Welcome to Meta![edit]

Hello Emaus, and welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). If you would like, feel free to ask me questions on my talk page. Happy editing! Mercy 21:27, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

With kind regards, --Mercy 21:27, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

re: Idea for SulUtil[edit]

Hi Emaus. I noticed your suggestion for SulUtil to list the global groups that apply to each wiki. If you're still interested, this is now an optional feature of the similar Stalktoy tool (see example). —Pathoschild 19:13, 01 July 2012 (UTC)

Fundraising translation feedback[edit]

Hey Emaus,

I wanted to ask for your help. As you may be aware we have been running banners on many language wikis. We have a lot of new content this year and I really want to conduct a thorough review of our translations. This is a combination of feedback from the community, readers, donors as well as those with professional translator experience. This will help us ensure the highest quality of translations used in our messaging.

To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us feedback for Russian using This Link

Simply follow the simple instructions on that page and if you have any questions feel free to contact me on my talk page.

Many Thanks

Problems with your bot[edit]

May you have your bot "EmausBot" Update List of Wikipedias/Table and other pages every 24 hours at 00:00:00 UTC instead of 02:00:00 UTC. 24.218.110.195 13:06, 18 May 2013 (UTC) 9:06AM EDT 5/18/2013 .[reply]

How about 0:05 UTC?
By the way, there are some messages on your bot’s German talk page. --Geitost diskusjon 15:46, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hello there again! How about 00:05 UTC? Each wikimedia foundation project is updated at a different hour. The wikipedia one updates a couple of seconds after 00:00 UTC (approx 40-55 seconds after). This is about 7PM/8PM Daylight time on my clock. Also posted on your ru.wiki talk page. 24.218.110.195 01:52, 24 July 2013 (UTC) 9:52PM EDT 7/23/2013.[reply]
Hello. I setted the updation time twice per day: at 00:00 (UTC) and 12:00 (UTC). It is possible, since I qrote my own updation code.--Emaus (talk) 14:23, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Could your bot also update the newly created Wikivoyage/Table? Use the 0:00/12:00 UTC times for updating. 24.218.110.195 18:50, 16 August 2013 (UTC) 2:50pm EDT 8/16/2013.[reply]
Done. --Emaus (talk) 11:56, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also your bot keeps on writing "good" instead of "articles" on most of the tables it updates. This needs to be fixed. 24.218.110.195 00:47, 18 August 2013 (UTC) 8:47pm EDT 8/17/2013.[reply]
The "good" denotes content pages in all other projects, for example, see Wiktionary/Table. Are you sure that the content pages of Wikivoyage can be called "article"? --Emaus (talk) 10:12, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can also call it content pages as seen on the statistic pages of different Wikimedia projects. Why hadn't your bot updated the stats for August 29? All the stats are still at 12:00 8/28. Did the bot break down or something? 24.218.110.195 19:00, 29 August 2013 (UTC) 3:00pm EDT 8/29/2013.[reply]
Your bot is updating at 1:00 and 13:00 UTC. Fix it back. I think that its the clocks turning back/forward. If this is true your gonna have to adjust your bot for time changes 107.3.117.228 (talk) 20:45 10 November 2013 (UTC) 3:45pm 11/10/2013 EST.

Maṣri without a final ī with macron[edit]

Hi. Would you please stop your bot from reverting my correction to the Egyptian Arabic name transliteration over and over again? The correct transliteration is with a normal i, not with the one you write with a macron. The reason is explained there. Thanks. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 19:45, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

List of Wikipedias problem 2[edit]

Hi Emaus, your bot has deleted several Wikipedias from the list. Regards, --Holder (talk) 05:13, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted the edit for the time being. --Vssun (talk) 05:19, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! They were not deleted and you can find them in the bottom of the list on that revision. And this can be caused by inaccessibility of local statistics pages at the moment. --Emaus (talk) 20:24, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

German Wikipedia has 0 articles as of 00:00 August 17???[edit]

For the edit of 00:00 August 17, the German Wikipedia showed 0 articles. Could you consider modifying the code so if an active Wikipedia suddenly drops to "0" you do something special, like show the previous-edit's statistics or at least note that the "0" is likely bogus? Numbers format in Wiktionary/Table[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for your bot! Do you think you could use {{formatnum:}} to display the numbers in the pages Wiktionary/Table (and probably the others) ? That way big numbers would be much more readable (e.g. 1,000,000 instead of 1000000 in English). Darkdadaah (talk) 15:46, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. My bot copies this data from wikistats.wmflabs.org and there are numbers without the delimeters. --Emaus (talk) 10:04, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Depth on List of Wikipedias/Table[edit]

Why the depth of wiki "mk, bn, zh-classical and as" is absent (--)?

 • Hello! The depth of these projects is overvalued due to the huge number of redirections or any other way, see the total number of pages. And that's why there are excluded from calculation for a long time. See also some discussions here and here. --Emaus (talk) 10:50, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unlisted wikis[edit]

Would you mind adding the following wikis to the statistics pages when your bot runs?

 • Hello! Unlike the lists of Wikipedias and Wikivoyages, in case of Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource and Wikiversity my bot just copies data from [2] and there are no data for these projects. I can set my bot to get the data from the wiki projects directly but this requires a bit of work. --Emaus (talk) 17:42, 18 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Do you know who maintains that tool these days? Mutante doesn't seem to anymore. (Thanks for maintaining all those pages anyhow; they make updating the portals so much easier.) – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 08:38, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for EmausBot[edit]

I just wanted to thank you for writing and running EmausBot, which made Module:Project portal possible. Source code[edit]

Hello. Do you release source code of your bot freely? Can I access to a copy of it? --Zerabat (discusión) 22:51, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gothic native language name[edit]

Please fix your code, your updates are placing random garbge for native language name of Gothic. This should be:

[{{fullurl:got:𐌲𐌿𐍄𐌹𐍃𐌺}} 𐌲𐌿𐍄𐌹𐍃𐌺]

and should read as:

𐌲𐌿𐍄𐌹𐍃𐌺
(That text is easy to read with the "Pfeffer Mediæval" free font installed in your system, and a decent browser like Chrome). In UTF-16 it is encoded as 6 pairs of surrogates as <D800,DF32>, <D800,DF3F>, <D800,DF44>, <D800,DF39>, <D800,DF43>, <D800,DF3A> (all the 6 characters are outside the BMP).

whose direct transliteration to Latin is simple to read as "GOTISK", and not the completley broken string containing a completely random collection of combining characters (not even in the Gothic script) verdy_p (talk) 06:54, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Note: even in wikistats.wmflabs.org (if you read your data from there), it reads correctly. Visibly your bot does not parse correctly the characters outside the BMP.
And probably you should use "#language:" in the posted code, it is also correct with:
[{{fullurl:got:𐌲𐌿𐍄𐌹𐍃𐌺}} {{#language:got}}]
which also reads correctly as;
𐌲𐌿𐍄𐌹𐍃𐌺
Thanks. verdy_p (talk) 07:08, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Don't ignore my message, your bot still continues to insert random text in List of Wikipedias/Table. Must I ask an admin to block your bot ?
You are inserting (here shown using Unicode UTF-16 string escapes like in Javascript, not directly the Wiki syntax based on a direct UTF-8 encoding):
[{{fullurl:got:̶̲̰̰̳̰̿̈́͂}} ̲̹̺̿̈́̓]
instead of the correct:
[{{fullurl:got:𐌲𐌿𐍄𐌹𐍃𐌺}} 𐌲𐌿𐍄𐌹𐍃𐌺]
This is complete nonsense; even the target of the generated URL goes nowhere.
That random text looks like an attempt to attack text renderers in browsers used by visitors by using overlong and non-sense sequences of combining characeters, or to break into the MediaWiki text parser.
This random text has absolutely nothing in common with the name of the language. This is PURE RANDOM selection of characters intended only to hurt.
This cannot be tolerated. Stop SPAMMING this text again and again. I ORDER YOU TO FIX YOUR BOT NOW ! verdy_p (talk) 08:47, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Issue closed. But anyway I suggest you to check again the list of displayed language names and the list of target pages in each wiki project (detect redirects, replace them appropriately).
Ideally you should not even post the language names directly, but you should use {{#language|code|en}} for the English version, and {{#language|code}} for the autonym.
For the target pagename to a localized wiki, you don't even need any translation of "Main Page", use only the language code prefix, (which drives to Wikipedia in that language) followed by the prefix of the project (the ink will be resolved in that local language). Note that "Main Page" is often (but not always) a redirect in a localized wiki (frequently that legacy name has been deleted). Let the target wiki use its own default page.
All this will simplify the maintenance and will avoid further problems like above, and you'll only have to manage new wikis appearing.
Note that your Bot still displays some differences in autonyms, because the prefered names have been changed (the prefered name is the one configured in MediaWiki and accessible with #language, use it!). verdy_p (talk) 20:07, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Three other things to consider:
* that page will be typically used by users around the world. And for all statistic integers you should avoid using commas as group separators (and not even the dot), use only a space and the table will be precessible by everyone (oncluding in Excel) without producing false results when the comma is the decimal separator. Excel (or other spreadsheets) will process integers with spaces in all languages without errors of interpretation.
 • avoid forcing the left/right alignment on autonyms. The autonyms should be aligned using their default alignement according to their script. You should only right-align numeric columns (however you have forced the alignment at the table level, what will be needed is to set the alignment at cell level, because MediaWiki still does not support the "col" HTML element in the table header. to define common styles to all cells in a column).
 • for cells in the English language name column there should be attributes lang="en", dir="ltr"; for the autonym cells, this should be lang="code" with the appropriate direction of that language (you can use {{dir}} here on Meta-Wiki to return you the correct value "rtl" or "ltr").
 • ideally the table headers (including the subsection heading line above it) and footers, should come from a transcluded template (I will manage to make it autotranslatable, this is a bit tricky to do correctly), or by using {{TCT}} taking the translatable strings from a "/Content" subpage which will be translated. And in fact, instead of generating each table row, you could use a single template code with the necessary data (only the rank n the first column, the language code, and statistics), that template will format the language names, numbers, and will properly align columns automatically. You bot will then only post a short list of template inclusions. and that /Table page with tables will be then correctly translated on translated pages transcluding it. I could provide you a sandboxed version showing how the /Table should look like. verdy_p (talk) 20:25, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed changes for List of Wikipedias/Table[edit]

Hello Emaus I wanted to request some changes to the List of Wikipedias/Table I think the following five English exonyms should be changed

 • Buryat (Russia) → Buryat: Russia in parentheses is unnessisary.
 • Western Panjabi → Western Punjabi: According to the Lahnda language article it is refered to as Western Punjabi not Panjabi
 • Quechua → Southern Quechua: there are many Quechuan languages, but that particular project only uses the Southern Quechua language, while the other Quechuan languages are in Incubator.
 • Franco-Provençal/Arpitan → Franco-Provençal: Per wikipedia article name.
 • Newar / Nepal Bhasa → Newari: Also per article name, and to avoid confusion with Nepali.

Something's wrong. Wiktionary/Table, Wikibooks/Table, Wikiquote/Table, Wikinews/Table, and Wikiversity/Table haven't been edited by your bot since June 17th, and the last edit to each page was just changing the timestamps and nothing else. In Wikisource/Table, only the multilingual hub (www.wikisource.org) is getting its stats updated (only timestamps being changed for the other Wikisources in the table since June 16th). --Emaus (talk) 23:04, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There has been another update since then, at 12:00, 3 December 2018, which was well before you left your comment above. You can edit that part of the page yourself (just edit the entire page — it's not very big). Only the List of Wikipedias/Table subpage (which is transcluded into List of Wikipedias) is maintained by the bot. - dcljr (talk) 16:54, 25 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

EmausBot at de-Wikibooks[edit]

Hi, last night you started to correct double redirects. Thank you for your help.

One correction failed: Sensorisches_System/Fisch That's not your mistake but mine: At 12:59, 16. Jul. 2018, I moved the target page b:de:Sensorische Systeme/Fische to b:de:Sensorische System/ Fische (adding a blank behind the slash) without creating a redirect. Therefore the bot's work leads to a not-existing page.

If possible, the bot should not lead to a non-existing page. Please, compare b:de:Spezial:Defekte_Weiterleitungen that means Special:BrokenRedirects. In these cases, it would be better to check the redirects manually rather than by bot.

Good luck further on, Juetho (talk) 09:17, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Timing of stats table updates[edit]

I'd like to request that all 8 stats tables for the main WM content projects be updated at (around) 00:00 UTC each day. Currently only the Wikipedia and Wikivoyage tables are updated at that time (WP twice a day). As you know (listing them here for the record), Wiktionary is updated at 02:00, Wikisource at 03:00, Wikinews at 04:00, Wikibooks at 05:00, Wikiquote at 06:00, and Wikiversity at 11:00.) The later update times make it difficult to tell sometimes whether a particular milestone occurred on one day or another (i.e., before or after 00:00 UTC) for the purpose of milestone announcements at Wikimedia News. Would this change require a Phabricator task? - dcljr (talk) 06:18, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Emaus: Can I get a reply about this? - dcljr (talk) 23:14, 9 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
 • Hello! Sorry for delay. Currently my bot collects for WP and WVOY on its own and gets data from wikistats for other tables. I can customize it to collect all data on its own. --Emaus (talk) 20:58, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Just wanted to say thanks for doing this. - dcljr (talk) 00:42, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Shan Wikipedia on List of Wikipedias/Table[edit]

Hi Emaus, for Shan Wikipedia Language and Language (local) are both swapped in each others places. --Antonio1952 (talk) 22:31, 9 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

dewiki link on List of Wikipedias/Table[edit]

Would you be able to update the German language link on List of Wikipedias/Table from this:

| 4
| [[w:German language|German]]
| class="plainlinksneverexpand" | [{{fullurl:de:Deutsch}} Deutsch]

to this:

| 4
| [[w:German language|German]]
| class="plainlinksneverexpand" | [{{fullurl:de:Deutsche Sprache}} Deutsch]

Thank you. Nihlus 20:20, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Emaus, the bot did not update the "List of Wikipedias/Table" since 7 May.--جار الله (talk) 15:37, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important: Bot giving wrong numbers[edit]

Hey Emaus,

Thank you for your work! The bot needs an important update. It counts User:Abuse filter as an admin still, but that is not a real user. Could you please set the bot to subtract 1 from the total? –MJLTalk 00:49, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wiktionary-Table-Error[edit]

Could you please look here? Thx --Şêr (talk) 16:13, 7 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Same error for Wiktionary, Wikibooks, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikinews and Wikiversity. I've reverted the latest updates of these back to the last good version. The tables for Wikipedia and Wikivoyage are fine (as explained above, these two are based on stats collected by the bot itself, whereas the other tables rely on Wikistats). - dcljr (talk) 00:22, 8 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

List of Wikipedias-Vitnamese[edit]

There is no depth for Vitnamese Wikipedia in the table, there is just two dashes (--). Despite it's not too big or too small to not be writen. In fact, by doing the depth calculation, the Vitnamese Wikipedia depth well be 489 (488.5602767…).--SADIQUI (Talk) 20:39, 17 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Depth calculation[edit]

Hello, I would like to calculate the depth in a similar way to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_article_depth but add another dimension - articles. So the output should be language, article , article disussion, number of edits.

Do you know if there is an easy way to produce such a table? --Yoavd (talk) 10:34, 24 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

14 Wiktionaries dropped from table[edit]

Did you notice this? I reverted it. - dcljr (talk) 00:48, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

See also this and this. Temporary gliches or is something deeper going on? - dcljr (talk) 01:01, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Seems to have been a temporary glich. Tables are back to normal. - dcljr (talk) 02:24, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Slovak Kazakh[edit]

Not Slovak Kazakh That is Kazakh Slovak That's an error. but i don't know how to fix it. Kazakh is greater than Slovak. Slovak is less than Kazakh. This order of languages is wrong. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 108.31.4.71 (talk) 16:29, 30 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinews table[edit]

Hi. I reverted Special:Diff/20143854 because it broke the module's ability to process that table - was that bot edit correct? --DannyS712 (talk) 01:50, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the same problem as in #14 Wiktionaries dropped from table. It would be great if the bot could do more error checking to detect things like this. - dcljr (talk) 02:56, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Map of popular Wikipedia edition by country[edit]

Добрый день Emaus,

I've already asked this question on the Reference desk of the English Wikipedia and I posted a feature request on Phabricator but because you seem interested in stats and more knowledgeable than I am on this subject I thought you may be able to help:

I'd like to update maps such as this one as they're all old and the situation may have changed since: 7 years is a lot! For instance the Armenian and Azeri Wikipedia are now number one in their respective countries and I noticed similar changes between French and Arabic in some countries.

Do you know if there's a simple way to get this data? Maybe something on Toolforge?

Thanks for any help you can provide, A455bcd9 (talk) 08:48, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can you tweak your bot to have "Active users" instead of "Active Users", in the more traditional wiki-style? Rich Farmbrough 20:23 16 August 2020 (GMT).

Also "Grand total" rather than "Grand Total". Rich Farmbrough 07:43 17 August 2020 (GMT).

Hi! Do you know why the bot does not calculate the depth for Vietnamese Wikipedia? By my calculation it is about 677. MSGJ (talk) 21:07, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's the time to add ja.wikivoyage on it? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 14:10, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

List of Wikipedias/Table (4)[edit]

Hey! I've found an error in the table... in Ligurian language, "Ligurian" is "lìgure" or "zenéize", not "lìguru"! Can you fix it? Thanks. --C. crispus (talk) 19:23, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
