Translator, We need you![edit]

Dear Ijon,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

If you would be interested please take a look at this little sign-up survey and fill it out http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=13638&newtest=Y&lang=en. With that we can start building a list of people and filling any gaps in the languages we serve.

Many Thanks

Not to be too much of a pain in the butt, is it possible to get Grants:LauraHale/Amsterdam GLAMCamp ‎ looked at? Or at least a time frame for expecting a response? Airline ticket prices are likely to increase on me, and I'd like to have a better idea regarding my scheduling of things. I'd be trying to depart on November 30 and that keeps creeping closer. :) --LauraHale 20:35, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Laura. We have already scheduled a meeting to discuss your request. You can expect a decision within 24 hours. Ijon 20:46, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much. :) Having a better grasp of the timeline either way is useful. :) --LauraHale 20:53, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Ijon! As Laura put it, "Not to be too much of a pain in the butt," but I'm a bit worried that air tickets are getting more expensive if I and/or Rodrigo are to receive a grant to go to Rio. Prices are going up with each day and I have a feeling they might jump on Thursday (which would be one week before I expect to fly there). If this could be looked into soon, MensI'd appreciate it. I'll be updating the price from the cheapest airline available, so you can make the most realistic decision. Thanks! --Solstag 03:21, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Grants:R.T.Argenton/CulturaDigitalBR2011[edit]

Hi Asaf, We have a problem that the price of plane ticket increases exponentially, our request which was R$ 600 for the fare, today already have a gap of more than 200 reais. How can we proceed? Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 14:10, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Expect an answer soon. This takes a little time; You could have saved our movement some precious money by making this request sooner, I suppose, but we'll make a decision in the coming couple of days. Ijon 14:33, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion[edit]

Hi Asaf, it seems to me there is one part of the grants process that could easily be improved (especially on behalf of individuals that are not deeply embedded in Wikimedia processes to begin with). The grant review process can involve the need to process a great deal of information, without a lot of structure (especially if a lot of GAC members respond). I think it would be very helpful if the roles of the people responding were made very clear from the outset. As the ultimate decision-maker, you have the most important role, so perhaps you could simply lead by example. I would recommend making the following changes:

  • Adopt a username with the convention other staff have used: Asaf Bartov (WMF).
  • Change your signature to reflect your specific role within this process: "- Asaf Bartof (WMF Grants program officer)" (or something similar)
  • Change your user page to feature your WMF role more prominently than your past/volunteer/WMIL roles, and perhaps in a bit more detail.
  • Add a portrait to your user page.

Of course there are any number of variations on this, and you need not adopt all these measures to make an impact; but I suggest them all for your consideration. In the long run, I'd love to see GAC members do things along these lines as well (and also outline their various experience/region/expertise). But before proposing that, it would be nice to be able to point to your approach as a model. Hope this helps! -Pete F 21:11, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Pete! Thanks for these suggestions. I'm reluctant to burden myself with a separate account, but I did change my signature and revise my user page. Let me know what you think. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 19:21, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looks great! Glad to see that. -Pete F 04:01, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ha! I'm glad you also changed it :) For me the name "Ijon" was quite confusing. At least now prospective grantees will easily identify with you in this new title. Abbasjnr 15:17, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome![edit]

You are welcome!Just a quick one though. Can the translatewiki extension being used to translate meta pages be employed in a case where a user would like to translate, say from English to Swahili Wikipedia? It is doing a very good job by masking the Wikimark-up which most potential contributors in this part have cited from time to time as hard to learn. stephenWanjau Talk to Me. Email Me. 18:30, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Stephen. Unfortunately, no, the Translate extension is suitable for translating stable pages (like policy pages and program descriptions) on the same wiki (Meta, in most cases). It's not suitable for translating across wikis. I guess the best existing tools are things like the Google Translator Toolkit, or maybe that tool WikiBhasha? (I haven't tried it.) ZIM generation[edit]

Hi Asaf, Great meeting you yesterday and learning more about the offline wikipedia strategy, and the etymology of my name.

I know it wasn't the highest priority you listed, but I'm interested in helping fix ZIM generation. Do you know if this plan was ever acted on:

 http://www.kiwix.org/index.php/Mediawiki_DumpHTML_extension_improvement

If so, the road forward looks quite clear. Otherwise, my approach would be to simply plug a web spider into mwlib.zim ... The C library dependency is unfortunate, and will restrict wide use of the tool. Hopefully pure-php and pure-python implementations of OpenZIM will be written, one day. -Adam

Hi, Adam. I am not aware of that being worked on, but that doesn't mean much. I'd recommend engaging directly on that page's talk page. Kelson is Emmanuel, Kiwix's chief developer. It would be great to get an up-to-date status on that. Maybe fixing those DumpHTML bugs would indeed be a useful and easy starting point for improving dumping and ZIM creation flows.
