Problems ?

You don't get it. I have no problem whatsoever with porn. However, lots of people, including legislators, do have a problem with porn being freely accessible to minors. We are not doing this project any favours by having large collections of it on our servers without addressing that issue. --Jayen466 03:24, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

Clarification

Hi Jayen466, which "concerns Sue expressed" do you specifically mean? I just read what Sue wrote there; she seemed to like WereSpielCheqrs's proposal but wasn't sure as to how complex it would be to realize, technically. You mean that point? --Neitram 20:12, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

Global bans policy discussion

At Requests for comment/Global bans, where you have commented in support of Option 2, a third option has recently been implemented. The first two options did not prove a way for respondents to indicate that they oppose global bans entirely, i.e., that it is not possible to write a meaningful global bans policy that would attract their support. Option 3 is intended to provide that opportunity, and to aid in distinguishing between people who oppose the proposed policy because it requires improvements and those who oppose the proposed policy because no policy permitting global bans should be adopted.

Because the third section was added late by a respondent, it is possible that some people who responded early in the RFC have commented at option 2, but would really prefer to support option 3, or support both. If so, you may voluntarily choose to move your original comment or to or strikethrough your original comment and add new comments. Cambridge fresher's fair

Hello Andreas,

I've bid a stall on behalf of the Cambridge University Wikipedia Society at the Cambridge University fresher's fair, 2-3 October. If you are around, it would be great if you can come and help by staffing the stall for a few hours!

The fair will run, roughly, from 9am to 7pm on the 2nd, and 9am to 4pm on the 3rd; details are yet to be confirmed.[1] You certainly won't be expected to stay the whole day unless you really want to! It'll be a sign-up stall for the campus Wikipedia Society, and we'll give out Wikimedia freebies at the event to promote awareness for Wikipedia-editing and Wikimedia UK.

Superprotect letter update

Hi Jayen466,

Along with more hundreds of others, you recently signed Letter to Wikimedia Foundation: Superprotect and Media Viewer, which I wrote.

Today, we have 562 signatures here on Meta, and another 61 on change.org, for a total of 623 signatures. Volunteers have fully translated it into 16 languages, and begun other translations. This far exceeds my most optimistic hopes about how many might sign the letter -- I would have been pleased to gain 200 siguatures -- but new signatures continue to come.

I believe this is a significant moment for Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Very rarely have I seen large numbers of people from multiple language and project communities speak with a unified voice. As I understand it, we are unified in a desire for the Wikimedia Foundation to respect -- in actions, in addition to words -- the will of the community who has built the Wikimedia projects for the benefit of all humanity. I strongly believe it is possible to innovate and improve our software tools, together with the Wikimedia Foundation. But substantial changes are necessary in order for us to work together smoothly and productively. I believe this letter identifies important actions that will strongly support those changes.

Have you been discussing these issues in your local community? If so, I think we would all appreciate an update (on the letter's talk page) about how those discussions have gone, and what people are saying. If not, please be bold and start a discussoin on your Village Pump, or in any other venue your project uses -- and then leave a summary of what kind of response you get on the letter's talk page.

Finally, what do you think is the right time, and the right way, to deliver this letter? We could set a date, or establish a threshold of signatures. I have some ideas, but am open to suggestions.

Participate in the Inspire Campaign and help address harassment!

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. WMF-Jahresplanung 2022-2023

Hallo Andreas, Ende April finden die ersten Gespräche zur Jahresplanung der Wikimedia Foundation statt. Ich habe im Kurier in der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia gelesen, dass du dir eine weniger bürokratische Wikimedia Foundation wünschst. Das ist etwas was ich unterstütze. Ich bin der Meinung, dass die Wikimedia Foundation in den letzten Jahren was deren Mitarbeiterzahl und Vermögen betrifft, stark gewachsen ist und dass die Unterstützung nicht in gleicher Weise zugenommen hat, wie die verfügbaren Ressourcen. Hast du Interesse deine Ansichten, wie du dir die Wikimedia Foundation vom Aufbau her vorstellst aufzuschreiben. Vielleicht ist es ja möglich gemeinsam mit anderen konkrete Vorschläge zu erarbeiten, wie die Wikimedia Foundation umgestaltet werden kannn.--Hogü-456 (talk) 17:24, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

@Hogü-456: Ich glaube, kein/e Bürokrat/in, die ein Jahresgehalt zwischen 200.000 und 500.000 Dollar bezieht, wird jemals dafür stimmen, dass die WMF wieder weniger bürokratisch werden sollte. ;) Meine Erfahrung ist, dass die WMF das Steuerruder nur dann in eine andere Richtung legt, wenn Missstände publik werden. (Die Änderung der Terms of Use zum Beispiel folgte auf diesen Artikel.) Solange keine öffentliche Diskussion stattfindet, die die Kluft zwischen PR-Image und Realität aufdeckt, macht die WMF business as usual. Die Möglichkeit einer internen Einflussnahme wird sich immer nur auf relativ belanglose Details beschränken. Gruß, Andreas JN466 13:00, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
