A barnstar for you![edit]

This barnstar is given to you for your help with the 2011 fundraiser translation.
This barnstar is given to you for your help with the 2011 fundraiser translation.

Hi! I just want to thank you and give you this barnstar for your help with the translation of the 2011 fundraiser! The fundraiser was the best we ever had, both in terms of the amount we collected and in terms of number of translations. We couldn't have done either one without the help we got from you and other translators. If you are interested, we made a report, which has some statistics about the translations.

And: I have one more request, and that is that you take this survey. You may have got an e-mail about it, and if you did, please ignore this. But if you didn't it would be great if you would take this survey too, so we can learn to improve the translation experience.

Again, thanks for your help with translations – you're awesome! Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 13:28, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:06, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Superprotect letter update[edit]

Hi FocalPoint,

Along with more hundreds of others, you recently signed Letter to Wikimedia Foundation: Superprotect and Media Viewer, which I wrote.

Today, we have 562 signatures here on Meta, and another 61 on change.org, for a total of 623 signatures. Volunteers have fully translated it into 16 languages, and begun other translations. This far exceeds my most optimistic hopes about how many might sign the letter -- I would have been pleased to gain 200 siguatures -- but new signatures continue to come.

I believe this is a significant moment for Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Very rarely have I seen large numbers of people from multiple language and project communities speak with a unified voice. As I understand it, we are unified in a desire for the Wikimedia Foundation to respect -- in actions, in addition to words -- the will of the community who has built the Wikimedia projects for the benefit of all humanity. I strongly believe it is possible to innovate and improve our software tools, together with the Wikimedia Foundation. But substantial changes are necessary in order for us to work together smoothly and productively. I believe this letter identifies important actions that will strongly support those changes.

Have you been discussing these issues in your local community? If so, I think we would all appreciate an update (on the letter's talk page) about how those discussions have gone, and what people are saying. If not, please be bold and start a discussoin on your Village Pump, or in any other venue your project uses -- and then leave a summary of what kind of response you get on the letter's talk page.

Finally, what do you think is the right time, and the right way, to deliver this letter? We could set a date, or establish a threshold of signatures. I have some ideas, but am open to suggestions.

Thank you for your engagement on this issue, and please stay in touch. -Pete F (talk) 18:45, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Future IdeaLab Campaigns results[edit]

Last December, I invited you to help determine future ideaLab campaigns by submitting and voting on different possible topics. I'm happy to announce the results of your participation, and encourage you to review them and our next steps for implementing those campaigns this year. Thank you to everyone who volunteered time to participate and submit ideas.

With great thanks,

Harassment workshop[edit]

Greetings! You are receiving this message because, at some point in the past, you have participated in a discussion around the topic of harassment. The Support and Safety team is holding a series of consultations gathering feedback on the best potential solutions to the problem. The next stage is a workshop where we hope to narrow the focus to individual actionable ideas and explore how to bring some of these ideas to life.

Best regards, the Support and Safety team via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:35, 17 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Open Call for Individual Engagement Grants[edit]

Greetings! The Individual Engagement Grants (IEG) program is accepting proposals until April 12th to fund new tools, research, outreach efforts, and other experiments that enhance the work of Wikimedia volunteers. Whether you need a small or large amount of funds (up to $30,000 USD), IEGs can support you and your team’s project development time in addition to project expenses such as materials, travel, and rental space.

With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources 15:57, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Global renamers[edit]

Hello, sorry in advance if I am bothering you. I was checking some user profile for some wikimerics about crosswiki users and I've just discovered you are a sysop on elwiki with a good crosswiki and metawiki activity.

I want to inform you about a possibility here on meta. After the SUL finalization there is a search for Global_renamers.

As I did with other users, I am contacting you because at the moment in Global_renamers#Users_with_global_rename_access and Stewards#List_of_current_stewards, if I correctly remember, we have only one el>3 (Geraki, he is el-N). That's probably enough, although if you look at the stats he is not one of the most active, so maybe a second el-N might not be a bad idea.

Now, as far as I can see from your comments in talks you have a good English knowledge, a cross-wiki experience and you are sysop on a project, so you know how to deal with user-related issues. If you want to be more involved in the GR tasks in the future, feel free to apply. We have accepted in the past months candidates with much lower cross-wiki activity or language skills than you, so you probably have good chances. Constant activity is not a big issue, if look at the GR stats. After all, it is a simple task, you just need to read carefully few guidelines. If you want to apply, I suggest you to translate or update some of the meta page Global renamers into your own language if needed.

Please notice that I am not an expert user on meta nor a local bureaucrat or sysop, I just care about the "variety" of the meta environment and I though that it was useful to inform some users of the opportunity. If you know yourself some profile who might be interested, please let him/her know this "opportunity". If you are not interested, or you prefer to wait to have more experience, or you think you won't be very active in the following months, that's great as well.

Have a nice day.--Alexmar983 (talk) 10:12, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alexmar983. You are not bothering. I would not mind helping once in a while with a simple task like renaming. I checked (and translated to Greek) the Global rename policy and it seems straight forward. --FocalPoint (talk) 14:35, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Good, so ask for the flag! I mean you translated Global rename policy/el so you are clearly filling a gap here... Of course, you can ask around o other GRs if you wan to be sure about the task, but if you leave a request for the flag, I don't se why we anyone should oppose to you. You are a standard candidate, and we should really have a little bit more el-N users with meta flags.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:41, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. there is also Global renamers ;)--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:42, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I saw that, but it is not first priority, as it is for internal use. I will put it in my (long) to-do list. --FocalPoint (talk) 14:48, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
sure, as you like it. BTW, I spend 70% of my wiki time leaving messages in project talks and personal talks etc... it is frustrating the big potential of variety we lose because of lack of information. talking about useful flag and information, do you know that local sysops can perform mass message now? Information was not very linear for some languages. There is also a group of MassMessage senders here on meta. I also don't think there are a lot of el-N in OTRS/Users. Maybe it is not needed, but still "minor" languages experience sometimes a reduced flow of information, that's why we should look for more candidates actively, IMHO.--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:20, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
BTW talking about gaps, see here a perfect Easter egg :)--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:36, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, this was very good! Let us see if anyone will act! --FocalPoint (talk) 15:49, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I hope so... I informed "minor" it-N projects and they were very happy. I hop that for "minor" languages is the same...--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:51, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if the whole thing turned up so "critical", please if you have time check the archive and you can check yourself that there is no real difference between you and other elected candidates. And no specific activity requirements... I mean some of the level of activity of GR elected in the last months are far from great, where does this concern even come from now? Wiki is so funny sometimes. Take it easy. And thank you for putting your face whatever the result will be.--Alexmar983 (talk) 11:50, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Alexmar983, I am well aware that "no good deed goes unpunished". I volunteered for some meta cleaning up (this is what you asked me as far as I can tell). I have no objection to help. I promised to help cleaning up. I also promised that I do not intend to have as many contributions of either the stone-splitter, nor the Killer-of-my-breakfast :) :) I will even offer to you some insight, as far as /my vision of Wikipedia/ (a bad link was here, see below) is concerned: If I had to choose between inclusionism and deletionism I know very well where I stand. And I am standing strong in favour of the way that policies are applied in en-wikipedia. I am willing to answer to you any question, but "to check the archive and...."... oh no.. I am interest in helping with a broom for my corner of the room, as any responsible person would, but I do not care for flags or anything. --FocalPoint (talk)

just wanted to prove my good faith... if you check it does not help me, don't worry. I don't know why a profile like yours is not good anymore, this is quite a surprise. BTW, there are other brooms and they will find you soon or later, don't worry. I cannot open the link but I assume you are a inclusivist? (notability bing the beacon of enwiki). I am a inclusivist especially when a good work (source, layout) is provided. Do you know that I wrote two article on elwiki so far while exercising my Greek and that one was about an important Russian enterprise and it was canceled? Not even an information in the talk page. That really didn't help. --Alexmar983 (talk) 14:01, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies for the bad link. I really meant this, that and that. Yes I meant inclusioninst. The en-wiki is excellent in comparison to elwiki! I believe that the sysop acted hastily and in good faith for the deletion of the article you mention but... come on , it is only the 10th IT in Ru according to Forbes :) . Nevertheless, such a deletion tells you much about how articles about companies are treated in elwiki. I will be glad to see you contributing there. --FocalPoint (talk) 15:16, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Alexmar983, thank you for the proposal, the support and the experience. --FocalPoint (talk) 15:12, 28 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it could have been better but it was instructive for me, so thank to you.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:29, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

2016 Community Wishlist Survey[edit]

Hi,

You’re getting this message because you participated in the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey and we want to make sure you don't miss it this year – or at least can make the conscious choice to ignore if it you want to. The 2015 survey decided what the Community Tech team should work on during 2016. It was also the focus of Wikimedia hackathons and work by other developers. You can see the status of wishes from the 2015 wishlist at 2015 Community Wishlist Survey/Results.

The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is now open for wishes. You can create proposals until November 20. You will be able to vote on which wishes you think are best or most important between November 28 and December 12. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:17, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Adjusted text[edit]

There has been a request to inform all who voted in the RfC about interlinking accounts involved with paid editing about the following adjustment in the "statement of issue" on Sept 18th, 2017.

It was clarified that this effort will help deal not only with impersonation of specific Wikipedians but also claims of being in good standing made by those who are not.[1] Thanks. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:59, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

JSTOR account redistribution (The Wikipedia Library)[edit]

Hi - according to our records you received a free account for JSTOR through The Wikipedia Library. Because we’ve used up all of our allocated accounts, and it’s been some time since they were distributed, we want to redistribute any accounts that aren’t being used to users on our waitlist.

If you’re still using, or plan to use, your JSTOR access, no problem! Simply head over to the Library Card platform, log in, and request a renewal of your account. You should be able to do this from your user page, or the JSTOR signup page. If you can’t find the renewal button, or have any other issues or questions about this, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. We’ll begin redistributing inactive accounts in September; if you request renewal after then we will only be able to reactivate your account if we have spots remaining. Thanks, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:32, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
