Wikimedia UK 2.0 Voting is open :-)

A warm hello to all those signed up as guarantor members of the soon-to-be-rebooted UK chapter! Voting is now open over at meta - there's tons of information online over there, and the mailing list has been very active too. Discussion, comment (and even the inevitable technical gremlins!) are most welcome at the meta pages, otherwise please do send in your vote/s, and tell a friend about the chapter too :-) Privatemusings 22:30, 20 September 2008 (UTC)I'm not actually involved in the election workings, and am just dropping these notes in to help try and spread the word :-) I welcome any or all comment too, but 'election related' stuff really is better suited to the meta pages :-)[reply]

About TOTW

You should go to Translation of the week/Translation candidates to add new candiadates. --RekishiEJ 23:05, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please, support some or all of my proposed candidates on the TOTW candidate page. They all meet ideal TOTW candidate guidelines, have less than 14 interwiki links, and many of them are important to a certain extent, such as anti-capitalism, Shimazu Nariakira (島津齊彬), w:Nakahama Manjirō (中濱萬次郎), spelling bee, spelling society, separation of concern. separation of presentation and content.--RekishiEJ 08:58, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Restore talk page access

Hi Fr33man. You blocked me over at Simple and revoked talk page access and email access inappropriately. I did not misuse the page. Please restore access and unprotect the page so I can edit it. Thanks, Codedon 20:26, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There's no reason to remove talk page access after you decline an unblock request. Please return it because as the blocking policy on Wikipedia states, "editing of the user's talk page should only be disabled in the case of continued abuse of the talk page". I still have comments to make on Simple. Respectfully, Codedon 21:02, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please stop now arguing about you're blocks elsewhere or you will be blocked on meta as well. Leave it. We don't wish that you edit there anymore. Also, it's not only that you are a sockpuppet by checkuser evidence, but also blocked on enwiki. We can simply endorse this block and take it as reason to block you on simple. If this kind of bothering people on this wiki goes on, I'll block you. Thanks, -Barras talk 21:49, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, Barras. I will stop arguing. I understand your position. Codedon 21:07, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly!

so true. I'm checking a certain group of wikis every day, and there's no record of it. This "evidence-based" giving out of flags has some serious flaws... Seb az86556 12:31, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No pooh! I am always on #cvn-sw when I'm active and most of the time I find little to do. I think flags should in part be given based on demonstrated need, but also on demonstrated trust. For instance, I'm a checkuser on a very x-wiki vandalised project. The enwiki vandals tend to come onto my home wiki, and also then onto some small wikis. I then check SUL activity and can sometimes see a need for a block on a small wiki; often where a global lock is not required. I can't do it, yet (hopefully). I also have a good working relationship with the stewards and the other WMF checkusers. I block xwiki vandals all the time, yet I still feel I need to justify my lack of reversions via SWMT; which I monitor every day yet often find I don't need to act. Go figure!? :-) I guess it is just one of those things?? fr33kman t - c 12:52, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Global sysop

Congratulations! - you have been promoted to the global sysop group. Please remember to abide the relevant policy. Regards, --dferg ☎ talk 14:21, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

SRSD

Hi! There's no need to add {{done}} to the bot-reported section at SRSD. The bot automatically removes the pages once they are deleted (although if a page is kept it has to be removed by hand). Adding comments to that section may confuse the bot.[1] Jafeluv 08:23, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, coolio :) fr33kman t - c 12:36, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiquote:ET reference system

Hello! Would you please add mentioned code in here to here. It should mark the background of references in blue while using them. Thanks in advance!

Best wishes --Kanakukk 21:23, 11 October 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Sorry for the trouble. DerHexer from IRC helped me already. --Kanakukk 21:33, 11 October 2010 (UTC).[reply]
No problem, it only matters that the job was done; not who did it. :) fr33kman 02:59, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

your user talk at zu:wp plus speedy-delete

Hi. I was looking for a globalsysop who could help me with a couple of speedy deletes at zu:wp here. Unfortunately, your user talk page loops onto itself. Please rectify and then help with the speedy delete (if you agree). Cheers! --Baba Tabita 12:42, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Redlink

Hi! Simple:CRAT on your statement page is a redlink. Perhaps you meant simple:WP:CRAT? Good luck in the election, by the way :) Jafeluv 10:07, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A belated, thanks and "you too" :) fr33kman 23:42, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Candidacy

Hey, Fr33kman, I just translated your statement for the elections into Shqip, and just wanted to say good luck!

Greeting from a Japanese Wikipedian. If elected, you would be the only Steward with some understanding in Japanese. I hope that you will address x-wiki issues involving projects in Japanese as a Steward. Good luck!--Tomo suzuki 13:40, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

私を信頼してくれてありがとう *(^.^)* I certainly will make it a priority if elected. My grammar is not the best in Japanese, but I have decided to enrol in an intermediate level course with my employer; it's an interesting and elegant language. fr33kman 23:38, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Elections result

Hi there fr33kman,

seems like you've been approved as a steward.
Congratulations.
Please take care in honouring your new privileges.
Good luck and have fun!

Yours faithfully.

Ditto, Congratulations buddy I know you'll do great and I'm incredibly glad everyone else saw that (though that was clear from the first day of the election ;) ) Jalexander 18:35, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, one should never brag, lol .... but seriously though, thanks dude! :) fr33kman 19:16, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks.

checkuser request re Draubb. On projects where there is local checkuser, it's customary to notify a user that a request has been filed. For cross-wiki abuse, it's easy to overlook the courtesy of this, and "vandalism fighters" often take shortcuts. However, in this case, the only activity of any substance was on Wikiversity, so if a checkuser request is filed at meta, simply because WV has no checkusers, notice to the involved editor would seem to be appropriate, and that could be a general principle. This would then have been seen by the WV community, I'd certainly have noticed it promptly, since I'm actively monitoring Draubb activity to keep it from causing serious damage.

The specific problem here is that Draubb activity will look like what would be disruptive on any other WMF wiki. Druabb, under a prior user name, may have begun with random scribbling and unintelligible comments. He did all kinds of things, including pretending to be an administrator. Kids play! He registered lots of accounts, having no clue, I suspect, as to why this might even be a problem. When I realized what was happening, I saw an opportunity to avert the creation of a trained sockmaster and vandal. I approached him with sympathy and developed the v:Wikiversity:Playspace concept, facing some level of opposition, but, in fact, most of the opposition has disappeared. Draubb is less trouble to handle, as to actual disruption, as a cooperating though highly unskilled and unsophisticated user, who makes mistakes, but sticking to one account, than as someone who had already figured out how to reboot his home modem, and maybe the school computer modem, starting up a new "nick," as he called it, in explaining to me why being blocked was "no problem." In fact, he is learning, now, how to cooperate, as well as improving in his handling of wikitext, and his ability to coherently communicate in writing, and education is the mission of Wikiversity, not "articles."

Thanks for recognizing that this is a local issue at Wikiversity. If the user creates problems at other wikis, those can and should be addressed, but I'd recommend positive interaction when possible, it's more effective that simply deleting and blocking without any recognition of the human being at the other end of that internet connection. Good luck. --Abd 17:57, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're very welcome! As you know I'm an admin of a small wiki myself and understand the desires and needs of such a community versus the needs and desires of the wider community. We've had Draubb at simplewiki in the past so I know the behaviour and agree it's probably containable and directable. I think we should leave his actions on enwv to yourselves and only do CU requests when he strays out of the local project or upon request of local consensus, preferably requested by local admin(s). Certainly we should not be doing account locks for accounts that are not xwiki in nature. IMO account locks are the final measure to deal with a problem, not the first. Bon chance! :) fr33kman 18:37, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. My approach to Draubb was to try to understand what he wanted to do, and find a way for him to do it without damaging the wiki. WV is more compatible with that, naturally, than the other wikis, because of the educational focus, but at some point Draubb -- or someone like him -- might be ready for more. As an example, a young reader at simplewiki might read an article and review it on the Talk page, saying what was hard to understand, asking questions about it. That could really help make an article, ideally designed for ease of understanding, better! The very difficulties that the user experiences would be helpful to know! But this could also be done at Wikiversity, I can imagine starting a whole Elementary School that would foster such activities, in coordination with, say, simplewiki. In the meantime, I suppose, if such young "vandals" appear, they might be directed to Wikiversity. I'm not thrilled at the idea of an avalanche of such, because I'm the only WV user working on this particular kind of issue, but my suspicion is that there are others who might be interested. Perhaps such young very users should have a sponsor or mentor or "friend," we might call it, who guides (and contains, but nicely). A project could coordinate and monitor this. --Abd 01:39, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well I think that the last thing we want to do is block that school from editing. It's not a big place and is a great resource for both simplewiki/wikt and also junior wv. A person on our wiki I think you should get in contact with is Peter who is a teacher who fosters a similar attitude to your own. He works with his own pupils and also with some classes in Japan. He's quite friendly, you may know him already? I'm also quite child editor positive myself as long as certain guidelines and policies are abided by and both WP:V and CIVIL are respected. On simplewiki we recently wrote WP:CHILD. :) fr33kman 02:01, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I will contact Peterdownunder. --Abd 18:03, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
