zh-hant translation for Brandon Harris's Appeal[edit]

I would like to inquire about the process by which translations for fundraiser appeal messages are updated. Fundraising_2011/Brandon_Letter/zh-hant has been at 'Ready' for a few days. The problem is that after I marked it as such, there have been subsequent changes. This wouldn't be a bad thing, except a couple edits inadvertently introduced Simplified Chinese characters (probably due to incomplete machine conversions by editors who primarily use Simplified Chinese), and one of them replaced what we had with a machine translation of the English version straight off Google Translate. I'm concerned that an update would occur when a less-than-ideal version is active--is there some way to make sure this doesn't happen? Thanks. Wctaiwan 03:38, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just a heads up that it seems like the translation was updated with a version that looks OK to me, so this is no longer an issue for now. Thanks. Wctaiwan 05:05, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

hr ready[edit]

I know that you are checking for yourself, anyway letters are ready. A bit later than I thought, but better now than never :) SpeedyGonsales 18:18, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome! Thanks. I'll move them over later tonight. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 18:21, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why in English[edit]

I just noticed that Kaldari Letter in FA:WP is in English while it has been translated into Persian and has been published by yourself. I wonder why we translate these letters when you can't trust us? Why do we translate these pages when you finally publish the English version? Three or four months ago I wasted my time to translate "Image filter referendum" and all of its subpages into Persian but the voting interface remained in English in spite of the fact that I asked one of the admins to publish them in Persian. Americophile 19:50, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Hmm, I don't know why that's happening, it should be in Persian... Which country are you in? If you're in a country that has a chapter then the chapter may not have picked up the translations. Let me know, and I'll see what I can do. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 20:12, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I live in Tehran, Iran that has no Wikimedia chapters. This page is shown for me. Thanks Americophile 21:11, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's reeeaally weird, because the links to and banners for that campaign are only be shown in Germany. I don't really know what I can do about that... :-/ Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 01:57, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jon Harald,

I updated the status of User:Jsoby/Test to "discouraged". It will no longer show up in Special:LanguageStats now. We should also have workflow states within an hour or so. See Special:LanguageStats and Special:MessageGroupStats. --Siebrand 19:25, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yay, that's awesome! Thanks for fixing the page – it was just a test to see how it worked. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 19:30, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fundraising and Funds Dissemination/Recommendations/de[edit]

moin Jon, can you please shut down the translation-script for Fundraising and Funds Dissemination/Recommendations/de or give me permission (whatever that might ) for regular editing the page? i already drafted a german translation & the text has already been reviewed but the script is hell (at least, if you re working on a netbook while travaling ;o)). thx & all best, --Jan eissfeldt 19:31, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Workflow states[edit]

Hi Jon! I've been trying to translate workflow states using Special:Translate but it seems that I dont't have rights to do it. Perhaps you could change page protection level, so that translators would be able to translate these messages? Regards, --Mikołka 11:35, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry about the late response!
These messages are in the MediaWiki namespace, which means that you must have sysop access to edit them (and consequently add translations), and there is no way to remove the protection. We should try to find a solution for how to do that, but in the meantime you can post the translations here and I'll copypaste them over. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 23:40, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I haven't noticed it's in MediaWiki ns. In that case would, please, do that, starting from the top: W tłumaczeniu, Wymaga aktualizacji, Aktualizacja, Oczekuje na przejrzenie, Gotowe, Opublikowane. Thanks, --Mikołka 00:20, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for adding the translations, Jon Harald. The 1st one for Polish has a leading space that shouldn't be there. --Siebrand 11:53, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that's right. Thanks! Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 12:00, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Survey: Translatewiki vs. translatewiki.net[edit]

Hey Jon Harald. I saw in the survey that "Translatewiki" was used. Can you please use "translatewiki.net" there? Siebrand 14:47, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'm changing it now. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 14:52, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

And can you please use "Persian" instead of "Farsi". "Farsi" is the local name of Persian language. Thanks in advance. AMERICOPHILE 15:15, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I was not sure what to use there, because I see both Persian and Farsi all the time (even in Norwegian we switch between "persisk" and "farsi"), but you are probably right that "Persian" is used more often in English. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 15:28, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. You may find this helpful about Persian language name. AMERICOPHILE 15:40, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
ps: And maybe this one. AMERICOPHILE 15:41, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that's useful. A very good argument, indeed. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 15:43, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This barnstar is given to you for your help with the 2011 fundraiser translation.

Hi! I just want to thank you and give you this barnstar for your help with the translation of the 2011 fundraiser! The fundraiser was the best we ever had, both in terms of the amount we collected and in terms of number of translations. We couldn't have done either one without the help we got from you.

Again, thanks for your help with translations – you're awesome! --Siebrand 14:50, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

lese korrektur[edit]

Hei Jon Harald, vil du være så snill å lese teksten Survey of how money should be spent/Questions/no korrektur? Det ville være hyggelig. Det er ikke mitt morsmål og jeg tok den danske teksten som hjelp for det. Dessuten vet du jo bedre enn meg hva bestemte setninger og begrep mener. :-) Mange takk og hilser fra tyskland --Geitost diskusjon 23:09, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jeg er heller ikke sikker i bruk av komma. Kan du også ta en titt på Translations:Survey of how money should be spent/Questions/1/no i forbindelse med Translations:Survey of how money should be spent/Questions/1/da? Jeg forstod "(noe kan kreve finansielle midler)" at "noe" henviser til "ressurser" [på engelsk: "which resources Wikimedians want and need (some may require funding)" – henviser "some" til "resources" eller "Wikimedians" eller "ønsker og behov"/"the wishes and needs of Wikimedians"] fordi på dansk ble det oversatt som "(nogle ønsker og behov kan kræve midler)". Jeg er forvirret nå. --Geitost diskusjon 23:51, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hei igjen, hvis du kanskje ser på den norske oversettelsen, kan du da også ta en titt på den nynorske versjonen, fordi jeg kan det ikke veldig godt og bruker stadig ordboka osv. for det (og bare håper at jeg ikke satt for mange feil i det). ;-) Mange hilser --Geitost diskusjon 00:50, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Survey of how money should be spent in Russian[edit]

Hi Jon. I came to say you that you'll receive very strange results from Russians because the text of 2 last questions is duplicated (questions; I know that options should be duplicated). If you can, please, fix this problem. Thank you in advance, Lvova (talk) 19:13, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fundraiser translation: font issue[edit]

Hi Jon. Persian version of fundraiser is not using the same font as that used in the original translation. Can you please fix that? Huji (talk) 15:41, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Did I do this correctly?[edit]

Hey, I added a request by clicking "place request" on Requests for translations and filling in the template, but I'm not sure if I did it correctly. Let me know if there's any fixes to make etc. Thanks! Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 22:25, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Steven, just to confirm you want just the Request for comment/Global bans#Why we're having this discussion section to be translated? That can be done, I imagine it might be easier to put just that text on a separate page and then allow it to be translated, then copy the translations over to the main page, Request for comment/Global bans after the translations are done. That's my proposed way of doing it - let's see what Jon thinks. :-) The Helpful One 22:56, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In addition to the intro, we need to the description of the two options (Yes, implement and Not yet) translated. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 22:12, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you did it correctly, but I had forgot to change the target page when I moved the request a new translation page out of my userspace, so it didn't appear in the right place. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) (talk) 17:15, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Jon! Seeing the translations rolling in now. :) Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 21:50, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I'm hoping we can get German, Portuguese, Italian, Chinese and Japanese done for Request for comment/Global bans. After that it can be closed. Do you think we can poke the translators for those languages? Thanks a million, Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 18:56, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, will do. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) (talk) 00:13, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, everything key is finished except Polish and Portuguese. I really want to start this before Wikimania, so if we can get a pl translation finished, I might just start this week. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 18:17, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fundraiser translation: update Vietnamese page[edit]

Hi Jsoby, can you update last version of donate:Template:2011FR/Appeal-default/text/vi from source page: Fundraising 2011/Jimmy Letter 002/vi? Thank you very much. --minhhuy (talk) 09:56, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

!!FUZZY!! ????[edit]

I received a message about a new translation and got to wrok right away, ironic since i`m AT work, and got to a pretty cool interface helping me translate each section of the text but every section began with the fuzzy thing, i honestly thought it was vandalism, but was`t sure, and the page being translated was in a pink shade, and dissapeared when done but someone else translated the second section before me and that section remained in the shade, i saw the code and the fuzzy thing was in there too, so the simple question is, should i remove the fuzzy thingy?

I`m not sure if you are the person i should be asking to, but i know no one else in the translation section. Zidane tribal (talk) 18:04, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The "!!FUZZY!!" message means that the original was changed, so that the translations need to be updated. This is the way it has been done on Translatewiki for ages, where the Translate extension originated, but you are right that it's not obvious what it is – we could probably think of another way to do it that makes it clear what it means.
But the answer to your question is, yes, you should remove it if you have updated the translation so that it is correct. Once you do that, the pink shading will disappear. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) (talk) 13:11, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Zidane tribal (talk) 17:00, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

TranslatorSignup[edit]

Hi Jsoby, I saw the TranslatorSignup CentralNotice banner, however the English version is in fact in Catalan, and it's running on different project (say zh) without a local translation ... not even English. Hope it can get fixed soon? and is there a place to put translation? Regards. Bencmq (talk) 09:06, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ack, that was my bad, I copypasted the translation to the wrong place. :-( It's fixed now, thanks for the notice! Jon Harald Søby (WMF) (talk) 15:52, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, please join the discussion here or notify the reviving of the transcom here (I don't see any other place on wiki, where did you write it?). Thanks, Nemo 16:14, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jon, your bot went rogue and posted the message twice on everyone's talk page. Deryck C. 13:49, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, here as well – we're looking into it. It might have been because I was on a sketchy connection when I sent it, and that may have influenced it somehow. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) (talk) 16:39, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense to me. On a sketchy connection it is not unusual for the server to successfully receive a command, but the acknowledgement was lost on its way back to the client. So the server executed the command but the client thought the command was lost in transmission, and orders the command again. (For the same reason all online shopping websites have "don't press refresh" written in big font.) Deryck C. 11:50, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Translation notification[edit]

I guess a high-priority task (a meta-Meta task?) for me is to translate the notification message itself. Where do I find it? --Redaktor (talk) 13:56, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed! ^_^ The extension, along with the messages, can be translated here: [3] Jon Harald Søby (WMF) (talk) 16:42, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And what is with the workflow states? I can't translate them because I wouldn't have the permission as they are interface text. The only exception is (unset) because it has been included in the Translation Notifications extension. But the other states (in progress, proofread, ready, etc.) are not translatable. Regards, --Michawiki (talk) 17:12, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is a known problem. Since they are in the MediaWiki namespace you need to be an admin to change them, which is unfortunate in this particular case. I will ask the i18n team if they have come up with a solution to it – in the meantime, you can post the translations here and I will add them myself. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) (talk) 17:30, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't very bad. The main thing is that the states work. It's strange only that I as normal translator can set the state but I'm not allowed to translate some words. I think I don't need to post any translations, I translate by Meta translation tool, choose the state and all works. --Michawiki (talk) 17:48, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Note: This time, the "Wikimedia Foundation highlights" section does not include the usual coverage of the most notable work of Foundation staff during that month. Instead, it contains a list of talks given by Foundation staff at Wikimania, summarizing their most important work the year over. It looks like a lot of text, but only the talk titles will need to be translated. The intention is that these titles alone can already give readers a good overview of what the Foundation is working on in general.

This letter is a new translation request, but re-uses large parts of the 2011 Jimmy Appeal, with slight modifications in the second version.

If the 2011 Jimmy Letter has been translated into your language, you can probably re-use much of it for this translation. :-)

Takk!

Change settings in sw-wikipedia[edit]

Hi Jon, I am a bureaucrat on sw-wikipedia. We just took a vote to have the settings changed for editing. We want to block unregistered users from starting new entreis and to edit. We wanted to do this some years ago but then were told it is not allowed. By now we see that the policy has changed on a number of wikis. So we want to change it but do not know how to do it. So I ask you to help us with that change or to refer us to whosoever can do this. Can you please help us? Please respond to my page at http://sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majadiliano_ya_mtumiaji:Kipala Kipala (talk) 17:56, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fundraising translation feedback[edit]

Hey Jsoby,

I wanted to ask for your help. As you may be aware we have been running banners on many language wikis. We have a lot of new content this year and I really want to conduct a thorough review of our translations. This is a combination of feedback from the community, readers, donors as well as those with professional translator experience. This will help us ensure the highest quality of translations used in our messaging.

To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us feedback for norwegian bokmal using This Link

Simply follow the simple instructions on that page and if you have any questions feel free to contact me on my talk page.

Many Thanks

Help test better mass message delivery[edit]

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:24, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Beginning of MassMessage, end of EdwardsBot[edit]

Hi. You're being contacted as you're listed as an EdwardsBot user.

MassMessage has been deployed to all Wikimedia wikis. For help using the new tool, please check out its help page or drop a note on Meta-Wiki.

With over 400,000 edits to Wikimedia wikis, EdwardsBot has served us well; however EdwardsBot will no longer perform local or global message delivery after December 31, 2013.

A huge thanks to Legoktm, Reedy, Aaron Schulz and everyone else who helped to get MassMessage deployed. --MZMcBride (talk) 02:36, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

--Event (talk) 10:35, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Need your help in this issue[edit]

Dear Jsoby I am writing to you regarding an issue in Pashto wiki here. The User:UsmanKhan is constantly reverting my text without any will of discussion on this matter when i make the article back to its original form, then he puts the deletion template in it and is continuously vandalizing my writing. Please either give him a warning not to do that, or block him from editing.--Khangul (talk) 17:04, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is a serious issue and this guy UsmanKhan who is a 16-17 years old is destroying everything. Your urgent help is needed in this regard. --Khangul (talk) 17:56, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
