[edit] bs.wiki

Hallo Erik. Wir haben vor kurzem auf der bs.wiki den Sichterstatus eingeführt. Komischerweise zeigt die Software aber keine Rufzeichen wie ich es von der de.wiki gewohnt bin.
The following groups have been added to bswiki:

'bswiki' => array(
'patroller' => array( 'patrol' => true ),
'autopatrolled' => array( 'autopatrol' => true ),
'rollbacker' => array( 'rollback' => true ),
),

Also, the Bureaucrats are the only ones able to assign or unassign these groups.
--Seha 15:06, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] HTML question

Good day to you. Myself (User:Kumioko from the English Wikipedia) and a couple of other editors (at least a couple that I know of) are attempting to do various things within wikipedia and I was informed that you were the one to pose an HTML question too. We would like to be able to build things that contain multiple input boxes, which is currently not possible. In my case I am in the beginning stages of creating an article creator that would allow users (particularly inexperienced ones) with creating article relating to military biographies. Another editor is attempting a similar task for diseases (he is the one I got the idea from). IN my case I would like to pose a series of questions such as What is the name of the person for the article they are creating, when they were born, where they were born etc so that after 10 to 15 questions they can create a basic article with the information of the individual. Please let me know what you think of the idea and if possible a way to accomplish it. --138.162.8.58 16:18, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] "Researcher" User Permissions on en.wiki

Hello Erik, I was curious about obtaining the "researcher" user permission on en.wiki in order to support my academic work. I contacted user DarTar, seemingly the only permission to obtain the permission, and he pointed me your way. My en.wiki user-page should be sufficient to show my good intentions. I have developed an anti-vandalism tool for Wikipedia and have academic publications on the topic (including one upcoming at WikiSym). Thanks, -AW, 98.225.152.76 13:16, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Hello there,
it's a bit silly for WMF to be a bottleneck for these requests, so I've started a discussion about developing a community process for granting this set of permissions, at w:Wikipedia talk:Research. I'd prefer to put your request on hold until we've figured this out, and use you as a guinea pig - sorry for the inconvenience.--Eloquence 02:27, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Reports, here and on wmf:

Hello Erik, thanks for your comments. I agree that duplication isn't useful, and simply want more and more detailed summaries and visualizations of what we are up to. By that I mean what all Wikimedians are doing, not just the Foundation. So I find it productive to put energy into consolidating that information; among other things it puts the Foundation's work in perspective and keeps it from becoming isolated. If we were only to publish WMF reports in a single language on a locked website, that might lead to chapters to doing the same, which wouldn't make for a very connected wikiverse.

You are right that we need more translation of important reports. I will see what I can do to get the Gardner Report and the similarly regular and extensive WM:DE reports translated for a start. SJ · talk | translate 03:55, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit] PD-Art Template

Hi Erik, Would you be so kind as to look over my comments at Commons:Template_talk:PD-Art#Correction_of_false_statement_on_this_template to see if I have my facts and assumptions correct. It relates to a contribution you made to the PD-Art debate on Commons and as this template is linked to a huge number of files I believe it is particularly important that the text is scrupulously accurate. 9carney 21:30, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Input Box Height

Dear Erik, About Input Box Height I really want to change the height of inputbox,I only know to change the width, can you help me?Can you send it to my email.I am from China,my hotmail is jackerda@hotmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.75.29.150 (talkcontribs) 05:27, 9 December 2010

I came here to ask the same thing, really - if it is possible to use an inputbox (to search, or whatever) with a different size or font - I discovered that HTML allows it by changing font, e.g. <INPUT TYPE="TEXT" STYLE="width:400; height:150; font-size: 5em">, however it does not appear to be possible to pass such information through mw:Extension:InputBox, as far as I can tell? [edit] Proposals for more female editors

Aren't you in a conflict of interest when you remove proposals which, if approved, would be more work for you? Can we agree to keep all the proposals visible with specific rationales for and against? I realized after we spoke that in response to the California Chapter grant proposal you stated that you lacked confidence in my ability, which is specifically in contradiction with your statement that you are confident that I can accomplish the necessary work. Whichever end of that spectrum is true, I am certain that Yaron Koren is the more efficient and experienced choice to upgrade the Quiz Extension to GIFT. James Salsman 21:04, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

James, having read your proposals that were removed, they all seem either unrelated to being welcoming to female editors, or easily misinterpreted as being offensive along gender lines. Please don't assume conflict of interest! The talk page seems to be a better place for discussion of those and other controversial proposals. SJ · talk | translate 21:38, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
SJ, it is one thing to say that they seem unrelated, but specific rationales have been stated and linked to for all of them, both on the Gendergap list and/or the talk page. So far, there has been no discussion addressing those reasons. When Erik deleted the proposals he didn't like, he did so with a vague edit summary without any specific reasons, and referring to a talk page discussion which didn't even mention some of the items he deleted, and which objected most strongly to some of the items which he did not delete. I intend to restore all of them in a tabular format so we can keep track of the rationales both for and against each. Which proposal(s) are you saying can be misinterpreted as being offensive? James Salsman 22:15, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm not discounting the value of your intellectual approach, James. You have an unusual mind which may surface sides of a problem most people are unlikely to see. At the same time, you also tend to jump to conclusions with a high degree of confidence and specificity. I don't think the highly specific items that you added to the list are helpful to others who are trying to address the issue of female participation -- they will be seen as confusing, unrelated, and will lead to people discounting the page as pointless (as Ironholds did). If you wish for that to continue, by all means add them back -- the result will be that it will become James Salsman's page, and people will ignore it. On the other hand, if you want to influence people's perspective, I suggest taking a more step-by-step approach, and focusing on the discussion page on larger themes such as the relationship between gender, income, and access to technology, and implications this may have for growth especially in developing countries, without prescribing highly specific solutions.--Eloquence 01:27, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
Why do you say that ideas associated with my name will be ignored? Fred B. spent a lot of effort trying to attribute all of the ideas -- including others' -- to me too,[2][3] and I would really like to understand the dynamic here, or avoid it altogether and go back to (my substantially more successful, so far) practice of editing meta as an IP. I agree there needs to be a better way to clearly explain how all of the proposals relate to support for women, but I have explained these things in detail before. It's interesting to me that Ironholds brought up the restrictions on UK charities' political activity because helping the UK chapter to attain charitable status is one of the main reasons I proposed low stakes assessment content questions a year and a half ago.[4] In accordance with Carol's wishes to brainstorm first and cull the wheat from the chaff later I do intend to restore visibility of all the proposals. With luck I will do a better job summarizing the rationales instead of just linking to explanations elsewhere. James Salsman 04:47, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
  • To poke my head in, the problems WMUK is having with charitable status are actually unrelated to any political activities. Engaging in political activities would, however, rather shut the door to some degree :P. Ironholds 10:56, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Spanish edition

Hi, Erik. I´ve been expelled from the Spanish edition unfairly. Many of my articles have been deleted because of alleged plagiarism, which is false and it can be proved. I started collaborating with wikipedia several years ago, and at the beginning I didn´t know the rules very well. Unwittingly, I made some mistakes with references and I was correcting them when Ecemaml (the administrator´s name) expelled me. There are many complaints about this administrator, even a blog about him, but nobody does anything. In general, thousands of good/correct articles are deleted. Others, are admitted in different editions (English, French, etc) and deleted from the Spanish one, alleging "lack of relevance". The rest of administrators obey Ecemaml´s commands and they don´t say a word. I think that wikipedia´s spirit should be inclusive. Could you please intervene? Thank you. --81.9.232.137 16:06, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

[edit] The Wikipedia Game

A discussion about improving Wikipedia's help documentation inspired an idea--tutorials would be best if they were interactive and immersive. The thought of a learning-teaching game came up, one based on a real interface with realistic 'missions'. Would you be interested in providing some feedback or helping work on it, or know some editors who might? The idea is just getting started and any assistance with the help/policy side, the experienced-editor side, or the coding/game-making side would be great. Cheers, Ocaasi 04:05, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi Eric,

This is rather trivial, but since the announcement gave some light to the Wikilove page on the prototype site, there is an IP who in the past few days has been trying (three times so far) to insert an unrelated russian link to the demo page. You may want to consider semi-protecting, at least for a bit.

[edit] Translator, We need you!

Dear Eloquence,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

If you would be interested please take a look at this little sign-up survey and fill it out http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=13638&newtest=Y&lang=en. With that we can start building a list of people and filling any gaps in the languages we serve.

Many Thanks

[edit] Is it allowed in Wikipedia?

To keep in the pages of wiki Administrator's personnel thesis? at http://sd.wikipedia.org ? Other problem is We call Computer as same in English, but admin forcibly used his word Ganpukar of Computer. I have proof that thousands of published books called it Computer not Ganpukar. If some one oppose him he started abusive language. That is the reason sd.wikipedia.org never got attraction to Sindhi community. Plz check record there. Other things are he locked CSS due to that on the same site there are lot of font styles appeared there. He is not able to set commonCSS or Monocss. We are in trouble to work in our local Sindhi language. I don't know where to say for this problem. Record history says all the situation there. [edit] Support wanted to solidify graphic initiatives and SVG innovation

(erik at wikimedia dog org not responding )

Dear Erik,

I've been for 6 years the architect-coordinator and a leading graphist & mapmaker of the +6 Graphic Labs and about one hundred graphists, who edited or created more than 12.000 images including +5.000 maps for wikipedia over the last 6 years. I'm now returning to active involvement, coordination, and R&D monitoring for images edition on wikipedia. My interest for graphics start with the following fact: articles are made of both textual and graphic contents. But I'm quite stuck to see there is no graphic team pushing for graphic innovation neither at the WM level, nor at the strategic wiki level. On the other hand, there are some tremendous visions and opportunities open to us on the graphic, SVG and mapmaking sides. The capabilities of SVG are underused, a web 2.0 online collaborative GIS mapmaking is need and proposed (see : http://Sharemap.org : the webmaster create it for Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons), images on commons should not be duplicated for translations but multi-linguistic layers should be used with online translation, thus easing our work on commons and enlarging WM's reach, etc.

These directions and others are several heavy projects specific to the graphic edition side that I overviewed and coordinated for this last 6 years. Also, I gathered a team of skilled programmers and graphists. Briana Laugher and Philippe Beaudete advised me to contact you for supports. I'm indeed interested to know... To push SVG, maps & graphic innovation :

  • can the wikimedia foundation actively support and solidify these projects ? so we can ACT NOW.
    • how ?
    • a call to developpers to support the initiative (effective ?)
    • some founding.
  • the OSM-Wikipedia collaboration got 15.000US$
    • Are the 20.000US$ of the Greenspun project explicitly donated to improve SVG still available
    • and who should I contact to find solid supports/funding to push these innovations ?

We are looking for contacts, scholarship, programmers to solidly support these projects.

Hoping your support for this graphic side of wikipedia, Regards,

[edit] IPv6 rumors

Hello, there seems to be some rumors and unclear statements around that Wikimedia intends to implement IPv6 either temporarily or permanently for the World IPv6 launch thingy on June 6. I would appreciate if you clarify that indeed it's not getting implemented on production wikis. While the switch is unavoidable in the long run, doing it without proper announcements with a loooot of time to prepare for it, by fixing the hundreds of scripts, bots, tools that would be broken by the IPv6 implementation and properly explaining to admins across all wikis how to do IPv6 blocks and rangeblocks. I assume that indeed, we're not doing anything on the production servers this June, but it would be great to have this confirmed and the rumors quashed. Snowolf How can I help? 02:12, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Regardless of the answer, mw:Roadmap#MediaWiki_Core needs clarification.--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:28, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi there,
we're using IPv6 Day as a motivation to get us closer to full production deployment, but it's not a "come hell or high water" permanent deployment date. We're planning to do some limited production testing at the Berlin Hackathon and on IPv6 Day, but we'll only keep it enabled if the issues are manageable. Please note known critical issues that we can help with in Bugzilla, as blockers for bugzilla:35540. I'll share some more detailed notes in the next couple of days once the team has had a chance to weigh in. --Eloquence (talk) 00:46, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
