New "scientific refs" for Wikipedia [edit]
Greetings,
I wrote a new script for Wikipedia which replaces tags "ref". My script implements in the scientific (Harvard) style, but it is also compatible with tag "ref" and other markup.
Here are some examples of how my script is used:
[name] - is link, e.g. [Smith 2009] or [Smith 2009| p.121]
[*name] - is an anchor, e.g. [*Smith 2009]
For compatibility reasons, an editor should insert the template {{SciRefsOn}} somewhere in the page to turn the script on.
Additional details (description with screenshoots) can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:X-romix/SciRefs
Demo Wiki with working realisation - is here: http://ru.great.wikia.com/wiki/Zinc
I would like to help make Wikipedia more user-friendly. When using this script, backlinks may be accessed via the "Back" button in the browser or the backspace key on the keyboard. This backlink will be highlighted.
This reference style is simpler than the current convention, and it corresponds to the scientific standard (author-date Harvard referencing system).[1]
Jimbo Wales commented on my work the following way: I strongly support making refs easier to read and easier to use. You might want to pass this along to the usability team?--Jimbo Wales (talk) 22:32, 5 November 2009 (UTC) [2]

Gestion de l'access list de #wikipedia-fr [edit]
Salut guillom,

video usability (for media usability) [edit]
Wikipedia seems about 10 years behind the times in terms of use of video. Any crappy blogger can put video on his site, but it's basically impossible for me to put easily viewed video in an article. I'm not sure why our FORMAT for the files (as opposed to be the content) has to be in some variation that is hard for IE (and often Safari and Chrome) to display.
See here for an example in an article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Painted_turtle#Oregon_video
And I don't care about ME watching videos. I care about MY READERS. Want to use video as a normal device in articles for civilians who are often using IE as their browser (look at the usage stats). And I've even tried downloading the javascript and it did not help.
Why does our format have to be some clunky OGG, when even if in a proprietary format, the vidoes are still convertable (or we could host in both OGG and something normal). After all, when we convert videos to OGG, we take them out of a proprietary format, so it must be possible.
I just don't get the lack of concern for the READERS, to want this better display of video. Saying it's the readers faults or Microsoft's and expecting people to all use Firefox is just so wrong. We should present an experience that people can easily use with the most popular browsers.
(I would have added this in the feedback for multimedeia improvment but no place for me to do so. Feel free to transfer, though.)

CentralNotice changes [edit]
Hey Guillom, please note that CentralNotice has changed significantly in the past year and copying old banner code into new banners may cause problems, as was the case with nearly all of the last half dozen or so banners created in CentralNotice. Specifically, if you want to show banners only to anonymous or logged in users, you should now use the "Display to: [ ]Anonymous [ ]Logged in users" checkboxes. You no longer need to create separate "Anon" and "User" divs in the same banner. More info can be found at Help:CentralNotice. Let me know if you have any questions. Kaldari 00:09, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- BTW, I fixed the current banners, so don't worry about them :) Kaldari 01:26, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Kaldari. I used the checkbox for the last two banners I created. I copied a recent banner to create them (precisely for the reason you gave: CentralNotice has changed a lot), but I guess it included old code anyway. Thanks for fixing. guillom 07:58, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

Devenir volontaire OTRS [edit]
Bonjour Guillom,
Cordialement,

- Thanks for letting me know! And you're welcome :) guillom 15:20, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- One more other question: Do you perhaps know (or know a person who knows) where I can translate the names of the languages itself, for example here the names of the languages with German preferences are in German, as „Schweizer Hochdeutsch“ for Swiss High German, but only „German (formal address)“ isn't. So there are translations missing, but I don't know where. Don't find the template where this has been defined. --Geitost diskusjon 15:42, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hello Geitost. Unfortunately, I don't know, so I'm afraid I can't help you. I suggest you ask User:Nikerabbit or User:Siebrand, who might be able to help you with this. guillom 18:00, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- For cases like de-formal, we don't really have a solution yet, because those are not recognised as locales by CLDR. See translatewiki:CLDR. It's a bitch for now... Maybe the best thing is to open a bugzilla: report, so it doesn't only end up in the archives of Guillom's talk page. --Siebrand 19:27, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hello Geitost. Unfortunately, I don't know, so I'm afraid I can't help you. I suggest you ask User:Nikerabbit or User:Siebrand, who might be able to help you with this. guillom 18:00, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- I've got another question and I don't know where to ask it or who knows an answer: Do you know if it has been a good idea or not for me to post the text in Swiss High German also (Wikimedia maintenance notice/de-ch)? I don't know of any change between the German and the Swiss High German (or the Austrian German) for this text, so I didn't post the same text for Austrian German again. Austrian German is also in the translation extension in English, but has to be just the same as the German text. So do I have to post the German text again for de-at or is there any other possibility that the same text hasn't to be posted three times, if there just aren't any changes? Normally, in translatewiki, it would be the case for de-formal, de-ch and de-at that they fall back to German and get that text automatically. But here, it isn't to be done that way. So, what shall I do? Post it as de-ch now or not as de-at or anything else? It's quite boring to post the same texts three times for these other forms of German and to do the same with any translation in the translation extension, but if I don't, they still are there in English. Greetings --Geitost diskusjon 15:54, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- There again, I'm not sure. I've just started using the Translate extension, so I don't know how it handles fallback languages. Nikerabbit and Siebrand should be able to answer this question as well. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I'm not an expert regarding the extension (yet!). Thank you for your comments and your help with translations. guillom 18:00, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks and never mind. I'll try to ask Siebrand about it then who perhaps knows what to do with it. --Geitost diskusjon 18:31, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm, fallback behaviour isn't the easiest thing with this in MediaWiki. As far as I recall, "de-at" will fall back to "en" only for non-file based localisation (please test!). If this is indeed the case, it is because of a long standing open bug, that will most probably not be resolved because of performance issues. As you can see in that report, it's been reported quite a few times in the past years. --Siebrand 19:27, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Special maintenance pages [edit]
I have started two discussions, one at en.wikt.Beer_parlor and another at en.wikt.Grease_pit about which of the pages we need and how frequently. We have some questions about the resource-intensity of the various pages and whether the content of, say, "Wanted pages" could be limited to principal namespace pages wanted on other principal namespace pages (excluding, eg, wanted appendix pages and principal namespace pages wanted only on user pages.) How can we get answers or more general help? DCDuring (talk) 18:40, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
How and where to ask questions. [edit]
Hi Guillom,
We at the English Wiktionary are excited that we're about to receive the Scribunto extension, but we have a lot of uncertainties about it. Especially, we're really unsure about how to decide whether a given template should be ported to Scribunto. Do you know where (or of whom) we can ask these sorts of questions?
Thanks in advance!

Fundraising translation feedback [edit]
Hey Guillom,
I wanted to ask for your help. As you may be aware we have been running banners on many language wikis. We have a lot of new content this year and I really want to conduct a thorough review of our translations. This is a combination of feedback from the community, readers, donors as well as those with professional translator experience. This will help us ensure the highest quality of translations used in our messaging.
To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us feedback in french using This Link
Simply follow the simple instructions on that page and if you have any questions feel free to contact me on my talk page.
Many Thanks

WikipediaTimeline.svg [edit]
Hi. I'm wondering if there's a location that "WikipediaTimeline.svg" can be easily viewed online? The only method I can find, for viewing the image, is to download a local copy, by right-clicking "View raw", at https://github.com/gpaumier/wikipedia-infographic/blob/master/WikipediaTimeline.svg and then opening that file in my browser.
I'd be particularly interested in making a static png file, of the English output, similar to wm2012:File:Ten Years Of Wikipedia preview (fr).png, but I don't know anything about converting animated svg into png. Perhaps you could assist or advise? Thanks.
(Tangentially, I'm going to attempt some updates to the "Sources of information" section at Wikimedia history, and related pages, over the next few days. Hopefully this will help get that project rolling again. :) Quiddity (talk) 22:51, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, and thanks for the gentle nudge :) My original goal was to have an interactive version on my website, but that's been delayed. I'll generate a static SVG and PNG on github this week and I'll try to get into the habit of doing so whenever I edit the SVG. I'll upload them to Commons as well. Your edits to Wikimedia history and related pages are much welcome and appreciated! Not being alone in this is indeed very motivating :) guillom 09:02, 16 May 2013 (UTC)
