which a) behaves agressively; b) opposes the CU who is on his way of discovering this sock-puppeting; c) knowingly publishes false statements that he is not a puppet etc?
At the same, acting under his real nickname — again, in public, — the same arbiter is putting pressure upon other CU’s, asking them to, literally, "think twice" before starting checks of his (nobody knows that) puppet.
  • If, in that or another way these methods may have ethic and legal grounding in the Wikipedia’s rules, then:
    — should these provocative checks be conducted upon a special plan, which should be collectively approved by all the arbiters (Arb. Comm.) before launching "ducks"?
    — should AC clearly define the scope of methods which are supposed to be applicable against a specific suspect? Or is it it ethical/acceptable to leave the choice of tactics (e.g. to lie or not lie in the dialogues) at the discretion and impromptu of an arbiter temporarily disguised as a puppet?

Finally and perhaps, most important: are there any explicit guarantees for the CU’s which may provide their independence from the Arbiters, in particular, in their choice of the objects of their checks? Since appointment and dismissal of CU's is the prerogative of arbiters, one may encounter a classical legal lacoona, a gap, when a governing body is outside the legal impact while the counterbalancing system is missing?

Alternatively: if an arbiter trusts the checkusers’ he appointed — why doesn’t he warn privately his appointees (CU’s) — «listen, guys — I wanna play a duck, don't shoot — OK?» :)))

Thanking you in advance for your reply, I kindly ask everybody to consider all the above facts to be fictional, and possible similarities - unintentional, until this issue may be resolved in abstracto. Cherurbino 09:28, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

further development[edit]

Hallo, Elian! In addition to abovesaid — which is the right place to put a more official request upon the subject, i.e. with nicks, diffs etc.? In general, a question may sound like this:

  • Arbiter 'A' has an account which he claims to be an abbreviation of his real name
  • Checkuser 'C' founds that a sockpuppet 'S' = 'A'.
  • Arbiter 'A' insists, that 'C' has infringed his privacy by revealing that 'S' = 'A', where 'A' = actual personal name. (see diff here)

My opinion is, that there's no privacy breech on the side of checkusers, since it was 'A'’s original choice to set his nick = his actual name.

Thus, if 'A' has originally chosen an option to invent a nickname (instead of using a real one) — such effects would not come, because one unknown (nick 'S') would have been equated to another unknown (nick 'A').

Produce WMDOC/Cheatsheet in Malay language[edit]

Hi Elian! I'm a Wikipedian from Wikipedia Bahasa Melayu (ms.wikipedia.org). Can you put this Malay translation I made from m:WMDOC/Cheatsheet into the page? You will find it when you edit this text. Hope to hear news from you soon. Thanks! Izhamwong (talk) 13:21, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

An idea[edit]

Hello Elian! I had an idea and I want to tell you it, I was thinking about a Wikipedia in Galician-portuguese. What do you think about it? Thanks for your attention, --Gato Preto (talk) 10:34, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia cheatsheet in Spanish[edit]

Hi Elian. The version you produced is n Argentinian Spanish and it is too localized. I think it would be better to prepare one with Spanish language that is understood and accepted more widely. I have put a comment in the discussion about it. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cheatsheet-es.pdf. I can offer help if you wish. Wikipedia cheatsheet in Asturian[edit]

Hi Elian. An Asturian version of Wikipedia cheatsheet is ready at WMDOC/Cheatsheet/ast. It would be great to have it even if there is a Visual Editor now. One never knows when it might come in handy. Thank you. --Oriciu (talk) 21:01, 24 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
