[edit] Category member lists

If I want a similar lists of people who are in other categories but not Living people, can I do it myself? Or do I have to get someone else to do it for me? I couldn't find the tool you used :( . Cheers! Jarry1250 16:39, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

I generated the list using a query. I'm not sure if there's actually a tool you can use. I'd expected Cat Scan to offer the possibility, but it appears it doesn't. If you want I can get you other lists as well though. You'll just need to tell me what categories you want to use. You could also ask w:de:User:Duesentrieb to modify Cat Scan to be able to find articles in category A and not in category B. --Erwin(85) 16:56, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
I just realised a flaw in my bot meant I missed about 75 articles that needed changing. Would you remind running exactly the same query as before to see which they are? Duesentrieb's sort of working on improving CatScan but it'll take a while, you see. Anyhow, if you could message me on wikipedia to remind me, that would also be great. Cheers, Jarry1250 19:19, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Many thanks. Jarry1250 20:32, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] your tool categorycount vs. variable PAGESINCATEGORY ...

... wins!! ;)))

how do you manage to find out the real sum of content of de:Kategorie:Wird_im_Mentorenprogramm_betreut, which has a wrong articlesumcount since several days ago? your tool doesn't have that problem and counts right! as i read in Bugzilla:16614 and elsewhere, this seems to be a severe bug. possibly you have the right hints for them? regards, --ulli purwin 12:31, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure if this is related to that bug. There's a difference of one in the counts, so I think that has to do with caching. As far as I know Wikipedia shows results from cache and doesn't update them for each pageview. --Erwin(85) 20:14, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
...no - its no caching-problem. your tool is always right - the pagesincategory change several times a day - and your tool shows always the right sum, which it couldn't do then... always one less then the variable, which is one too much! the problem is, that there had been a redirect on one of those users, which happened in between. thus this user is counted twice - but your tool is not disturbed by that ;) ! greetings, --ulli purwin 21:07, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
That's odd. To be honest I don't know how MediaWiki determines the value for pagesincategory, but apparently it uses a different method. Regards, Erwin(85) 21:18, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Tool Server Bug Reports

[edit] delete - wrong page count

http://toolserver.org/~erwin85/delete.php shows 380 pages to be deleted for the ksh.wikipedia.org while the wiki itself http://ksh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saachjrupp:Wikipedia:Schmie%C3%9F_Fott%21 only knows 38 such pages at the moment. The tool still lists pages that were deleted months ago, and also lists talk pages not to bel deleted at all. Often talk pages are kept as a documentation of the deletion process, or in cases of moved or renamed categories, so as to provide a link to the new category replacing it. --Purodha Blissenbach 02:22, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

The toolserver usually replicates data from Wikimedia, however at the moment it uses an old copy for a large number of projects. That's why it's outdated. Thanks for mentioning it though. --Erwin(85) 06:00, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] delete - wrong link

The "Bug report" Link on http://toolserver.org/~erwin85/delete.php goes to http://infra.ts.wikimedia.org/jira/browse/ERWIN which yields:

Not Found
The requested object does not exist on this server. The link you followed is either outdated, inaccurate, or the server has been instructed not to let you have it. Please inform the site administrator of the referring page.

--Purodha Blissenbach 02:22, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll fix that as soon as possible. --Erwin(85) 06:00, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Categorycount

Yes, it's me again :) I'm currently proposing a bot that relies on category counting, and I could with a bit of advice about the best way of doing so. I could, I think, use an intermediary tool (such as your own categorycount), which would be simple and reliable, but might be unnecessary. The api itself seems quite good, but I don't think it includes subcategories (which I would need). Any thoughts? Once again, it would be best if you could reply on my en wikipedia page. Thanks! Jarry1250 12:08, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Yes, that might be a good idea, particularly as I can't find a good way to get a quick count of the number of transclusions of a template... unless you know of a good way? 92.18.220.214 10:00, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Can't you use the api for that? (Though I again suggest using the toolserver.) --Erwin(85) 10:21, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
The tool now seems broken, but that may just be me. Is it? Jarry1250 19:40, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
You're right. A new server was recently installed to the toolserver cluster, so the bot didn't work a couple of times. It should work now though. Please let me know if it doesn't. --Erwin(85) 21:15, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
It appears that everything is now working perfectly. Thanks for fixing it so quickly. Jarry1250 10:25, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Admin-aanvraag

N.B. wil je Requests for adminship/EdBever verwijderen? Dat was een foutje bij het afkijken.... EdBever 11:49, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] www.rothenburg-tourist.de/it/index.htm

--79.208.125.222 14:45, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I removed the link because it has been spammed in the past from an IP address similar to yours. Besides that I don't think the link's relevant. Wikipedia is not a link farm. If you disagree, I suggest leaving a message at w:it:Talk:Rothenburg ob der Tauber. If a long-time contributor decides to add the link, I'll have no problems with it. --Erwin(85) 14:52, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
--79.208.125.222 16:34, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Well, unless you speak Italian I don't think there's anything you can do. I'm sorry I can't help you any further. --Erwin(85) 20:45, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I already linked the www.rothenburg-tourist.de for some month ago in the German and English version of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Wikipedia. So, the long-time contributor check them all, because the informations in www.rothenburg-tourist.de are relevant. Now, the Italian Version is just a translation of it. Also I put further informations all of them Versions in Wikipedia, cause I am an "expert" about the city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Lot of italians come to Rothenburg in the reality. Please help to give them more Informations, because they want to. Wikipedia have to build bridge´s over the languages "border". I hope you understand want I am telling you. My User Name is Kobiwankinobi --79.208.123.40 23:27, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
If i may interrupt; I find your website, although it is attractive, not of interest for wikipedia. Rothenburg.de is already linked since it is the official website. Special tourism-related sites are generally not wanted on wikipedia since they mainly focus on generating business. Things like the history of the town should be in the wikipedia-article (as you did in the en: version), the article should not rely on the external links to make the user find the info. [edit] SBhandler

EdBever 12:35, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
In Firefox werkt closed nu helemaal goed. EdBever 12:43, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
Add werkt ook succesvol. EdBever 15:07, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
--Erwin(85) 14:08, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Ja, zo gaat het goed. EdBever 14:49, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

I can not open the link : irc://irc.freenode.net/wikimedia-admin ... Is it the right link ? Or my internet explorer is bugging ?? Jagwar 19:13, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi, it is indeed the right link. You can try just connecting to irc.freenode.net using an IRC client and then joining #wikimedia-admin (/server irc.freenode.net and then /join #wikimedia-admin). If you don't have an IRC client you can also use a web based one, e.g. java.freenode.net. --Erwin(85) 19:22, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Lak wikipedia

Toch de andere drie (lbe:Aнжи, lbe:ЦIовкра-2 en lbe:Служебная:Технические вопросы) waren waarschijnlijk goede artikelen door hem gevandaliseerd.

Groeten--Yaroslav Blanter 16:10, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] quran.waraqat.net -- per m:User:COIBot/XWiki/quran.waraqat.net.

Hey Erwin. Waht´s wrong with this link? It´s a link to online Qur´an writen in arabic. The User Abokhalel2 (global) has put it on related sites. Perhaps wrong Bot report? --Seha 22:13, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, that's exactly the problem. The link was being added to a lot of projects. Projects where people won't speak Arabic and the link thus isn't relevant. It doesn't have to be the site itself that's the problem. In most cases it's the link placement. --Erwin 07:32, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
There is no other Qur´an but arabic written. The translations are in Islam not accepted. For those who are interessted on Islam, or are islamic, it is a nice source. I can´t see any problematic with this link, but OK. I´m gonna make an revert of your edits by this link on bs.wiki, if you don´t mind. There is no reason to see it as vandalism or spam. It´s a edit based on true will, but perhaps maded at wrong places. Best regards --Seha 07:32, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] xwiki.php

Could you tweak 2 things? In

Vanessa Marcil (L) (hist | edit | rem ) (Reported edits: diff;)

the spacing is odd -- hist doesn't have a space before it but rem has one after it - could you add that missing space?

And instead of adding (L) to the article title, could we use colours? Probably green for unlinked and red for linked would be straightforward for folks.

[edit] Meta admins and discussions

Hi there. There has been mention of a meta blacklisting and admin actions (from January 2009) at a current request for arbitration over on en-Wikipedia. The request is titled "Abd and JzG". I've asked there whether I've found the right links to the meta discussions and actions mentioned at the request. If I have the right person (I think you made the edit to the blacklist to add the website in question), then this is a courtesy notification so that you are aware of this. There was also an earlier RfC, but I don't know if you were aware of that. If you could help fill out some of the background to this, either at the request or when the case opens, that would be great. Thanks. I've left a duplicate of this note at your en-Wikipedia user talk page. Carcharoth 20:16, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Idea for Tool "contribs"

To identify faster two propably different biological users: Consecutively edits from two different users under 60 sec with time-Background in yellow, under 30 sec with time-background in orange, under 10 sec with time-background in red (quite shure not the same user or it is made deliberately, but then it has mostly a similar pattern) --Fg68at 15:14, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

I definitely want to implement this. It has actually been suggested before, but I haven't found the time yet to make the required changes. --Erwin 20:16, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh, and i observed now, that i can view only maximal the first and the last 500 Edits. For the check of the same or other biolocical persons behind users, it would be good to ckeck all edits. (Sometimes i have had users with ie. 4.000 Edits and only 1 or 2 edits in timly difficult situations in their whole combined edit-life.) When there are privacy concernd then the tool can display in a modus only the timly difficult edits and maybe 5 or 10 Edits before and after. --Fg68at 20:42, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] ChampsElysees.org

Why did you deleted ChampsElysees.org This site has been in wikipedia since 1998! And you blocked it, why? Because I added it in others languages versions, is this forbidden? And in the Tour de France page, so go to Tour de France website and look which website they choose to inform about Champs Elysees arrival for the race. This is the only 100% website in french, English and Chinese. With an unique virtual visit ( created by us like the Map). Do you know a better site to know more about Champs Elysees? It is published with the Champs Elysees Committee. It is the Offical website of Champs Elysees Paris. I dont understand.

Thx

Eric

Dear Eric, the link has been removed because Wikipedia tends to keep the number of external links at a minimum. See w:en:Wikipedia:External links for more information. The fact that you added it to other language versions as well did not help. Please note that the site has not been blocked. Long-term Wikipedia editors can still add the link, but I recommend you not to add it as it appears you are the owner or creator of the site. --Erwin 17:07, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Changing username for SUL account

Hello Erwin, I understand you are a steward and you can globally handle SUL issues. I recently requested to rename my main wiki, en Wikipedia, account from Marsa Lahminal to Samar. And though there were users on other projects already named Samar, the local bureaucrat created a SUL account for me. I individually requested to be renamed on Meta (which was done), Simple Wikipedia (which was not done, see here), and Commons (done). However, there are certain problems on other projects, since I cannot speak the language, I cannot request for a name change. I would really appreciate if you can help me in this regard.

Secondly, my Marsa Lahminal account is also SUL account, so when I navigated from one wiki project to other (say from Commons to en Wiki), Marsa Lahminal account was recreated there. I have requested a local bureaucrat to block my account on en wiki, but I am quite sure it will be recreated on other projects too unless I don't rename all my account. Is it possible if you could rename all the accounts and block/delete the old one? I can provide a proof if you need of my accounts on these projects. Regards. Samar 20:44, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello, at most projects it is possible to request a name change in English. Most users with SUL requests don't speak the language. For projects with bureaucrats you will have to locally request such a rename. See Index of pages where renaming can be requested for the various pages where to place your request. If there are no local bureaucrats you can place your request at Steward requests/SUL requests and a steward will help you. Regarding your second question I'm afraid I can't really help you. As said you need to request this locally for projects with bureaucrats. It is possible to request deletion of your global account, such that you won't automatically login anymore. This can also be done at Steward requests/SUL requests. Regards, Erwin 19:45, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] SBHandler bug report

Hoi Erwin, the following message appears when trying to use SBHandler:

Sorry for this ugly message & thank you. df| 13:51, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, everything beyond saving the page has been broken since the last site update. Firebug isn't working at present, so I can't tell you more - but I'll do that shortly and pass info along.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 03:55, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
Dferg, thanks to your "ugly" message I was able to find the error quite fast. Mike, the software update caused an unexpected response and the script halted. It should have been possible to add a path to the blacklist by following the link to Special:SpamBlacklist. If not, that's another bug. In any case, I just added a domain from Talk:Spam blacklist. So it seems to work fine. Please let me know if it doesn't for you. Thanks for both your messages. --Erwin 17:33, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Checkuser request

Thank you very much for your assistant unfortunately further checking show it is a mix contribution. Not able to block. Sigh, just have to live with it, I guess. Yosri 13:45, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome. Too bad you can't block the IP. --Erwin 15:11, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] StringFunctions

Hi Erwin

Groet nl:wikt:Gebruiker:Jcwf Jcwf 00:48, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Helaas, want het lijkt me erg handig. Groet, Erwin 09:16, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
--Erwin 20:24, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Bot

Hi Erwin, sorry that I contact you directly, but could you give us a temporary bot flag for some days. We want to create some subpages in DBpedia/ontology Steward_requests/Bot_status#DBpedia-Bot.40DBpedia. After that we are done. We already talked to Brion and Daniel about it. The DBpedia project will soon be connected to the Toolserver as well I guess. Now we are kind of in a hurry. Tanks, SebastianHellmann 19:59, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I'm afraid I can't give your bot a flag myself. I did move the request to the appropriate place: Meta:Requests for bot status/DBpedia-Bot. If I were you I'd start editing with your bot. A bot flag is no big deal, so I expect a bureaucrat to just give a flag as soon as he notices the recent changes being flooded. Gruss, Erwin 20:46, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] SynchCrosswiki

Saw this -- but having a redirect like that creates broken redirects that folks then clean up. You probably want to make it a simple link: [[m:User:Erwin]]  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 16:45, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Actually, I think they should be ignored by the special page, but making a normal is the easiest solution. Thanks. --Erwin 18:20, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] User Pages

Actually I don't know how to request for bot flag and first question is what is bot flag. My purpose of creating user pages is so that each user gets his/her page in blue. Obviously they can change and add whatever they want to later. I'm a new user to wikipedia and that's why I don't know much about editing articles. Second thing is I'm not very good at editing Hindi language articles but still I want to make some contribution to the hiwiki so I discussed this with the admins on hiwiki and they agreed to me adding content to user pages so that I stay connected to hiwiki. In the meantime I'm learning more Hindi so that I may edit articles correctly in the future but for now I'm only adding content to user pages. हिन्दी 13:42, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

I would recommend that you not do this. Users might not want their userpage created there, so I would be of a mind to just stop doing it and move on to doing something else. I think that the decision to make a user's userpage should rest with the owner of the account, and not someone else using a bot to make it. Razorflame 17:13, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] neilsonrabelo spam

Thanks for that :) I've reverted everywhere now (thank goodness for global rollback :) ) - thanks again! - Alison 08:28, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome and thank you for noticing and reverting it, which is actually most of the work. --Erwin 08:35, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Galician Wikibooks

I'll tell an admin about that, there's one who is still active at Galician Wikipedia, so he can do the job. I can't propose myself to admin (according to Galician Wikipedia's rules, extensible to other Wikimedia projects in Galician IMO), and actually I don't really like responsabilities ;). Thanks for the warning. --GallaecioE logo? 15:19, 15 decembro 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Mardetanha@fa.wiki

It is quite clear why you have not done the check user for user:Mardetanha. He is a steward and probably your friend, so he can do whatever he wants including having sockpuppets. I will definitely pursue this matter in whatever ways necessary. You won't find the results pleasant either for you or for your beloved friend.--Feuer1000 14:32, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Well, regardless of the outcome, who are you to blame someone for using sockpuppets? I find it improbable that your first and only edit to a WMF project is a checkuser request of a steward. --Erwin 15:51, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
First of all, I am not stupid to post a checkuser request for a steward with my main account. Have I done that, the accused party would ban my account in a matter a second! Secondly you better do your job and perform the checkuser, instead of accusing me. Although I am sure that you have done the checkuser and already observed that he uses sockpuppets. Otherwise you could easily say that the outcome is negative. Just wait a few days and you will see the true outcome for you, mardetanha and the third supporter of this dirty band who is no one but your beloved friend User:Mike.lifeguard. Goede gelukkameraad!--Feuer1000 17:29, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
So you're using sockpuppet accounts to accuse people? Seems a bit more stupid IMO... –Juliancolton | Talk 17:37, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Stupid are the people who think they can easily abuse their power and remain unharmed. Is it obvious that who are stupid then? I fully understand why you are angry. You can't revenge, huh?--Feuer1000 17:43, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
As long as you're hiding behind sockpuppets I see no reason to take you serious. --Erwin 20:40, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
I don't really expect you to do the checkuser (read: to announce the result of checkuser). Your friend has already started to look innocent. That's an old show, only good for tricking small children. The accused party says he is innocent and is ready to be checkusered and you say there is no need for it (yeah there is no need because you already know his sock). Indeed you are a part of this and not eligible to do the ckeckuser. You won't tell the truth even if you do it.--Feuer1000 22:19, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
hello erwin though this user should be troll but i don't mind to be checkusered anytime. tnx --Mardetanha talk 17:40, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Nevertheless, I see no reason to do so. --Erwin 20:40, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
