Bambifan

Hi, Mike.
Few minutes ago an user from the IP hr:Special:Contributions/68.220.179.246 was editing the same articles as user Completly unconstructive user.
Yesterday there was an user that edited the same articles as hr:Special:Contributions/Completly unconstructive user.
See hr:Special:Contributions/Bambi.
See the history of edits on [1]. Bambi wasn't disruptive, but it's obvious that he edits hr.wiki using online translation tools; articles are full of grammar errors.
As I'm writing this text, similar IP began editing those articles hr:Special:Contributions/68.220.183.212. Obviously uses online translation tools. I suspect that this is Bambifan. Kubura 02:02, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

I think I got these right before seeing your message.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 02:54, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

my ip is blocked

Hi, I can't make any change in wiki because they said that my ip is block and I must ask you to deblock its. So, please could you do this ? Thank, Paul Hilbert

I'm sorry, that IP is responsible for lots of vandalism on many of our wikis. You can log in with an account to bypass the block. To create a new account, you will need to use an unblocked IP (in all likelihood, using a computer in a different location will be sufficient). My apologies for the inconvenience this causes you, but this limits the damage that can be done to our projects.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:51, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm not an administrator on the English Wikipedia. You should ask one of them.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:47, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

patachonf

This user appears both under the normal section and the disqualified section. Do you know which one is correct? -- Soap 00:47, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Looks OK to me... where does this need to be fixed?  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:59, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
On this page, where there are blue boxes for disqualified users and white boxes for normal ones, patachonf is in both sections. While he's running 0% support last I checked, I think it's still unfair to potentially confuse people by classifying him as ineligible. -- Soap 01:06, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
OK, I didn't realize it was for being a candidate. Still, he's eligible for the basic criteria (such as they are), and has identified to the Foundation. So, I've removed the disqualified entry. Thanks for taking note of that!  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:13, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

My mouse...

... went crazy. Missclicked on RC, sorry. Fixed now. Also, please do note that AF seems not to be working. Regards, — Dferg (talk) 13:18, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

No problem on part one - it happens.
For part two: the abuse filter only applies to the vote and confirm pages right now. I'm not sure I see a need to change that...  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 13:36, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Dianey vandal on ms.wikipedia.org?

I cant read Malay, so I cant make much of what's going on here, but someone on IRC posted me a link to this and said that it was probably Bambifan101, aka the Disney vandal. Since your name is in the Recent Changes, I thought maybe you'd be able to either block him or do whatever else needs to be done (or is he blocked already and it just doesnt show in the contribs page?) -- Soap 21:45, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

I think it was taken care of. Thanks for letting me know.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:57, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Deletion request

I request you to delete my user page [2] and [3] with the whole story, because I do not want a user page files should private information. Thank you immediately. --Žiedas 17:10, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Could you point out which revisions have information that should be made to disappear? I don't think I can remove the whole history - but I can remove certain revisions if needed. Thanks  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 17:34, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Block???

Okay I'm not brilliant here, but thought I was getting somewhere - Why the block??? 195.229.237.38 17:02, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure I know what you're talking about. What block? Where?  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 03:53, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

"You are currently unable to edit pages on Wikipedia. You can still read pages, but cannot edit, change, or create them. My apologies, it may be difficult with some of us: "topic experts" but not "IT experts", so again very sorry if I am being again stupid here. All seems to be fine now, but I was very concerned for a bit that I had done something wrong. Cool place, trying to learn.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 195.229.237.41 (talk) 16:04, 23 February 2010

That IP is not blocked, and that one isn't either. I just need to know the IP you're talking about - otherwise I cannot check anything, nor unblock it. Thanks.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:29, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Thank you

I would like to thank you for your hard work and dedication to the project. During this month, you have dealt with vandalism of all types and were valuable in protecting smaller wikis in addition to your work at permissions, steward requests/Bot status, and other important Steward tasks. You have made yourself regularly available and have shown that you are an important asset as a Steward. As such, I would like to thank you for all of his hard work. You have been entered as the Steward of February 2010 in my new Steward Recognition Project for your invaluable work. Thank you. Ottava Rima 02:23, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the recognition :)  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 04:51, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Let's put aside the past.

Yes, I am Pickbothmanlol.

Specifically, I am one of many people who have chronically trolled numerous wikis, notably the English version of Wikipedia. Recently, Wikimedia globally blocked this IP, and thus, I have decided to repent for my past colourful actions for good by any means possible.

This whole mess started as a joke for a Newgrounds topic. One of our members was bickering about homebrew still being supported on the PSP using official firmware, and I decided to link him to a article. Normally, that was all I was going to do until I had an idea pop in my head about making a joke that pointed to an moderator on Newgrounds.

After the first account was banned (I think it was A1a2s but I haven't checked the history.), the vandalism became a bad habit. I would troll, or attempt to vandalize pages just to get a frantic reaction from Wikipedians. Eventually, it became a daily routune at the start of 2009.

I'm done for good, and will never again vandalize Wikipedia. I realized what my vandalism was taking away from others. If someone had vandalized the pages I needed, I would have likely failed out of High School. I hope to eventually contribute to this shared knowledge for the benefit of more than just my warped humour.

I don't expect you to believe me and infact I mostly expect you to start calling me a troll and reverting for the lulz, but at least I can rest easy knowing that I've moved beyond this childish behavior. I want my account unlocked and for all of this to be put aside. 68.221.207.33 02:59, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

To appeal the lock on your account, please ask on SRG. However, you're right - I would immediately decline any such request, and I rather think other stewards would do the same.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 04:52, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Not suprising in the least. 68.221.207.33 14:07, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
You could convince people that you turned a new leaf with 3 months straight of quality work - good content additions, reverting vandalism, etc. You have a long history of problems you have to make up for after all. Ottava Rima 15:09, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
That would require the global rangeblock to be deactivated before I could try to do what you have proposed. 68.221.207.33 15:25, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
As I said on my talk page, you are clearly able to edit right now. Go patrol. Refresh that page every 30 minutes. You see vandalism, revert it. You find a page that doesn't belong, tag it. Do the mindless busy work. There are many discussions that you could add an opinion to. Go be a decent person for a few months and contribute. Ottava Rima 17:31, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

By the way, for anyone reading - compare the Pickbothmanlol's statements with "Willy on Wheels" statements from here (dated October 30, 2005). Willy on Wheels comments are removed where they were not duplicated by Pickbothmanlol.

As you can see, Pickbothmanlol is a plagiarist in addition to being a mass vandal. Thank you PeterSymonds for providing the link to the Willy on Wheels statement. Ottava Rima 17:44, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

PeterSymonds should not have done that. Bambimanlol101 19:33, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Not trying to buy in on a battle. To PBL, one has to earn trust, and you have managed to put yourself in a Global Trust Crisis with all Trust authorities. Can I suggest that you need to try to get away from wikis, for quite a number of months. I understand that it will be hard, however you have to be able to demonstrate a level of control and start your rehabilitation of the trust.

It is not about Mike, it is not about stewards, it is not about administrators, rather it is all the communities to which you have undertaken egregious and malicious attacks on their edits, their time, their efforts, their research. So this is not a case of saying sorry, though if it is heartfelt, then that is a good start, it is about understanding that you destroyed the communities' trust. So, until there is a clear understanding, and presumably some penance, you have zero hope of an open return, so personally, I can only see that a return can only come from abstinence and extended good behaviour; then some might entertain thoughts of your return. billinghurst sDrewth 10:24, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

"UNDONE" or "REVERT"

Mike, Last night trying to improve the quality of Liga 1 Romania pages I was updating the external links, you undid those.

While trying to get the ropes of Wikipedia, i read your profile page and it says (something like) "If you don't agree with the edit then revert". says so here (and is the first thing i read after seeing you had undone the improvements i was making) Mike's Profile Page.

What really threw me though was that it says: "If you'd rather talk about it, please do so on Meta." That is really unfair on a new guy! I took one look at meta and thought....yes, you can imagine!

Anyhow, so now some other editor has gone and blocked the good site (as in listed it on white? Or Black list page somewhere) i was trying to add! Why do you say: revert your edit?

What more can I do! I have found this Wikipedia experience very upsetting. Not sure there is much point to trying to contribute....

You found WM:SPAM, which is exactly what you're looking for, and Beetstra seems to be helping you. I leave it to him  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 17:17, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks Mike. has been a steap learning curve! Galesbury 20:37, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Mike, what should be done about the domain which you added to the meta list. Dirk has gone off somewhere, and the note I put up there is stagnent?

I am asking you as you were one whose page initially confused me, and thus led to the poor souls having a spam blocked site. Galesbury 00:13, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

If Beetstra's not paying attention to that, I'll take a look...  — mikelifeguard@meta:~$  00:26, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

FYI, I nominated the template created by you for deletion, see Meta:Requests for deletion. --The Evil IP address 15:20, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

Screencasting

Hey Mike, I tried out CamStudio (in emulation, no less!) It's not bad. It's unfortunate that it doesn't output directly to OGG. The video it produced was fine in AVI, but my various attempts to convert it using ffmpeg2theora were disappointing (Could not get audio to sync properly, even using the --sync flag).

Worth a little more experimentation, but I'm not convinced it's a terribly useful tool for us. But I'm really glad you pointed it out!

I just remembered the personnel question -- I'll get back to you on that shortly... -Pete Forsyth (WMF) 22:55, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

I think I uploaded the avi to archive.org and let their servers handle it (they can also take much larger uploads than WMF can :() - then took the ogg they made and uploaded that to Commons. But there should be a way to make ffmpeg2theora do it right - might be worth grabbing Gmaxwell (who is a pro) for help...  — mikelifeguard@meta:~$  23:09, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Estonian blocklist

Hi. Of course, your know, that there is a kind of vandalism, which consists in creating very long obscene usernames. They are blocked indefinitely, but they remain in blocklict, for example, this one in Estonian Wikipedia. Are you able to remove, rename or whatever these long English-language usernames (and also these blocked on 8th and 24th of February)? The usernames, of course, must stay blocked forever. Taivo Taivo 16:41, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Yes of course. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I'm doing it now.  — mikelifeguard@meta:~$  20:14, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Spam

Hi Mike,

I know I was sick and have been inactive for almost 4 months but what happend with the spam black list?

I have cleaned the complete list today 154 request this morning when I checked it, there are no bot request waiting anymore, but it was one day hard work :(

I can still remember that four months ago we had like 10 requests at a max, and it was empty every day, did everybody stop working on the list?

Best regards, Huib talk 22:48, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, that's pretty much what happened. Not really sure what we can do about it - and I'm one of the people who's been ignoring the backlog. Thanks a ton for your work today, it needed to get done.  — mikelifeguard@meta:~$  23:08, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Global sysops in ru.wikiversity

At us about access closing global admin discussion is spent to our project. [4]

According to a new rule "Projects may opt-in or opt-out at their own discretion if they obtain local consensus. Simply inform any steward of the community's decision." Global sysops

I ruwikiversity do not find in the list Global sysops/wiki set. Whether means it that we in vain spend such discussion?

In any case consider a current consensus of our community which at present says that we consult well and without global admin. SergeyJ 11:38, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Done - I've opted you out.  — mikelifeguard@meta:~$  16:55, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

On the talk page you stated you wanted to import this to Wikibooks. Did you decide against it? -- Adrignola 01:55, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

No, I just got distracted by other things. I also didn't realize at the time that there are quite a few translations. If we import it to wikibooks, we should coordinate with other language editions to make sure they get the translated pages.  — mikelifeguard@meta:~$  14:08, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Spam js

Hi Mike. I want to use the spam js functions on enWP but the "filter" function does not seem to work. My js-fu is weak these days, obviously. Could you advise please? Thanks, JzG 17:31, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

All that does is filter out non-mainspace pages from the search results. You can use Splarka's lifilter for more sophisticated filtering. Or do you mean it really doesn't work at all?  — mikelifeguard@meta:~$  22:59, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
