Interwiki map

Hello. I was wondering if you could add the BS01 Wiki to the interwiki map per my request? I have given what I think is a valid argument for adding it on Talk: Interwiki map#BS01_Wiki_request. I'm kind of new here, so if this is the wrong place to put this, please let me know. Thanks. --TorriTorri 21:53, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Category:EasyTimeline Examples

You deleted Category:EasyTimeline Examples (Deletion per discussion at Requests for deletion) on May, but I failed to find the discussion you meant. The only discussion I know was held in the early of this year, and then there was no consensus. Could you point the discussion you meant? Thank you. --Aphaia 05:43, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

The discussion you're looking for is "Category:EasyTimeline Examples" in the 2006 archive. That discussion had two delete votes, including the nomination, after being listed for nineteen days. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 00:05, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Pagemoves

I am no longer page movers. all WoWs on here apart from Willy on Wheels (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • GUC • CA) are impersonators. --Willy On Wheels 12:56, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Interwiki map - an update

Previously, LyricWiki was denied for interwiki linking on Talk:Interwiki_map#LyricWiki because the legal issues made it questionable whether free lyrics sites are okay to link to. Recently however, LyricWiki began relationships with publishers so that they now get royalties from the site, making it completely legal. I'm respectfully requesting a re-evaluation in light of the recent changes. Thank you. -03:08, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Gastrich

On Dave's page you wrote "Jason Gastrich has no record of any misconduct on this wiki". Ignoring the sock puppet, Ruth Ginsling, a link to Gastrich's page, which includes <nowiki>[http://jcsm.org/1on1/ResponsetoHateSites.htm this]</nowiki> attack on wikipedia. Some highlights of that page include Wikipedia "is an awful place for Christians who sincerely want the truth fairly represented" and other personal attacks. See the deletion discussion for links to personal attacks of users. Arbusto 00:26, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Criticism of a project is not a personal attack, projects not being persons; for more information on what constitutes a personal attack, rather than simple speech or criticism, see w:Personal attack. Every individual has the right to their opinions and such comments usually cause no harm. Unless his comments harm the project in some way, I see no reason to censor him. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 00:38, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Please discuss the issue on the deletion page; an administrator there will carry out whatever decision is reached. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 01:55, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Sure, but I wrote here to directly respond to the several areas where you defended him. Is using sock puppets on metawiki "misconduct"? Arbusto 01:56, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
No, nor is it misconduct on en-Wikipedia. It is abusive sockpuppets that are disallowed. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 02:41, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Gastrich

May I suggest you semi-protect Gastrich's talk page so the incessant revert wars over various statements stop? Since most of the editors in question seem to be IPs that should deal with it for now. JoshuaZ 04:02, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Serbian Wiki

Hello,

I'd like you to help out with this situation. A user (Kale) that was nominated for an administrator on Serbian wiki got less than 70% and he was made an admin. Our rules state that noone can be an admin without at least 70% support of the community. The community decided that Kale should not be an admin, but some admins who voted in support made him an admin anyways (hint: abusive admins). The community has decided, Kale got 69.38% which is NOT enough to become an admin.

I would also like to point out that I understand that we need consensus on our wiki, and as you can see, the majority did vote for Kale, but not enough. 0.62% must NOT be put aside, and the rules must be inforced, even if its 0.000001% difference, right? Kale will have a chance to be nominated 3 months later again, but for now, if you overlook this, it will be a very sad day for Wikipedia, and tomorrow someone might become an admin with 68% or even 60%, just because its almost there. Can you stop this blatant disregard for the basic rules of wiki? Please de-sysop Kale. Thanks in advance, --The SrWiki User 05:07, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

That is a matter for the local community to resolve. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 02:44, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

There's a wide selection of mirrors you can link to instead. I've delinked the domain on the talk page, so you should be able to edit again. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 17:47, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. My post didn't even have the link in it, but it wasn't allowing me to edit the talk page. I still can't update the talk page. might be a glitch? Also, is there a discussion about what links are placed on the spam list because we're discussing the validity of one of the site's pages now. If the link's validity is established will it be removed from the "SPAM" list? Thanks Cochese8 18:14, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

I would like to accommodate your requirements or acknowledgement of this fact and in good faith for the release of this information on the page titled Author:Chris_Mar and apologize for any and all areas of lapse in wiki protocol. I also would like you to know that all submissions including those relating and/or titled Tactical Combat and Counterterrorism as referred to on abovementioned page are my own work and are current materials being referenced for the purposes as stated.

It is important for me personally to ask for your assistance and understanding as this page is viewed as a reference by members of the international tactical community in that my work continues in terror interdiction and tactical integration protocols.

I am an American Citizen now in the Asia/PAC and have served as a Chief Tactical Instructor since prior to 1983 which is when I was commissioned as a founding chief instructor of the ROC Tactical Police Network, SWAT and Rapid Reaction Deployment. I continue to work out of Taiwan, DFW, Shanghai, and Beijing among other areas and according to specific mission objectives. I do not wish for any public information which relates to me or my service to leave question as to its validity which will directly affect my work.

Thank you for your contacting me at lily.pad@msa.hinet.net if at all possible and otherwise I will check back as time allows.

Hoping to hear or know of your positive return.

Sincerely;

Chris Mar Chief Tactical Instructor

It is very important to my on-going work and to the agencies which reference back to these materials that you unblock the contents. I am the founding Chief Instructor for Taiwan's SWAT Police and the only Chief Instructor officially authorized by China's SPG - Special Police Group, which is the highest echelon tactical counterterror team training entity and is the main operational instructors group for the Armed Military Police under the PLA, China. My work specifically focuses on terror interdiction, rescue and extraction, close quarters and tactical integration protocol and I am the only person to hold full Chief Instructor authorization and certification from both sides of the Taiwan Straits. The contents which I provide are my own and integral to my work. All content is true.
I can see that you are busy however I also note that you have answered everyone's concerns except for mine. Please advise.

Using language select on Wikiversity beta

Hello Pasthoschild,

I have been looking at this awesome system and I would like to talk with you about it. I think about using it on Wikiversity Beta, which is a multilingual coordination platform. Maybe we could talk on IRC? Let me know when you're available :)

Thanks! guillom 15:58, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello Guillom. I'm usually available in #wikimedia on freenode after 23:00 UTC (01:00 CEST). // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 00:44, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Actually that's quite late for me :( I am usually on this channel from ~6:00 to ~20:00 (UTC). Anyway. I had been looking at the project page and it seemed quite complicated to me. But I see you have cleaned it (thanks for this), so now I can try to implement it on Beta.
Apart from this, I see you have removed the sitenotice on meta. However, when the local sitenotice is blanked, the global sitenotice is displayed. You should either modify meta sitenotice (see this one) or change the global sitenotice too. guillom 09:20, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Showing the global sitenotice was deliberate; I assumed the developers would update it soon. :) // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 13:14, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Possible impersonator (Psychopathoschild)

This new user has 4 edits, one to his user and talk pages which are ripped off yours. The other 2 were to vandalise AFD by speedily keeping them. You may want to block for impersonation. - Hahnchen 23:30, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I got unblocked. But where should I paste the contents of the block infobox ? Simone Shalimar 17:27, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

You don't need to in this case, since I could unblock your account without that information. Usually you can simply paste it below the {{unblock}} template. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 17:29, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Unfair blockage

I noticed that you had blocked my friend who had recently signed up as I R SMARTEST YES because the user name wasn't very appropriate. Yes, fine. So he registered with a new user name, Pringley Man, but was annoyed to find that he is blocked again because his older account was blocked. I don't think this second blocking is fair and he's losing faith in Wikipedia, already frustrated with being repeatedly blocked and unable to contribute to Wikipedia. --Brandon Dilbeck 22:23, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

The block is a technical issue, not a problem of fairness; see Wikipedia:Autoblock for information on why he was automatically reblocked. I've lifted the autoblock, so he should be able to edit now. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 22:27, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Question

22:34, September 15, 2006 Pathoschild (Talk | contribs | block) deleted "User talk:France91449144" (Indefinitely blocked, unneeded discussion)
22:30, September 15, 2006 Pathoschild (Talk | contribs | block) blocked "France91449144 (contribs)" with an expiry time of indefinite (Vandalism)

Hi, I'm curious, is it common to delete the talk pages of indef blocked users? I'm don't think it's a half bad idea, especially considering WP:DENY, but I haven't seen this move so much in the past. I thought it was more common to put an {{indefblocked}} or the like. Thanks, -- Deville (Talk) 22:47, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Hello Deville. It's not common practice, being based on the recently-written DenyRecognition, but an increasing number of administrators agree with such deletions. I don't watch the deletion log, so I don't know how many of them (if any) delete such pages as well. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 00:35, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm definitely a fan of WP:DENY at least in principle, and I think that in the long run this may be the right way to go for indef blocks. However, I think it's the first time I've ever seen someone do this. --- Deville (Talk) 06:17, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

WP:DENY

Hi, Pathoschild. WP:DENY is a not official Guideline, stop to deleteds.--Zoson 04:11, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Since DenyRecognition is an essay explaining the deletions, not a guideline driving them, it does not need official guideline status. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 04:15, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
  • Well, it may not be an official policy, but there have been problems with vandals. Notably, Johnny the Vandal has been causing trouble as of late, i.e. vandalizing pages, false information and slanderous comments to Arwel Parry. In addition, he posted a nude picture of an actress which could have led Wikipedia and Wikimedia into lawsuits. Primetime, another vandal, also could have led Wikipedia into legal trouble and might have put the Wikimedia Commons in jeopardy. Thank you for your time. VelairWight 00:19, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Brazil4Linux talk

During one of those WP:DENY deletions, you deleted User:Brazil4Linux talk page and regular page, he had well over 2,500 edits before being blocked indef. I restored it, try to avoid deleting userpages who have more than 1,000 edits. Jaranda wat's sup 04:02, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Feel free to create a template for indefinitely blocked users with a significant number of edits. If I notice an indefinitely blocked user who happens to have edited Pokémon a few times before being blocked, I'll be sure to note that particular piece of trivia with your template. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 03:54, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

MediaWiki workaround documentation

Can you full protect all the templates you created from that workaround? A few are already protected. I put the request on requests for page protection, but Voice of All's bot is wonky and is either deleting my request or moving it to fulfilled/declined. Since they're transcluded from the MediaWiki space, noone should probably edit them but those that can edit the mediawiki namespace, which would be admins. Kevin_b_er 01:55, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Your bot's recent substitutions

Why is your bot replacing {{Blocked proxy}} tags with {{Indefblockeduser}} tags? I can understand that deleting the userpages of vandals is sometimes useful (unless he or she is running an ongoing sock farm, in which case it should a link to the list of socks which can be used to investigate future sock farm cases), I do not see any use in deleting the user pages of open proxies, because it does not glorify vandals and makes it easier to help the owners of the open proxies or zombies to clean up or secure their machines. Jesse Viviano 01:31, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for noticing this; I've refined my bot's instructions to recognize open proxy blocks and retag them appropriately. Next time I run my bot, I'll have it reprocess all IP pages to fix any such mistakes. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 06:45, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
Don't forget about the {{Tor}} and {{Zombie proxy}} tags. Jesse Viviano 14:35, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
Should your bot also ignore consented blocks, like at User:203.167.208.174? Jesse Viviano 21:14, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
That page should not have been categorised to :Category:Indefinitely blocked Wikipedia accounts, being of a temporary nature with a definite limit. I don't see any reason to treat consenting indefinite blocks differently from other indefinite blocks; the reason is easily found in the block log should they wish to be unblocked at a later time. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 00:10, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Template:Must subst

Shouldn't the documentation (and the title of the template) say that it used for templates that must not be substituted? —Centrxtalk • 21:04, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Quite possibly. :) I'll go fix that now. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 00:01, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

subst

I remember you had an objection to subst'ing the {{usernameblocked}} template. One culprit of this is here. pschemp | talk 13:00, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for pointing it out. I made the template add pages to Temporary Wikipedian userpages, so that they aren't orphaned when the template is substituted. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 23:30, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Pathosbot

I suggest you turn off this fn/fnb "deprecating" stuff; it doesn't work right. Print out Lale Andersen and then tell me which little number refers to what. If you want to fix it, see Swabian War for how to do this properly. Even much better, though, would be to implement fn/fnb in terms of ref/note or one of the _label variants. Lupo 19:20, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for pointing that out; I'll have the bot convert to {{ref label}} instead and look through the pages it has parsed for similar situations. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 19:37, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. Frankly said, I am not sure this fn/fnb replacement can be done fully automatically. Using _label and letters may work in most cases, but there may be cases where that fails, too. In any case, the result must have the same id in the endnote as is used in the text flow, otherwise the connection gets lost when the article is printed. And even on-screen, it's less than clear if the notes do not repeat the superscripted id used in the text flow. And furthermore, the ids used for fn/fnb or its replacement should not conflict with any other id sequence used for other endnotes, such as numbers generated by the <ref>-mechanism. Looks to me like a case where human oversight is needed. Lupo 21:01, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
I've suggested a change to {{ref}} that will make this much easier (see "Optional naming" on {{ref}}'s talk page), but I agree that I'll need to check every edit for cases where the bot fails. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 21:07, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

One article, two note systems--is it possible?
Hi. I've reverted the changes pathosbot made to English plural and Hollywood blacklist. I understand the current subordinate footnoting systems are deprecated, but pathosbot's adjustments only made things worse. The common issue is this: Is it possible to have two numbered (or symbolic) notation systems within one article? One that goes to "endnotes" after the article's main text (primarily for citations), and another that goes to "footnotes" within or at the end of given sections (primarily for amplifications and clarifications). This is easily done in print; surely it is possible on Wikipedia! For all its good work, pathosbot only makes that goal more difficult to achieve. Do you have any suggestions or insights? All the best, Dan —DCGeist 21:13, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

I apologize for the mess I inadvertently caused in this case; see the discussion I've merged this with, in which Lupo brings it to my attention as well. I've proposed changes to the main footnote template that will allow us to exactly mimic the appearance and behaviour of the deprecated {{fn}}/{{fnb}} templates, and I'll switch all pages to that new syntax as soon as I apply the changes (early tomorrow, if there's no opposition). // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 21:29, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

scramjet
I've reverted your bot's fn|fnb replacement. This action removes the numbering of the references, leaving only a link. Thus this action of the bot is a bug. You might like to stop the bot until this effect is removed.AKAF 11:08, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

See above; I'll rollback all the relevant edits by the bot later today and start over with a new method that maintains the fn/fnb labelling. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 12:43, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

template:book reference

May I ask: what are you trying to do with template:book reference? Can't we simply let it be defunct (=blanked) and deprecated? I deliberately didn't put it on TfD because when I did this to an another template (template:journal reference) people asked for a "history merge" — the perfect history preservation is blanking the template on the old location. So I decided to just deprecate and blank book reference once most uses had been migrated to cite book. (For example, I didn't want to migrate uses in archives or user space sandboxes). --Ligulem 19:41, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm substituting it on pages that transclude it (see diff). I got momentarily distracted by a task in real life, so the changes were less temporary than I intended. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 19:47, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
Ah, ok. Just make sure people aren't going to use that old thing again. Hmm. Interesting. You managed to subst a template that uses m:ParserFunctions? When I tried to do this, all I got was an "if" mess (see also bugzilla:2777). BTW: we now have Special:ExpandTemplates. But I'm almost sure you know all that :) --Ligulem 20:00, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

:Category:Specialised user block templates

I wanted to get your opinion on this. I think this category and all the templates in it need to be deleted. I saw it once went through a CFD once, but there was one voter and he said Keep, so it was. — Moe Epsilon 21:51 September 14 '06

I'll argue for deletion if you renominate them. The specialised block templates are redundant with the generic {{indefblock}}, which points to the blocklog for the specific reason. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 22:35, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Template:Impostor

This template was deleted because of a multi-nomination with a bunch of me-too votes that clearly did not consider, or perhaps even read, the reasons for keeping this template in an altered form. However, I am not absolutely certain of my reasoning or the possible options when dealing with ambiguous usernames.

This template is useful for establishing that a user account does not in fact belong to the real person who was imitated, in order so that it is clear that the real person was not the one actually banned. Inflammatory usernames should be dealt with in the same way as any vandalism or inappropriate username, but for ambiguous, non-inflammatory names like User:Jiang. (User:Jiang) or User:Jimmy Wales (User:Jimbo Wales), the template is appropriate at least in the medium-term for indicating that the edits of the impostor account do not belong to the impersonated person. If there are no non-deleted edits, then they can just be redirected to the real account, but if there is the possibility of someone confusing the impostor edits for being from the real person, then the impostor template is appropriate. Is this reasonable? —Centrxtalk • 18:56, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Although imposter usernames are often confusingly similar, there is rarely any chance that someone will confuse them with the real user. The facts that the user is blocked, has little or no contributions, and has no user or talk page (except an {{indefblockeduser}} tag in some cases) are clear indications of impersonation. Most edits are reverted or deleted before other users can take a closer look. Someone could conceivably follow the user link in the edit history out of curiosity, but the above points will clear any confusion.
I don't really see the point of redirecting userpages, either. Someone following the user link in the edit history will likely be confused by that, since they'll see the real user and may not notice (or understand the significance of) the redirection. If they are following a userlink, they are clearly not looking for the real user. Someone typing the username in normally is unlikely to type User:Jimbo Wales. instead of user:Jimbo Wales, and can easily correct the mistake even if they do.
One noteworthy trivium is that a Wikipedia-specific Google search for "Jimbo Wales" lists eight imposters in the top ten results, all of which are easily confused with the real userpage from the Google results page. I think the best option when dealing with imitation usernames is to quickly block them and revert any edits. If the user managed to make many edits (thus attracting more curious visitors), confusion can be alleviated with an informative block summary and a indefinitely blocked notice on the user's talk page. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 00:30, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
Someone who types "User:Jimmy Wales" should in some way be directed to Jimbo's user page rather than left at the impostor's talk page and contributions. If there are no contributions from the user, then a redirect would be the way. If there are contributions, then, to avoid someone who click on the name or signature thinking they were by the real person, the impostor template would tell them . I do not mean for names like Jimbo Wales on Wheels, which no one is going to type in and few are going to be confused by. Also, shouldn't the user page be deleted for such cases to rid it from Google, so that indefblocked should not be used either? —Centrxtalk • 17:59, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
Also, while it may be clear to anyone that Jimbo has not been blocked, for some relatively unknown editor with a typo username it is not. —Centrxtalk • 18:01, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
The redirect causes confusion when someone follows a link, and is unneeded when a user types it in (they'll easily find the mistake). I do understand your argument, though; maybe likely typos (excluding similar usernames that one is unlikely to type accidentally) could have a phrase along the lines of "You may be looking for User:Jimbo Wales." Such pages should ideally be categorised, so that they're not orphaned and lost.
Userpages for indefinitely blocked users are temporary (in theory); however, that attitude is relatively new on Wikipedia, and many old userpages remain. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 23:27, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: Poetry category

Please do not recreate :Category:Poetry since it is redundant with :Category:Poems (see the discussion choosing "Poems" over "Poetry"). On a related note, I'm curious as to why you categorised “Out, Out—” to both Poetry and Poems. ;) // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 16:44, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Whoops, seems like I was a little overzealous here. My thinking was that :Category:Poetry should be a subcategory of :Category:Works by genre and :Category:Poems should be a subcategory of :Category:Works by type. I didn't think of both categories having the same members due to the very definition of poetry. Actually, now that you gave me the link, I even remember the discussion. Sorry, I had completely forgotten. Well, I'll add :Category:Poems to :Category:Works by genre. BTW, there are no such things as category redirects, are there?--GrafZahl 20:39, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Although redirects will work normally on category pages, pages categorised to a redirect category won't be recategorised. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 20:51, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Mark Foley instant message chats with Congressional page

Whoops, more overzealousness. The following text is fully REASONABLE as a placeholder for a page that is coming up very high on Yahoo's search results for the topic Mark Foley instant message chats with Congressional page. I hope that you'll carefully consider this reasonable compromise.

Proposed text:

Wikisource is not a link farm and follows strict copyright rules.

However, this Wikisource page is indexed very highly on the Yahoo results page and it pertains to a crucial subject within the domain of current events and is of vital interest to the American people, on par with the Monica Lewinsky affair.

Accordingly, until more information is made available, the following links are provided, in the public interest. Please contribute your DIRECT information on the situation, in order to improve the quality and accuracy of the page. Thank you.

Wikisource's mission is to archive the artistic and intellectual works created throughout history, not to increase its search engine rank or provide useful links. Editing

dashes

Do you know anything authorative about preferences for em-dashes being an American vs British issue? Or is it just just modern to use them and old fashioned to use en-dashes? Or do you think we should not worry about it and just use em-dashes. I am having trouble finding much information.--BirgitteSB 03:09, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

From the limited research I did—with no authoritative results—it would seem that the British convention is to use em dashes with spaces or hair spaces. I've created {{}} for the hair space variant, and added it to A Drink Problem, which you've contributed. You're probably more familiar with British conventions than I am, so feel free to review it. ;) // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 03:57, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the work on A Drink Problem, I don't think the em dahes you've added have come out as intended. On the article and {{}} they've come out surrounded by wee boxes ( — ). I'm assuming this is a computer character recognition problem as I've never seen this in any printed form. Generally where a longer em dash is used there doesn't seem to be any British standard usage on spaces or not. Hansard uses em dash without spaces, the times uses it with spaces (when they don't use - ). I think Hansard sources the em dash could be useful but we'd need to get rid of the wee boxes. AllanHainey 11:38, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Over at WP I asked a British editor about the issue. Here is a link to the clarification w:User talk:Shantavira#Em-dashes.--BirgitteSB 17:05, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
It seems there's little consensus, then. Various websites I've consulted seem to recommend the em dash. For example, Wikipedia, dictionary.com, and A List Apart note that en dashes are for linking ranges or particular compound words (ie, 1920–1930 or Asia–Pacific alliance). The same sites recommend em dashes to "indicate a break in thought or sentence structure, to introduce a phrase added for emphasis, definition, or explanation, or to separate two clauses (dictionary.com).
The most common British usage seems to be em dashes, either spaced or unspaced. Hair spaces (as used by {{}}) seem to be a good compromise; they are often used in British texts, and they aren't much different from unspaced usage. According to A List Apart, though, rendering hair spaces on the web is problematic; they don't seem to be defined in HTML. For technical reasons, then, it might be better to use em dashes without spaces. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 21:01, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

HTML to wikiML

Hello Politicaljunkie. Please note that automatically converting HTML to wikiML can have unintended consequences; for example, your bot converted an italic phrase to bold in Bright's Anglo-Saxon Reader. Some texts use HTML italic tags to italicise multiple lines; converting these directly into wikiML will only italicise the first line. Please semiautomate these, check all changes, or refine your regex to prevent such problems.

Quintus Cicero

I tagged it along with dozens of other userpages while reviewing my bot's edits, intending to sort through them later. A closer look shows my initial concern was unfounded, so I removed the deletion tag. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 21:30, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

delete

You added {{delete}} to a lot of pages, but there are no pages at deletion review on those, and no explanations for what this is. Can you explain what this is all about ? Thanks.Wjhonson 06:33, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

I added those while reviewing my bot's edits; I simply haven't gotten around to sorting through them and completing the nominations yet. :) // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 15:55, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
{{delete}} tag on Author:Émile Nelligan. This has to be a mistake by the bot. It fail to see any possible reason for adding this tag, especially since you actually worked on it just before. I am the person who worked on it using IPs 69.159.232.82 and 74.56.203.49 . -- Mathieugp 04:53, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
But the issue really is, *why* did you add the delete tag? And not only was it added, but the deletion page did not have an entry so there was no way to discuss the tag. Wjhonson 01:37, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
Mathieugp, I apologize for not responding sooner. I originally intended to nominate it for deletion because we had no works by this author, but I decided that deleting such pages would delete a very good starting point for adding the works. Thus, I removed the deletion tag and created :Category:Authors with no works.
I understand. The complete peoms of Nelligan were published in English translation by Fred Cogswell in 1983. However, there is also Selected Poems by Émile Nelligan, P.F. Widdows, Toronto, Ryerson, 1960. Canadian copyright law is enforced for 50 years, so in 4 years we will be able to copy all those selected poems without asking. :-) -- Mathieugp 17:03, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
Wjhonson, I placed deletion nomination tags because I had intended to sort them out and start the discussions that day. Unfortunately, the sheer number of pages that were eventually tagged (given that I checked every author page on Wikisource) made that process very tedious, so that I pushed the task back a few days while I did other tasks. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 02:21, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Author Template

Hi Pathoschild. I created a different version of bookofjude's template and posted it in the poll late. Perhaps it shows up abnormally on some browsers or maybe just no one was interested, but no one commented on it. I wanted to make sure that if bookofjude's is the prefered template, that it is prefered with all other options visible and known. Thanks, —Antireconciler 21:55, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

I closed the poll seven days after you proposed your synthesis. Although I think that's enough time for everyone involved to see it, feel free to note it on the author template talk page where discussion is ongoing. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 14:40, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
No, it's okay if no one is interested. I'm just surprised to not get feedback. What I do seems to be for my own viewing pleasure, but that's never stopped me. Thanks, —Antireconciler 06:34, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
You're welcome; your proposal didn't generate any feedback because most users had already cast their vote. Users tend to stick to their decision once its made, and rarely change their votes. You could try proposing it again in a few months, when we finish converting all pages to the new version; the parameters are not incompatible, so it would be much easier to switch. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 11:36, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

:Category:Works by era

Any objection to switching this to :Category:Works by year? I've imported Template:workyr from w:en for our purposes, and originally I was thinking that we could organize all of the years within decades and then all the decades within the eras you've defined. But I thought that perhaps the "eras" are subjective and that thus it might be best to just use a pure year system, like the en categories (:w:en:Category:19th century works, :w:en:Category:1850s works, :w:en:Category:1857 works). Thoughts? --Spangineerwp (háblame) 22:43, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

I have no objection; I proposed a similar system by century at "Standardise eras" (Scriptorium, June 2006). // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 22:49, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Importing from WP

Hi, Pathoschild,

I just imported a speech and its talk page a few minutes ago. The page I transwiki'd was to be moved to WS. However, I don't know the procedure on WP for pages that have been moved. Do I add a speedy delete template or make a note on a page somewhere? The pages in question are Sun Yat Sen's speech on Pan-Asianism and w:Sun Yat Sen's speech on Pan-Asianism.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 13:50, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Technically, the move must be the result of a deletion discussion for it to be speedy-deletable. However, just place {{db-reason|[[m:Transwiki|]]ed to "[[s:blah]]" on Wikisource}} and it'll be deleted. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 23:19, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Wikisource:Image use policy

I've updated the proposed image policy to reflect some of your suggestions, as well as some from the folks over at commons. I move the image tutorial stuff to Help:Adding images, and I softened the language of the requirement—now material intended for use here only may be uploaded here. I also changed what you had recommended for naming and organizing guidelines after discussion with people at Commons. Please review those if you get a chance. Specifying the language was added as a requirement to ensure that for example Oliver Twist could be uploaded in various languages. Anything else you notice that might be improved? --Spangineerwp (háblame) 22:26, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Bots

I was reading over WS:BOTS and the first line says a few things about semi-automatic editing, which got me thinking—if I'm just using AWB as a tool to make editing faster, should I have a bot account? Sometimes I use it just because it automatically loads the next page on the list (while I edit like normal; for example, copy/pasting headers and then making modifications), and other times I have it do search/replace. Other than the first sentence I don't see mention of semi-automatic editing tools, so I thought I'd go to the writer of the policy and ask =). --Spangineerwp (háblame) 00:26, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

That depends on how you're using the tool. If the bot is editing rapidly and nearly automatically, it'd be best to have a bot account so that the edits don't clutter the edit log. If you're just using it to navigate among a list of pages while you do most of the work, it'd be better not to have a bot account so that others can see your edits. Perhaps we should add a short paragraph to the policy about semi-automatic tools. :) // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 14:53, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
