Problem with translations[edit]

I refer to you because this hapend (few other messages affected to) so i was hoping that you can fix it some how since Siebrand‎ is not very active on translatewiki. I posted thred on translatewiki few months ago but it didnt deleted pages and messages in sr code where deployed few days ago. I know now that i made mistake for putting redirect in pages but this was avoidable just by deleting pages at least the ones that were not made by FuzzyBot. Limit local uploads in Wuu wikipedia[edit]

Hello! I have added wuuwiki to User:Nemo bis/Unused local uploads. Altho wuuwiki has 300+ files, most of them are not in fair use and can be deleted (if without any copyright info) or moved to Commons. New users often upload pictures locally. Babel fatto[edit]

Combinazione abbastanza rara.--Alexmar983 (talk) 16:54, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Using only UploadWizard for uploads[edit]

Hi, I'm writing here only to let you known that I've made a reply to your mass-delivery message on pt.wikisource. how to get an lb-version of the upload wizard?[edit]

Hi Nemo,

I would like to take your attention to the question I asked on the feedback page of the upload wizard on the procedure how to get an lb-version of the upload-wizard. Best regards --Robby (talk) 16:44, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nemo,

I have replied there and added a qqq translation documentation for unit 55 as you suggested. However:

I know that you vehemently oppose transparency requirements for paid editors as set out by the Board in this amendment - no hard feelings about that, you are fully entitled to this opinion, and the Board gave individual projects the option to opt-out following the amendment. But there is no policy that every translation unit must be accompanied by a qqq documentation, and a personal essay on writing styles is not a sufficient basis for edit-warring with the WMF Legal team over its legal statements ([1],[2]). It's particularly weird here because that FAQ addition addressed your own apparent misunderstanding [3].

Regards, Tbayer (WMF) (talk) 02:34, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for qqq. I have not misunderstood anything, but thanks for worrying. --Nemo 15:31, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

User:Nemo_bis/Unused_local_uploads[edit]

Just a question, files which are already uploaded are not affected right? ...Aurora... (talk) 09:24, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's impossible to say how many articles have been translated using machine translation. Currently, we have a backlog of 420 articles tagged with {{Chất lượng dịch}}, but often these articles go unnoticed.

Google isn't to blame here. I merely gave Google Translator Toolkit as an example of the kind of tool that isn't yet capable of writing decent Vietnamese without human intervention. In fact, we were seeing such articles years before GTT, before Google Translate even supported Vietnamese. If I remember correctly, some of the first machine-translated articles came from Chinese Wikipedia users who naïvely thought they could write a Vietnamese article by transliterating a Chinese article into Sino-Vietnamese. (That's a bit like taking a French article and translating it word by word using a Latin–English dictionary.)

If I were to guess, the current state of Vietnamese machine translation can be attributed partly to Vietnamese being a zero-marking language, making it rather difficult to perform part of speech tagging. Making things worse, Sino-Vietnamese with its adjective-noun order often appears without warning in the middle of noun-adjective native Vietnamese. But usually it's English homonyms that trip up the machine translator. Google Translate often suggests alternative translations, if you take the time to consider them. However, there definitely are users who paste English wikitext into Google Translate and blindly copy the result. It happens at Translatewiki.net, too, at the push of a button. I'm pretty sure the only long-term solution is this. :^)

plwikisource[edit]

Referring to your question: We want to have default upload link redirected to commons. But we also want possibility of local uploads for advanced users, preferably not only for admins, if possible. For example for "dumb" files/file links sometimes required for technical reasons, but which can be considered on commons "out of scope". What should we do in this case? Ankry (talk) 11:48, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ankry, then you have to ask your wiki to have an "uploader" group (as ru.wiki does for instance), or keep permissions as they are and just ask $wgUploadNavigationUrl to be set to Commons. --Nemo 12:51, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This has reference to your coment at mr-wiki. I was under impression that it will get implemented by some thing around 17th July 14. But it seems that still unimplemented for unknown reasons. In my personal openion The sidebar point to commons:Special:UploadWizard, and local upload rights to sysops is quite OK. As such most of regulalry used parts of commons upload wizard are already translated to Marathi language.

As far as my personal hypothesis goes Indian laws do not provide any allowance for fair use rationale as far as wikipedia usage is concerned; and I was looking for reconfirmation from Indian legal fraternity that has not come through thats why there has been a delay in incorprating an upload wizard at local level.

So presently solution advocated by you seems to be ok enough with a provision to withdraw at a later stage. Alternatively incorporating upload wizard as of commons with Marathi as a default language at local level with provion for sysops to upload fair usage rational files on case to case basis would also be a good idea.

Thanks and Regards

Turning off the "upload file locally" (Alŝuti dosieron loke) link in the Esperanto Wikipedia?[edit]

Hi Nemo_bis. I am Yekrats, an admin in the Esperanto Wikipedia. In June, you posted in the Esperanto Wikipedia a proposal to use only UploadWizard for uploads there. (See eo:Vikipedio:Diskutejo#Using_only_UploadWizard_for_uploads.) The community recently voted to take a step in that direction, and turn off the link at the left side of the page to local uploads. I made a proposal to this effect, which has been unanimously accepted by the community. If this experiment goes well, and people get used to uploading to Commons exclusively, perhaps we can take further steps to turn it off completely.

That being said, can you please direct us as how to turn off that link along our left column?

Thank you kindly for your help and proposal! -- Yekrats (talk) 18:20, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I see that you removed an entire section of the discussion on this RfC page to the Talk Page. I feel that this was unwise, as although the section that you moved was not directly part of the commenting process it clearly showed one strand of thought in this difficult question. Whilst I feel that the idea of closing the RfC was not helpful, it is equally unhelpful for the discussion to be split over further pages. Further, it is entirely unacceptable to mark such an edit as "minor", as you did. Any substantial removal of this kind is not "minor", and it is misleading to describe it as such.

We have a general principle, at least on en.wikipedia, that what is said remains said. I do agree that the comments you moved were not helpful, but once they were made they should have remained as part of the debate, particularly as they led to some interesting feedback from other editors. Please would you revert your edit. Thanks you. RomanSpa (talk) 09:54, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

While I can agree with your comment in general, there is no such rule here and the section is not diminished by being in Talk namespace. Unless the author actually feels offended, it's not useful to make "a case" out of it. --Nemo 10:10, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:16, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Superprotect letter update[edit]

Hi Nemo bis,

Along with more hundreds of others, you recently signed Letter to Wikimedia Foundation: Superprotect and Media Viewer, which I wrote.

Today, we have 562 signatures here on Meta, and another 61 on change.org, for a total of 623 signatures. Volunteers have fully translated it into 16 languages, and begun other translations. This far exceeds my most optimistic hopes about how many might sign the letter -- I would have been pleased to gain 200 siguatures -- but new signatures continue to come.

I believe this is a significant moment for Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Very rarely have I seen large numbers of people from multiple language and project communities speak with a unified voice. As I understand it, we are unified in a desire for the Wikimedia Foundation to respect -- in actions, in addition to words -- the will of the community who has built the Wikimedia projects for the benefit of all humanity. I strongly believe it is possible to innovate and improve our software tools, together with the Wikimedia Foundation. But substantial changes are necessary in order for us to work together smoothly and productively. I believe this letter identifies important actions that will strongly support those changes.

Have you been discussing these issues in your local community? If so, I think we would all appreciate an update (on the letter's talk page) about how those discussions have gone, and what people are saying. If not, please be bold and start a discussoin on your Village Pump, or in any other venue your project uses -- and then leave a summary of what kind of response you get on the letter's talk page.

Finally, what do you think is the right time, and the right way, to deliver this letter? We could set a date, or establish a threshold of signatures. I have some ideas, but am open to suggestions.

Thank you for your engagement on this issue, and please stay in touch. -Pete F (talk) 18:11, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for translating, it's always nice to see more Turkish in Meta. :-) Speaking of which, participation from tr.wiki is still quite low, I'm afraid most people here are not aware of the facts summarised there. Is there some place where editors regularly look for a list of current votes/polls/surveys/elections and could you add a link there? --Nemo bis (mesaj) 06:08, 4 Eylül 2014 (UTC)

No problem. In fact we don't have a place like that. Other than the page here in meta, I had translated the information message distiributed to our village pump. As far as I know, there is no debate about that issue at Turkish wikipedia. --Mskyrider (talk) 06:14, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, this turned out to be a productive debugging session for PWB [4] [5] and always-instructive python hacking. However now I'll have to go out.
On the bright side, messages without an own header are less invasive on talk pages. :) --Nemo 10:49, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Anyhow, it's disturbing that the undersing does not comply with page history. At least the bot's own undersign should be used with mentioning the sender. Bináris tell me 14:55, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Signatures should be truthful, not "comply with history". The history can be seen... in history. --Nemo 20:11, 12 September 2014 (UTC) P.s.: Moved from section below for clarity.[reply]

Use of bot outside of its remit.[edit]

I see that you have been using your bot for message delivery. I don't see that this is mentioned in its intended use, and I would remind you of the purpose of bots, their tasks, and how to extend the scope of the usage of bots Bot policy#Global bots  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:22, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What remit? I never declared any "remit" for any non-Wikiquote wiki and the usage is consistent with the past. I could have sent the messages from my own account or an alternate, but I didn't want to inflate contributions. I would also have liked to not have the edits flagged as bot, but I don't think it was possible. The edits were trivial and could have been made manually to spend a similar effort or with MassMessage to do them properly, but I chose the harder way because usually people like to see the messengers suffer. :-) --Nemo 20:11, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You asked for a global bot status at Steward requests/Bot status/2009-10#Global bot status for AnankeBot, and your bot user page describes its bot role. The purpose of global bots is not to be perverted to make thing easier for you to do a task outside of the purpose for which you sought a permission. If you didn't declare a use outside of Wikiquote, then probabnly you should not use it outside of the Wikiquotes without seeking that remit.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:53, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed: [6]. It's not my fault if the bot flag is applied where I didn't ask for it and a bot flag is not a way for the community to take over my accounts; "make thing easier" is not what happened, see above. Users don't have an unlimited stock of time to fulfill requests for help: if we keep complaining for the sake of it even when they are being accommodating to our personal suggestions, we shouldn't be surprised when they start ignoring the suggestions and just do what they think best.
If you have specific complaints or accusations, please state them clearly so that they can be dealt with; otherwise, if you're here to help me help people, please offer concrete alternatives or comment on those I mentioned above. Lacking either, consider the above my only answer to your next comment on the matter. --Nemo 07:13, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki:Licenses[edit]

Re: I guess this wiki doesn't have the interest or energies to maintain complex templates and metadata, especially for EDP files. That's not a very nice thing to say. Please change this message. Has it not crossed your minds that some wikis have no problem with licencing misuse on non-free content? I also think that threatening to switch off something within a few days on a wiki should NOT be the default. The status quo should (imho) be the default. Hebrew wikicommons message[edit]

The following only has two small jokes: When you say 'simply' I added '(tee hee that's my username)'.
The reason for this is that Pashute means Simply...
The second Joke is in you user name which I wrote is Nemo (Federico Levi)
The page will show correctly on the Hebrew wiki, although it will not here in yours. (The missing logo is just one example. Check it on my talk page)
Anyway, here comes (in the next section, I moved up the heading number...) Pashute (talk) 07:11, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the jokes, I wouldn't have noticed them if you hadn't told me. :-) We do indeed not know if our surname used to be "Levi" in 19th century or earlier, but one branch of the family is possibly turning Jew so maybe we'll discover. --Nemo 07:31, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re from vi.wikt: MediaWiki:Licenses[edit]

Hello Nemo, we responsed your message here: wikt:vi:Thảo luận MediaWiki:Licenses. For added: I am one of those who initiated redirect uploading file to Commons in Vietnamese Wikipedia (you can using Google Translate this page). Unfortunately, this RfC ended without a absolutely decision. Now I'm in the effort to transfer freely files to Commons. Thus, Vietnamese Wikipedia will be only contained non-free images (EDP) which are closely patrolled per resolution of WMF. --minhhuy (talk) 14:50, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, interesting information. Thank you also for updating EDP. viwikibooks is ok with it, right? --Nemo 16:38, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Many EDP files without permission, license or source currently is in vi.wikibooks. We will help to eliminate them gradually, since we support none-EDP in all projects except Wikipedia. --minhhuy (talk) 18:31, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Special:Upload in sc.wikipedia[edit]

iswiki[edit]

Hello. I believe someone has already removed iswiki from the list of those that would be moved over to Commons. Due to copyright laws around buildings for example we can not upload images to Commons that we can upload under the correct license to iswiki so this would only make things harder for us. Thanks for asking. --Stalfur (talk) 23:24, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Microfiches[edit]

Re: "Never ever English Wikipedia first"[edit]

Hi Nemo, thanks for the reminder on the CEP Process page. I'm still in my first few months at the Foundation which have left me inundated with information, so sometimes a reminder is needed (and yes, those are enough examples now). I'm checking the diffs as they come in on the page; with the length of it it's easy to forget about information. Would love some advice on keeping it all in mind if you have any. OAD[edit]

I gave a little advice to Peter Suber in 2008 when it was being set up, but never actually did any work there.

I was quite active in the OA movement from about 1998/9 when I was biology librarian at Princeton, for about the next 10 years. By now, most of the people I worked with have retired also, & after we do, none of us are taken seriously. You'll find my postings on liblicense and AmSci as dgoodman@njp. Commons / Huwikibooks[edit]

Please undo the change what you talked about here. We didn't asked (and neither we want to see in the future) any unwanted and unasked changes like those which are sadly frequent on Youtube, Facebook, or DeviantArt nowadays. We are conservative people who used to "progress" with their own speed and we think HuWikiBooks project is quite qood without these kind of "developements" and "helps". We don't want every files of ours to automatic uploaded into commons, and one of our most valued editors wants to leave the project because of this. Hi, I have realized that you have made a change in the Hungarian Wikibooks, which is redirecting the Upload file (hu: Fájlok feltöltése) page to the Commons upload page. I think that nobody asked you for this change and nobody of us wanted it. You have also not consulted nobody of us in advance, and you are also not a contributor to the Hungarian Wikibooks. You may also not have an idea how the Hungarian Wikibooks working. As an editor in Hungarian Wikibooks I can tell you that this change is highly annoying and hindering. A lot of people form outside also sending files to the books I am editing. Have they all know English to upload a file? I think not. For this reason, as the leading Editor in Hungarian Wikibooks I would like to ask you to remove the change, and I also would like to ask you not to make any unsolicited changes in the Hungarian Wikibooks.--Szegedi László (talk) 09:55, 17 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

uploads from German wikiversity[edit]

as you have written about the closing of the uploadfunction on German wikiversity, I write to you, as I guess you take care about problems arising from this migration. Stop Weing – saying we to seperate (we & us versus you & me)[edit]

(Citation: „Remove needless and harmful sentence due to unclear subject. Who's we? Not all authors are in WMF.“) Thank you, refering to Wikimedia Foundation board manual. Actually it might be useful to think and state what "we" means? - Neverthess. “We”: The Wikimedia Movement (WMM) as an international Community of Indivdual Volunteers (iCIV) shall be we– in coordination with Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) which might be called the we of WMM & WMF together one day. --Edward Steintain (talk) 19:19, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not a subscriber of organicism, I don't feel a compelling need to have a single definition of "we". We are millions in Wikimedia, so there are billions and billions of possible "we" with all the combinations. Diversity should be embraced, the solution as regards "we" is just to use it carefully (only where its meaning absolutely clear) in a way that doesn't impose one's own identity on the others. --Nemo 19:28, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
People tend to compare. It is “we” and “they”. The wiki-idea has a new task to combine diversity and tolerance leading to something that might be a next step towards truth. A long way for WMM and WMF to go (so far without any structured particapation of the the reader). WMM and WMF are bargaining all alone in a closed shop: Playing an out-of-world-game by we is not you:ϟ --Edward Steintain (talk) 20:02, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wiki has only started. It needs a RfC (Request for Clarification): The basics have been set. Next wiki needs to go for structured cooperation by tolerance – the use of free knowledge. Why is free knowledge useful? --Edward Steintain (talk) 20:14, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Local Uploads in FaWN[edit]

Why did you limit local uploads in fawn? you're not from foundation right?, we had set a policy so we could use some photos in case of breaking news as {{تصویر خبر فوری}}, exactly like enwn as {{Breaking news image}}, and local community agreed to enable uploads, and so did. what happened? then why wikinews is using different license than wikipedia?  Mjbmr (discussioncontribs) 19:04, 24 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[9] No one creates new policy without any discussion unless it's a translation from English version of that project. Mjbmr (discussioncontribs) 16:19, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Can you link me to a consensus for zhwikivoyage? [10] Mjbmr (discussioncontribs) 01:01, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And how do you rely on someone's information? Mjbmr (discussioncontribs) 01:06, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Mjbmr: For zhwikivoyage, see here and here. If these are not enough:
  • Files that published before Jan 1, 1923 are in the Public Domain in the US, but if its author(s) has died not more than 50 anniversaries, then his/her/their files are still copyrighted.
  • Per United States non-acceptance of the rule of the shorter term, files that already in the Public Domain in the Greater China (their copyright years are life + 50 years, except Singapore, which is life + 70 years) will remain copyrighted in the US.
If you're still unclear, ask @Jusjih: is a good idea. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 06:54, 11 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Liuxinyu970226: As I remember right after creation of every Persian wiki, we as local community agreed to translate policies from native Project and by native I mean English version of that project. why? 'cause we believed those are WMF policies and won't get our project into trouble, as of Persian Wikinews we talked about enabling local uploads on talk pages and IRC for days then chose to make a poll page, that's why you don't see any discussion of that page, besides meta community has no intelligent of Persian. our community has lost lot's of people due the time and mostly is 'cause of poor economy of our country. @Nemo bis: has even never checked our files, there was only one file of fair use and I've deleted it. besides people have no interest in keeping copyrighted content, and in other side I don't see any copyright relation between Iran and any other country. Mjbmr (discussioncontribs) 08:42, 11 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thus, phab:T28565#978900. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:00, 17 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mjbmr, I don't understand what's so hard here. Creating a policy needs a discussion, just open a local discussion. The wiki has 46 contributors in total, it can't take much time. To the contrary, discussions in unrelated places like this talk are just a waste of time. --Nemo 08:16, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have to translate the policy first. Uploading a local image might be needed once a year. but I'm gonna rely on commons myself. I've seen people's image due to not specifying the right template gets deleted. Mjbmr (discussioncontribs) 16:09, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Let us know when you discuss/decide something. --Nemo 16:13, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ciao Nemo[edit]

request from mr wikipedia[edit]

Hi,

Seasons Greetings, at this page on mr-wikipedia we had a brief discussion in july 2014 and decided to suspend local media file uploading for non sysops for a while to bring in awareness and desciplene on file licencing and copyright issues. While those issues are still not completelely sorted out still there we find a need to be flexible and allow file uploading to all from 21st Jan to 7th june; the reason being jan to may month has lot of important days and celebrations regarding Marathi language and May month is school holiday season off line marathi students tend to visit Marathi Wikipedia and upload phographs for photothon . it is emotional connect and some specialy developed android apps are tuned to marthi wikipedia.

So local community wishes we allow local uploading from 21 jan to 7th june. Since I have not started and used to new facility in place of bugzill I will apreciate your support in this respect to file the bug on our behalf

I'm sorry, I want to help but I don't know how to act on this request. Either you want local uploads, or you don't. We don't do time-based changes to this. So, please decide what you want, and let us know.
How hard is it to fix the android apps in question? --Nemo 08:11, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It is about making people used to marathi wikipedia, creating an emotional connect. once those photographs are uploaded through app in a cource of time orgnisors do transfer usefull images to commons also. In any case I am not the app developer and orgnisor of various events events. And all the uploading necessarilly wont be from events or android either. There is no pint in forcing single solution, I suppose.

Bye the way with little effort I could file a bug on phabricator please let me know whom to give follow up so that the things will work as people want.

  • Ok, got no reply on the task either about the apps in question. "Photothon" doesn't find anything, "फोटोथोन" little more. I see one user welcome for the photothon. w:mr:विकिपीडिया:चावडी/इतर चर्चा/जुनी चर्चा १ has instructions which don't include any app. If you link the apps in question, I'll try to fix them.
  • If [11] is what you did: a contest doesn't work well if users have to wait 4 days, are you sure local upload is better? Perhaps you also want to allow any user to upload, as happens in Commons?
  • We can enable uploads, but w:mr:MediaWiki:Licenses is empty. Special:Upload wouldn't really work anyway. According to the instructions above, you only want users to upload self-made photos under free licenses, right? Those images are also allowed on Commons, where cc-by-sa-3.0 is translated. I don't see it yet on mr.wiki.

When you have fixed MediaWiki:Licenses and decided what to do about the 4 days restriction, let us know. --Nemo 11:39, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I found w:mr:वर्ग:फोटोथोन - २०१२. Is there another category for the other years? This one contains 1300 files, but most of them seem to be copyvios. I'm glad to help cleaning up, as you have a big backlog. --Nemo 13:06, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

SUL announcement translations[edit]

I've updated the general announcement as well as the personal announcement to clarify that users can use Special:GlobalRenameRequest now on their local wikis, as you probably saw I emailed the translators list about getting the strings localized. Would you mind if I followed up with the translators who worked on these messages that you contacted originally, or would you prefer to do it? I'm just fine doing it myself but I don't want to step on your toes and duplicate communication if this is something you are doing/planning on doing. I plan to start notifying accounts to be affected by email and talk pages within the next couple of weeks once legoktm has built the Special page that will expose the users-to-be-renamed table locally for all wikis. wikisource error with OCR from IA book processed in 2008[edit]

Hello Nemo_bis,

In a help discussion at wikisource your name was provided as a possible IA admin who would give some advice about this book - https://archive.org/details/irishemigrationt00duff - that has errors in processing it for wikisource - the OCR routine at the time -2008- could not handle complex tables that take up almost an entire page. This situation has happened before. Perhaps this may be time to describe the preferred procedure.

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Scriptorium#Why_no_automatic_ocr_text_layer_.3F

Which of these 2 possible directions would give a better result:

1 - Have an IA admin re-derive the file on IA

OR

2 - add the pdf to IA with different file name and use the subsequently derived files. Note earlier today I added the pdf to IA with a slightly different name - https://archive.org/details/irishemigrationt01duff

Thank you for your input. Robin2014 (talk) 20:45, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Should I do something else? --Iltever(talk) 06:51, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Nemo.
I would like to turn your attention to my mistake : "ацентилен" => "atsetilen" (line 135).
The correct transliteration undoubtedly is : "ацетилен" => "atsetilen". Sorry for my carelessness.
Is there anything I can do? --Iltever(talk) 09:12, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry one more time. There is one more mistake: "Юголсвия" => "Yugoslaviya" (line 176). The correct: "Югославия" => "Yugoslaviya". --Iltever(talk) 13:50, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately I don't know much about machine codes.... I have to see the words. --Iltever(talk) 14:59, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Nemo. I've found some discrepancy in my example conversions. Perhaps this conversion for the character "Щ щ" (lines 143, 144) will not make a failure: « Щ щ » щётка, щёлочь = « Şç şç » şçötka, şçöloç. --Iltever(talk) 18:11, 16 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi Nemo! Sorry, I was just passing by and I noticed you are working with cyr-lat converters. If you are really working with them, could you please have a look at the crh: converter? Greetings. These days I'm working on telugu wikiquote and found that you've removed local file upload due to very less activity there. It is a good decision for that time, but now handful of telugu wikimedians along with me are working on the project. We are very much need in uploading local files in telugu wikiquote. So, please consider reinstallation of local file uploads.
with regards,

Domanda sui sockpuppet[edit]

Mi sembra tutto ancora un work in progress. --Alexmar983 (talk) 11:25, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

--Baruneju (talk) 16:55, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Updated scripts[edit]

Hi Nemo bis. I edited your monobook.js to update you to the latest version of ajax sysop, which is compatible with the latest MediaWiki changes and resides on the Wikimedia Tool Labs for easier updates. I also updated deprecated functions and made your scripts HTTPS-compatible. Let me know if anything breaks. :) —Pathoschild 05:39, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello Sir ! I am temporary admin at bhohjpuri wikipedia (bh.wikipedia.org). recently we got a message that local uploads of pics is going to be disabled! Since, I wasn't sure what to do... I request you to kindly grant bh.wikipedia to upload images and files. Tell me what is more needed to do this work. Thanks! --सत्यम् मिश्र (talk) 19:01, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

cs.wikiquote: admins keep vandalism/trolling on Main Page for years[edit]

Hi, please revisit the discussion on cs.wikiquote: q:cs:Diskuse_k_Wikicitátům:Hlavní_strana#WMCZ. As proved in the discussion the added text is indeed vandalism/trolling, totally inapproprate for the Main Page of any project, would be legally considered libel/defamation and a civil law delict according to Czech law and many other (not only European) legal systems. The admins User:Danny B. and User:Milda didn′t intervene because both of them are former members of WMCZ who left the organization after its articles of association (bylaw) were changed (they had some personal issues with it) and this is their way to seek "revenge". Both of them should be punished for allowing libel/defamation on the Main Page of WM project for such a long time. --Auvajs (talk) 16:08, 13 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Wikimedia Blog/Drafts/Free knowledge author visits European parliament members[edit]

- Laurentius (talk) 09:49, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help formatting Wiki Loves Monuments evaluation report[edit]

Hi Nemo! Thank you for your help formatting Wiki Loves Monuments evaluation report. I really appreciate an experienced wikipedian reviewing format issues. I write back to you also to let you know I took your advice on semantic titles, but turned it around a bit to fit the design we developed for these reports. You can see the differences here.
Further, I wanted to note that having the references in a closed box (available for expansion) follows the style guideline we developed, for ease of navigation and reading. Each page of the report has a lot of information, and the references usually expand the pages a lot, so we chose to have them like that. I'm sure users will quickly understand the notes are there and be able to find them easily, even if the anchor doesn't work as such. I will, however, look into having the box expanded by default (if that's possible).
Thanks again for helping us out! Don't hesitate to get back to me on my talk page if you have follow up comments on how we can make the reports easy to navigate and read. Cheers, MCruz (WMF) (talk) 20:31, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Support_collaboration_on_Pashto_Wikipedia[edit]

[12] That is not a duplicate. The old RfC was a user complaint, focused on "homophobia." The underlying situation was far more complex. The new RfC is placed as an RfC, but is really a process page focused on assisting the Pashto community at finding consensus. Please allow this trial of a new process some breathing space.

It will be facilitated toward seeking agreement among Pashto users, because with agreement, they can get things done. No agreement, no admin action, properly. This can actually work, I've seen it.

The old RfC should really be closed. Much to my surprise, there was action. The existing administrators and the 'crat were all removed. This is a very unusual situation. Now, that community needs special support, because it has a substantial active wiki to maintain, and there are language problems. Thanks for your attention. --Abd (talk) 19:45, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost feature about article counts[edit]

As you already know, I've been asked to write up a "detailed summary" of the many issues surrounding Wikimedia article counts for use as a Signpost feature article. It looks like this is the week to have it published (i.e., this Wednesday). Unfortunately, as I work on it, I continue to discover more things I didn't know about article counting. So, I'm wondering whether you (as someone relatively knowledgeable on the subject) could do me a huge favor and read over what I have written so far, and let me know if you find any obvious mistakes or misunderstandings in there. Note that I am still working on it, so it's peppered with notes to myself here and there… - dcljr (talk) 07:58, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I still have a couple of questions related to your actions/decisions, specifically (that I'd like clarification on before the Signpost feature is published):
  1. Why not recount Wikibooks each month? Does updateArticleCounts.php not implement the "comma" method correctly? (That's what it looks like to me. In fact, I have some doubt about the "all" method, as well.)
  2. (If so:) Would it be possible to recount all the Wikibooks except English and Portuguese with the updateArticleCount.php script, and recount only those two languages in a way that respects the "comma" method?
I am pressing this Wikibooks issue mainly because, if the analysis I did back in 2012 is any indication, the current Wikibooks counts are likely to be just as wrong as those in the rest of the sister projects were. - dcljr (talk) 22:52, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I still don't know for sure if updateArticleCounts.php correctly implements the "comma" method or not. Can you verify which it is? - dcljr (talk) 21:40, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's what it looks like to me, but then I'm not at all familiar with the MediaWiki source code, so I wanted someone else to concur. Thanks. - dcljr (talk) 21:53, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Request to use different template[edit]

Hi,

Please refer to your contributions (using a bot) in file name space on mr-wikipedia to place delete template. The given meaning of the present w:mr:Template:Delete template is not necessarily best one for the given purpose and we have deviced a new template w:mr:Template:Delete-image which is more suitable for the given purpose and it would be better idea to replace {{Delete}} with {{Delete-image}} on the said files.

Before deleting some of those files we want to conduct a specific awareness campaign among community members through email lists and social media so they realise the mistake and mistakes are not repeated. Replacing replace {{Delete}} with {{Delete-image}} is likely to help in above objective hence this request.

Bot support request[edit]

Hi,

We are requesting a bot support to remove two templates namely "{{Own Work}} {{Cc}}" from Marathi wikipedia's file name space mistakenly (i.e. without respective user/uploader parmissions) placed by one local bot w:mr:User:चीत्रकाम्या vide these contributions dated 18th February 2013

  • kindly help us in getting templates "{{Own Work}} {{Cc}}" removed as requested above with the help of a suitable bot.

This is part of the steps needed to ask users to do and update licensing of their own files themselves.

How to go about[edit]

Hi,

Uptil now we have not received any feed back to our request at Talk:Wikilegal#Requests for comment/Applicability of Creative Commons in India; As such undersigned wanted to schedule a social media campaign (June 2015 onwards) among marathi language wikipedians making an apeal to get licences updated for the images they have uploaded uptil now. Undersigned prefers to have some sort of clarity on the above issue, before starting any such campaign.

Please do suggest.

Thanks and Warm regards

Mahitgar (He who knows ,wants to know and and loves to keep others informed) (talk) 11:01, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, it seems you are busy in some other activities. I would prefer to keep you updated about this subject in hand, per my communication with Wikilegal team they are still researching the subject and it is likely take its own time. My view is let discussion on 'Applicability of Creative Commons in India' continue in future too. It would be always safe to have additional documentation Form I & Affidavit (Customised for reliqushment of copyright as per 'free cultural work' definition) than regret in future. At Marathi wikipedia we can attach this document to Template:Self while making copyright reliquishment declaration, and we can go ahead with our campaign of apeal to update licences.

Meaning of 'scappato di casa'[edit]

I read an autotranslation of https://it.wikiquote.org/wiki/Utente:Nemo_bis/Elezioni_WMF/2015 and see 'scappato di casa' (run away from home) in most of the entries. Could you explain what this means? Perhaps your analysis is these people are hoping to run away from problems on their home wikis by running for the foundation board? I guess that the phrase has some obvious meaning in Italian that I am missing. Feel free to answer here or there if you wish to answer at all. I am not sure whether it is considered offensive to ask a question in English on an it.wikiquote talk page. Thanks! Mike Linksvayer (talk) 17:19, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Linksvayer, it's a secret I may reveal after the elections. ;-) That's really just a personal scratchpad, I've not even checked whether the phrase is used in "my" sense outside my city... or family. --Nemo 19:53, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nemo, I linked to this from my blog (as you may have seen), which is why Mike saw it. But now I wonder if you would prefer less publicity. I would be happy to remove it from the blog post and my user page if you like, just let me know. -Pete F (talk) 20:43, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • hi Nemo, I fully respect your right to any opinion you may have on me, however it would be nice if you also tried to keep to at least basic accuracy in terms of facts :) it would seem that you're implying my limited experience on boards, while I am one of the most experienced of the candidates. Latin script articles in the Konkani Wikipedia[edit]

Hi Nemo, I feel that the Konkani Wikipedia, which has been approved by LangCom, should inclue the Latin script articles as well.

--Sannita - not just another it.wiki sysop 13:09, 20 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Or do you think we just sit and wait until Wikidata takes over the role for storing all these data and the Wikipedia then just export these data. --Aschroet (talk) 12:55, 24 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

BUB tools[edit]

I have a question about the BUB tool. It seems that the queue is stuck. It's like that for quite a long time, I've tried to contact Rohit Dua but I didn't receive any answer. I don't know if you can help me. Thank you Weft (talk) 17:13, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Project WIN[edit]

Hello,
We are planning a project to improve WikiProject India (English Wikipedia). I'd appreciate if you kindly leave your feedback here --TitoDutta 09:56, 19 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Vision[edit]

Hiya Nemo. I always find your feedback helpful. I was reading through some discussion about Flow and a couple of points gave me pause. I made an attempt on starting an Engineering vision document. I would appreciate it, if you can take a look and add your thoughts to the essay or leave a comment. Thanks. Theo10011 (talk) 20:19, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposta IEG StrepHit: richiesta di supporto[edit]

Ciao @Nemo,

Ciao! --Hjfocs (talk) 14:03, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Content translation campaigns[edit]

--Ilario (talk) 17:54, 11 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Schulze method[edit]

Hello Nemo. I was reading this old discussion and I noticed that you have made a mistake! The following quotation is not from Markus Schulze, but someone claiming to be RRichie:

The Schulze method is a very defensible voting method to use when electing one person, but it's too bad that a winner-take-all is used to elect three seats. Although unlikely, it means that 49% of voters might strongly disagree with the views of the winners. Many NGO's use voting methods where about a third voters could have the power to elect one of three seats.

By the way, I'm here to ask you what happened next? Didn't you started an RFC to switch back to Schulze method? I got tired delving into old discussions for finding some clues! so I decided to ask you directly. I have already found that 2013 election committee was not organized well and a disproportionate load was carried by User:Risker. I also think that she was the brains behind the plan of switch from Schulze to conventional Support/Abstain/Oppose voting system.

We have formed an investigating committee to choose the most appropriate method for our ArbCom elections and we are now considering different voting system. We lean towards Schulze method because our community has suffered a lot from numerous loopholes in the conventional S/A/O system in the past 6 elections. We are interested to know the story behind this switch.

Do you exactly know why the 2015 election committee decided to keep the S/A/O system? 4nn1l2 (talk) 20:56, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You said that the French Wikipedia uses the Condorcet method. But as far as I know using a simple Condorcet method can produce a loop (A>B, B>C, C>A). All of the works that Markus Schulze has done is to come up with a brilliant idea to break this loop! I really got surprised to know that French Wikipedians use a simple Condorcet method!
Do French Wikipedians use a single-winner version or a proportional representation variant? 4nn1l2 (talk) 21:20, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
