Wikipedia Trainers

Hi Frank, I work at wikiHow, and came across the Wikipedia Trainers program you started in Germany. It seemed to me to be a an excellent way to reach out to an under-represented group within the wiki world. Kudos! I'm very interested in learning more about ways to engage older adults in the Wiki way, and was wondering if you could share any additional insights from that experience? The wiki page for that course only recounts information from the first day of the class. Also, how have you found working with Moodle to be? It seems to be a very versatile CMS platform, though I was somewhat disappointed to find that they opted not to use MediaWiki as their wiki platform. Vortrag 2008-11-20, Univ. Köln

Leider konnte ich nicht bis zum Ende des Vortrags bleiben und daher diese Frage nicht loswerden:

Sie haben den Vortrag sich ja sehr "community-driven" entwickeln lassen. Ich nehme an, dass Sie das öfter machen. Wie häufig führt das für Sie selbst zu einem Ergebnis, das sie für besser/befriedigender/spannender halten als einen klassischen Vortrag?

PS: Auch wenn ich nur 45 Minuten dabei war, konnte ich trotzdem etliche interessante Neuigkeiten mitnehmen- mein Account ist auch noch ganz frisch!

Hallo, das Vorgehen führt in 99% der Fälle zu einem besseren Ergebnis, setzt aber voraus, dass man bei einem Thema und allen Fragen drumherum wirklich sattelfest ist. Ehrlichgesagt, macht mir das dann auch mehr Spaß (weil es lebendiger ist) und ich bekomme auf diese Weise eine gute Rückmeldung, was das Publikum wirklich interessiert. Dass dem Vortragenden das mehr Spaß macht, als den Vortrag jetzt zum x-tem Mal zu halten und auch die Vorzüge der Rückmeldung des Auditoriums ist klar. Mir als Neuling hätte vielleicht etwas mehr Struktur und Aufbereitung besser geholfen, aber andererseits hat Ihr Vortrag so gut "funktioniert", dass ich mich registriert habe.

Das Konstruktionsprinzip Ihres Vortrags ("community driven") folgte ja dem Konstruktionsprinzip der Wikipedia. Sie schätzen das Ergebnis zu 99% besser als die konventionelle Variante ein, andererseits bin ich mir aufgrund dieses einen Vortrags nicht so sicher ... Das sind natürlich nur subjektive Einzelmeinungen, aber denken Sie, dass da ein Prinzip dahinter steckt? Wikipedia: "Super" in den Augen der Macher, aber eher "Naja" für die reinen Konsumenten (andererseits natürlich immerhin so gut, dass die Site zu den größeren ;) im Web gehört). Vielleicht werde ich aber gerade etwas arg "akademisch" ... --hjatwm 21:17, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

-jha- zeigte zwei typsiche Beispiele für dazugehörige Mängel in unserem Artikelbestand auf, z.B. w:de:Querlenker und wagte eine Ursachenspekulation. Meine private Ursachenspekulation ist ja eher die wettbewerbsorientierte Einstellung in den Ingenierwissenschaften, die wenig zum "Verschenken" von Wissen passt, aber das kann ein Physiker-Vorurteil sein.

Ich habe jetzt fast ein Jahr fast nichts auf enwiki gemacht, aber mein subjektiver Eindruck war ähnlich. Gerade der Kernbestand der Artikel in dem Bereich ist kurz, schlecht und fehlt. Nur Obskures, dass es zu Medienpräsenz gebracht hat oder jemandes Steckenpferd ist wird ausführlich breitgetreten. Überspitzt gesagt, hat eine Maschine nur dann einen ausführlichen Artikel, wenn sie ein Perpetuum Mobile ist.

Warum ich Dich hier vollsülze? Naja, wo Du jetzt unser Mann für den Public Outreach bist, vielleicht fällt Dir auch für dieses Thema etwas ein, was sich machen lässt?

Hi Frank, nach einem Telefonat mit Elke versuche ich dich anzusprechen, weil du wesentlich im Video-Projekt involviert warst. Public outreach

Grüß Gott, Herr Schulenburg, Sie schreiben auf Ihrer deutschen Seite, dass Sie den Bereich "Public outreach" leiten. Leider verstehe ich den Begriff "Public outreach" noch nicht richtig. Ich nehme an, dass das eine Art von Öffentlichkeitsarbeit ist. Auf dieser Seite hier habe ich die Erklärung auch nicht gefunden. Könnten Sie versuchen, in einfachen Worten Ihre Tätigkeit zu beschreiben? Was mich zusätzlich interessiert, sind Sie ein fest angestellter oder freier Mitarbeiter? Als Wikipedia-Begeisterter ist diese "Wikimedia Foundation" und das Drumherum für mich wenig verständlich, aber das mag an meinen geringen Fremdsprachkenntnissen liegen. Über eine Antwort würde ich mich sehr freuen, wenn möglich in deutscher Sprache, denn mein Englisch ist seit der Schulzeit a weng eingerostet. Beste Grüße aus Bayern ------

Der Begriff "Public Outreach" hat meines Wissens nach in den meisten Sprachen kein Pendant. Deshalb wird es am einfachsten sein, meine Ziele und Aufgaben zu erläutern: Als "Head of Public Outreach" (festangestellt bei der Wikimedia Foundation, der Betreiberin der Wikipedia, siehe http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Staff) bestehen meine Ziele darin,

• mehr Menschen für die Mitarbeit in den Wikimedia-Projekten zu begeistern und die Autorenbasis zu verbreitern
• das öffentliche Verständnis der Wikipedia und ihrer Schwesterprojekte zu erweitern und den Einstieg für neue Autoren zu erleichtern

Beides hängt eng miteinander zusammen.

Projekte wie die Wikipedia werden von Tausenden von Freiwilligen getragen, die tagtäglich an der Vermehrung und Verbesserung der Inhalte arbeiten. Je mehr Menschen ihr Wissen beitragen, umso besser werden die Inhalte. Deshalb gilt es, die Autorenbasis zu erweitern und gleichzeitig dafür zu sorgen, dass die Inhalte der Wikipedia von einer gesellschaftlich möglichst breit gestreuten Autorenschaft getragen werden. Momentan besteht die Autorenschaft vor allem aus jungen Männern – und dies spiegelt sich auch in der Qualität der Inhalte wider. In nahezu allen Sprachausgaben sind beispielsweise Themen zur Technik besser dargestellt, als Themenbereiche wie Literatur und Kunst. Dabei liegt aber in der Einbindung von Frauen und älteren Menschen ein enormes Potential. Ältere Menschen mit ihren Erfahrungen und ihrem großen Wissensschatz an die Wikipedia heranzuführen und sie als Autoren zu gewinnen, ist eines meiner Anliegen im Bereich Public Outreach.

Weiterhin sind wir uns bewusst, dass die Wikipedia noch Aufholbedarf im Bereich Benutzerfreundlichkeit hat und eine meiner aktuellen Aufgaben besteht darin, zusammen mit einem Team von Programmierern und Experten für die Gestaltung benutzerfreundlicher Webseiten für Verbesserung in diesem Bereich zu sorgen und das Bearbeiten der Inhalte so leicht wie möglich zu gestalten. Gleichzeitig gilt es, den Zugang zur Wikipedia durch die Entwicklung und Bereitstellung von leicht verständlichen Lehrmaterialien zu erleichtern. Innerhalb des nächsten Jahres werde ich an der Schaffung solcher Lehrmaterialien (etwa Broschüren "Erste Schritte für neue Wikipedia-Autoren" oder kurzer Lehrfilme) arbeiten. Darüberhinaus habe ich die Veranstaltungsreihe "Wikipedia Academy" initiiert, deren Ziel es ist, Einstiegshilfen für qualifizierte potentielle Autoren – etwa durch speziell auf die jeweilige Zielgruppe zugeschnittene Workshops – zu geben.

Dies alles kann nicht von einem Einzelnen geleistet werden. Insofern besteht eine meiner Aufgaben darin, die Arbeit der lokalen Wikimedia-Chapter zu erleichtern und zu unterstützen.

Einladung zur TA´10 vom Netzwerk Technikfolgenabschätzung

Sehr geehrter Herr Schulenburg, das Netzwerk Technikfolgenabschätzung (http://www.netzwerk-ta.net) möchte sich gerne stärker in Wikipedia engagieren und an Inhalten zu unserem Fachbereich mitarbeiten. Wir suchen daher jemanden, der sich gut in der WP-Community auskennt und auch ein gewisses Verständnis für unsere akademische Perspektive hat. Dies ist aus unserer Sicht bei Ihnen der Fall, weshalb wir Sie gerne als Redner zu unserer kommenden Tagung TA'10 (http://www.oeaw.ac.at/ita/ta10) nach Wien einladen würden. Am Dienstag dem 1. Juni möchten wir dort von 9:30 bis 11:00 Uhr einen Workshop abhalten, für den wir Sie gerne gewinnen würden.

Die Session (Workshop) richtet sich primär an jene Mitglieder des deutschsprachigen Netzwerks Technikfolgenabschätzung, die planen, gemeinsam an der Verbesserung des Stichworts "Technikfolgenabschätzung" und verwandter Begriffe in der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia zu arbeiten. Der bisherige Haupteintrag entspricht nur zum Teil dem Stand der Forschung, sodass wir Raum für Ergänzungen, Erweiterungen und Überarbeitungen sehen; dazu kommt, dass viele wichtige Begriffe überhaupt noch nicht vorkommen. In Vorbereitung dieses Unterfangens haben wir bereits einige Diskussionen geführt, der Workshop soll gleichsam der offizielle Start sein.

Einige von uns sind bereits als Wikipedia-AutorInnen aktiv gewesen, der Wissensstand ist nicht zuletzt durch einen in diesem Kreis bekannten Bericht zum Thema Wikipedia und Wissenschaft (http://epub.oeaw.ac.at/ita/ita-projektberichte/d2-2a52-2.pdf) durchaus schon fortgeschritten (die Inhalte des Berichts können vorausgesetzt werden). Woran es uns mangelt, sind praktische Erfahrungen und Einsichten in Hinblick auf folgende Themen:

- Wikipedia-Portale - Themengebiete - Communities - Kategorien - Wikiprojekte - Redaktionen (- "original research")

Dazu ersuchen wir Sie, uns einen Input zu leisten. Als Vortragstitel schlagen wir z.B. vor:

"Portale, Projekte, Kategorien und Redaktionen in Wikipedia"

Wir haben insgesamt 1,5 Stunden Zeit und erhoffen uns einen Powerpoint (o.dgl.)-gestützten Vortrag von ca. 30 Minuten zu den obigen Themen. Laptop, Beamer und eine Internetverbindung werden vorhanden sein. Der Grossteil der Zeit, also ca. eine Stunde, soll Nachfragen zum Vortrag, der Diskussion und der gemeinsamen Planung der weiteren Vorgangsweise gewidmet sein. Es würde uns sehr freuen, wenn Sie sich dazu bereit erklären würden. Die Reisekosten werden selbstverständlich von uns getragen.

Verifiability/NPOV video

Hello Frank,

I was just checking out some of the videos made for WMF, some of them are really fun and interesting. I especially liked the Usernames video!

Being a stick in the mud ( ;-) ) I also watched the Verifiability and NPOV video, and found some minor inaccuracies. (source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa0Nmv9qsd8 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Verifiability_and_Neutral_point_of_view_%28Common_Craft%29-1280px-en.ogv )

• While not entirely unique to the English Wikipedia, the verifiability rule is not -in fact- a rule used on all Wikipedias, it is not a requirement for an accurate wikipedia (though at times it can help! :-) ).

• The Neutral Point Of View appears to be presented as being synonymous with what we actually call the Balanced Point Of View, complete with see-saw graphic. BPOV is a technique that is often used by journalists. A downside of a balanced point of view is that it tends to give undue weight to borderline minority opinions. This is one of the key reasons why it is unsuitable for encyclopedias.

• The video continues by suggesting that articles should be balanced. In reality, balancing articles is not permitted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:UNDUE#Undue_weight .

• I think that -strictly speaking- the video does have all the right elements in all the right places, but from my perception it somehow manages to mangle it ever so slightly, in a way that ends up veering off into forbidden territory.

Would it be possible to release a new video, correcting these issues? Can the script be found on a wiki somewhere, so we can go ahead and {{sofixit}} ? ;-)

Visibility of Wikimedia Strategic Plan

Frank, As a Campus Ambassador, and a true believer in Wikimedia outreach efforts, I am a bit frustrated with the lack of visibility of the Wikimedia Strategic Plan. I have spent many hours over the last few weeks preaching WP as a research tool and the various ways it can be used in the classroom. Myself and others across the globe are evangelizing WP as a formidable tool in higher education. Librarians and professors alike are coming around to the benefits of WP in the classroom. We are doing this because we understand the strategic plan and know the goals—10,000 students in five years. Unfortunately, the WP community is essentially ignorant of the strategy and the goals. Members of the community, albeit I must assume in good faith, continue to attack the WP tools we are promoting in the classroom—Outlines, Bibliographies are just two examples. Although these attacks may seem to be the norm in WP, I believe they occur far too often, because the general editor corps is oblivious to the strategic plan and goals.

I am not asking the foundation to weigh in on individual debates, that’s the role of the editor corp. What I am asking is that the foundation make the Strategic Plan and the underlying goals abundantly clear to the WP editing community. Visibility of the goals is what’s needed. That visibility is not there today. Actions of editors, whatever they may be, need to be aligned with the strategy. If they are not, anything is OK. Every editor, experienced or inexperienced should be aware of and understand the strategy of the foundation. If they don’t, their actions will not align with those goals. On talk pages, policy and guideline pages, deletion discussions, et. al., the strategy of the foundation should never be more than a click away. A strategy that sits on the self, collecting dusk will not drive results. Hi Mike, sorry for not getting back to you earlier. I had some crazy workload over the last two weeks and I will be travelling quite a bit until November (New York, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt). Back to your question: I admire you and the other volunteers who are making the Wikipedia Education Program a success. You and all the others who are helping to promote Wikipedia in the classroom are just _essential_ for the program and I'm deeply thankful for all the work you're doing. I'm glad that you're aware of the strategic plans of the Foundation and I would would like to hear your opinon on how we can achieve a broader visibility of the strategy. Frank, I think it is simply a matter of highlighting the strategy through linking banners and sidebars, etc. all the time on policy, guideline, essay and relevant project (deletion, signpost, etc.) pages. I think those banners should have a variety of succint messages from the foundation about the details of the goals, progress to date and key initiatives related to those goals. We can't force editors to follow these links and read the plan and if they don't they are to blame for lack of understanding of the strategy. However, if the foundation doesn't make the strategy abundantly visible, then we can't blame WP editors for ignoring the strategy. The foundation has to view their Strategy as a foundation that all editors must understand and align to. First and foremost this has to be an all out marketing effort for the next few years.--Mike Cline 18:03, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

• Hi Kudpung, I was working for Frank when I ran this project: w:en:WP:SCREENCAST. If you look at that project, and specifically the "Software" tab, you will find a number of pieces of software discussed. Hopefully that will help you make a decision. There is no "one-size-fits-all" answer, but I think you will find some good suggestions. Hi. Thanks for this, it was quite helpful but very much out of date. NHowever, the endeffect was that there are no suitable free solutions for Mac. I will have to (disgustedly) have to borrow a PC. Kudpung, it's a year out of date, but I doubt that a year is too much to be of any value at all? Any efforts to update would, I'm sure, be much appreciated. If you can tell me what you want to do, I might be able to suggest something. Leave any questions on the talk page over there -- I'll keep a close eye on that for the next few days. For free software on Mac, I think the built in Quicktime tool is pretty useful. But depending on the needs of your project, there are different possibilities. The online tool we used, screencastomatic.com, seemed to work pretty well also. You can also install Linux for free on a Mac :) But I think your best bet would be to (1) identify clearly what your needs are, and (2) contact the people who worked on that project. -Pete F 04:58, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

Studenten in Indien und anderswo

Hallo Frank,

Der unglückliche Verlauf des Projekts in Indien erinnert mich an ein ausdauernd von mir bejammertes Problem, dass nämlich die Beteiligten von Fachleuten aus der Informatik und (manchen/vielen) Ingenieurswissenschaften unterdurchschnittlich ist. Die Artikel über Compiler und Programmiersprachen werden von denen geschrieben, die sie benutzen, nicht von denen die sie entwerfen und implemntieren (könnten). Die Artikel über Kraftfahrzeuge von denen, die sie fahren, nicht von denen die sie konstruieren (werden).

Gibt es ein Überblick über Fachrichtungen die bei bisherigen Initiativen erreicht worden. Natürlich wird jetzt viel über das Indien-spezifische des fehlgeschlagenen Projekts diskutiert, aber vielleicht ist es zum Teil fachgebietsspezifisch.

Einen Überblick über die momentan in den USA und Kanada laufenden Kurse findest Du unter en:Wikipedia:United States Education Program/Courses sowie unter en:Wikipedia:Canada Education Program/Courses.

Ein fachgebietsspezifisches Problem war in jedem Fall, dass z.B. die Studenten des College of Engineering Pune einen Themenbereich bearbeitet haben, der in der englischsprachigen Wikipedia bereits ordentlich ausgebaut war (Computer science). Dieser Bereich bietet zwar noch immer einiges an Verbesserungspotential, aber die Einstiegshürden sind auf jeden Fall größer, als in Bereichen, die noch nicht so weit ausgebaut sind. --Frank Schulenburg 14:55, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
