Dear Masti,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

Confirmation discussions

I only could do a theoretical lesson with some slides, but not to help students to do the registration step, even if I had a user creator flag. Blocking 2A01:4F8:0:0:0:0:0:0/32

Hello,

blocking a major network block like this with a "Open proxy" is not really a valid way to go. This is a block of a major part of Hetzner 2a01:4f8::/29 - Please either restrict your blocks to individual servers (i.e. /64) or instead use Hetzners abuse reports when justified.

This block also kills perfectly legal access of non-server users. E.g. since Sixxs.net is gone using a Hetzner server for IP4to6 is a normal and easy way to use IPv6 in the still many IPv4 only networks.

The Hetzner network range is in no way an "Open proxy", so please fix this wrong network block!

On May 9 2017, you blocked 2a03:2880::/32 6 months with the comment "Open proxy" (here). I have never known whether your block was the consequence of a request that I had made on May 5 (here).
On November 10 2017, as soon as the block was finished, users in this IP range continue to attack Wikipedia and Wikidata. For instance, you can see these contributions on the articles CNN xxx on the French Wikipedia. Nothing occurs on the English Wikipedia because they still have a local block for sockpuppetery (here).
Do you still think that it is an open proxy? If this is the case, could you reapply the block?

Rename an account can only be done by bureaucrats+ and therefore is a special request page. I believe only owners of accounts can ask to rename their name(s). It would be absurd to allow this to others. If usernames are really inappropriate they can be blocked, removed etc. Suppose I ask a steward to rename 1Veertje to Vera you would not be amused. Anyone can add those templates to the talk page of any article, and organizers will check if those articles are following the rules of the contest after the end of the contest. And we can't see that until the end of the contest. In that case, that statistics page will give wrong information. @Rapsar: that's strictly based on how you handle such cases. On ro.wp, we keep the templates and do our own calculations for points. You can simply remove the template or replace the template with another one marking that the article does not meet the minimum requirements. You blocked a range in 2017.[3] Can you repeat the block again?

On English Wikipedia we blocked that range today, and also these two:

The vandal I am trying to stop is a person who changes dates in music articles. (See en:Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/Date-changing vandal from Poland.) User:Cynko is helping to stop this vandal. Global block of User:Toolhub

I was wondering if you could help me understand why you blocked User:Toolhub as a "(Spam-only account: spambot)" account? I created this account to be used as part of the Toolhub project. GIPBE

Cześć. Piszę w sprawie, która trwa ponad 2 miesiące, a która nie jest jeszcze zakończona.

Chodzi o to, że na co dzień korzystam z VPN dla swojego bezpieczeństwa, do tego potrzebne mi jest GIPBE (Global IP Ban Exempt); jego brak utrudnia mi działanie na Wikipedii. Na Meta Wikimedii pisałem o tym już pod koniec kwietnia, jednak Amanda napisała, bym wysłał e-maila. Zresztą, Ciebie też oznaczyłem (jako polskojęzycznego stewarda), jednak, nie wiedzieć czemu, nie zareagowałeś.

Jak powiedziała, tak zrobiłem; dostałem odpowiedź zwrotną, żebym... napisał to na Meta Wikimedii. Mimo to, wciąż nalegałem, argumentując, że GIPBE jest mi potrzebnę, gdyż używam VPN dla swojego bezpieczeństwa. W końcu dostałem odmowę, ponieważ "używanie proxy jest niezgodne z zasadami Wikipedii". Jednakże VPN a proxy to nie jest jedno i to samo. Mogę powiedzieć, że używam sieci VPN, gdyż aktualnie jestem na terenie Chińskiej Republiki Ludowej, będę tam jeszcze co najmniej kilka lat. O to chodzi, że używam VPN dla swojego bezpieczeńśtwa.

Wracając, nie zgodziłem się z odmową. W końcu około tydzień temu dostałem kolejną odpowiedź, że "ponieważ wielu wolontariuszy odrzuciło moją prośbę, oczekuje ona teraz na sprawdzenie przez innego wolontariusza". Nie jest to zgodne z prawdą, gdyż moją prośbę odrzucono tylko jeden raz, pomimo, jak wspomniałem, poważnej sytuacji. Odpowiedzi oczywiście dalej nie dostałem, dlatego teraz kieruję tę prośbę bezpośrednio do Ciebie.

dewiki checkuser @Squasher confirmed this was indeed not Avoided [4]. The same applies in my opinion to this request [5] (@Jon Kolbert fyi). Locking TheRandomIP sockpuppets is not wrong in my opinion as he sometimes turns to crosswiki abuse (and its certainly long term abuse as claimed e.g. in this request [6]). But if his sockpuppets are falsely reported as Avoided and locked without further comment it looks a bit like no actual check has been done to confirm the requestors claim. "not every request on SRG will result in a check" – I believe this was referring to "verification" in general, not CheckUser action. That said, if a steward is unfamiliar (or not familiar enough) with an abuser to verify the request without a "check" in the CU sense – and would still like to handle the reportTemplate:NbspTemplate:Ndash, they should IMO at least perform one – not rely on "similar attributes to another sockmaster" that are arguably not even present (at least to anybody with sufficient experience in dealing with this vandal). And if it turns out that it is in fact a different a different person, it would help prevent future confusion – both from stewards and reporters – to leave a note explaining this (this applies to both actioned and non-actioned reports, though in the latter case it seems to be more commonplace to do so already).
As for this case in particular, I don't have a definite opinion whether the locks are warranted, but I believe whatever the decision would be should at least be implemented consistently (see the other socks listed at the dewiki CU investigation, and in particular the sockmaster), and most importantly, I would like to hear back from Masti on this topic. ~~~~

It has been another ten days, and your logs and contributions tell that you have been reasonably around in that timeframe. I don't know if you need another reminder, but I just want to say that I do not consider it responsible behaviour to perform dozens of further steward actions while leaving concerns regarding previous ones (voiced by at least two users) unanswered for multiple weeks. ~~~~

If You think it should not be locked you could just ask for that. With tons of locks it could happen that something happens. Everybody makes mistakes. but in a situation we have an abuser which only work on 1 wiki locking hime on all does not change the situation. The problem I was trying to solve was steward accountability. Is "The account looked like LTA" (a rather subjective statement, particularly without an article/without relating the account to anybody in particular) sufficient reason for you to perform locks, or in particular do so on request by any user on SRG (without investigating yourself)? Does your question "Do You think that an LTA will be a good editor on other sites?" imply that it is okay that stewards lock anybody matching their definition of "LTA", a loosely-defined term that you evidently seem to apply to users without even identifying them? How does that leave any transparency in on what basis steward actions may be peformed? (And to answer your question, there are users – whether they should be considered "LTAs" is up to your interpretation – that have been abusing sockpuppets on certain wikis while being productive on different ones; whether that applies in this case is irrelevant if your lock was based on that general principle rather than any investigation of the specific situation (and otherwise I'm not sure why you would be asking the question in the first place).) "If You think it should not be locked you could just ask for that." – this is secondary though it was implied, but all right, maybe if I just ask directly next time it won't take taking this to steward confirmations to get a reply from you. ~~~~
