AJAX transclusion table bug

The following discussion is marked as answered (see rewrite task). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

I think I found a bug with the AJAX transclusion table script when using Chrome for a browser. I made the needed changes to common.js and I tested it in IE firefox and chrome, IE failed as you said, Firefox works perfectly so I know that the script is getting loaded, however in Chrome when I click show all the text is garbled into symbols, here is the page that I was working on, and for you're info I'm using Chrome 4.0.245.0 any help you can give would be greatly appreciated, this is a really cool script. Redekopmark 20:15, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Edit: forgot to say that the script works fine with chrome on the wikimedia site Redekopmark 20:16, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
I've created a task to rewrite AJAX transclusion table, which will resolve your problem. —Pathoschild 05:17:25, 04 April 2011 (UTC)

Bug in CrossActivity script?

The following discussion is marked as answered (not trivial to filter based on local settings). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hi there. Your CrossActivity script apparently categorizes all user right changes as bureaucrat actions instead of admin actions (for example it shows my last crat action to be on 20091106 despite not being a crat). Would it be possible for the script to distinguish between user rights that can only be granted by crats (sysop, crat, bot) and those that can be granted by admins? Regards SoWhy 13:36, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello SoWhy. The tool will only show last bureaucrat actions for current bureaucrats, but unfortunately it's not trivial to filter based on local settings. —Pathoschild 03:13:54, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Multiple accounteligibility

The following discussion is marked as answered (resolved by planned API). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hi, Pathos, what about adding to the AccountEligibility tool the possibility to check a list of usernames and produce a list of eligible and not eligible ones? In that way, it would be possibile to check all the voters of a given vote in a single click. --Nemo 09:27, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm working on a new framework for my tools that will provide an API for each tool. Once that is implemented, writing a simple script to query the API will be easy. —Pathoschild 20:18:34, 04 March 2010 (UTC)

ls-testanalysis broken

The following discussion is marked as answered (file bug report if it still occurs). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hallo! Your ls-testanalysis was a really great tool - as long, as it worked good. Now however there is a blackshield over it... - could you plese have a look for it? Thanks! --Skipper Michael 01:10, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

That script has been replaced by catanalysis. I've marked it as being obsolete. —Pathoschild 20:16:59, 04 March 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I've just tested and found results between appr. 150 % and 250 %. Unfortunately it seems, as if counting might bring about 100 %. Do you think, that there could bee still an other bug? --Skipper Michael 14:06, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
I do not understand what you mean; that script does not output percentages. —Pathoschild 19:11:09, 06 March 2010 (UTC)
No, of course it does not output percentages. What I mean is, that it says 250 edits, if I have only 100 edits. And the difference in percents is growing with the absolut number: 7 = 7, 20 -> 30, 100 -> 250 (not exactly, just about) - sorry for my bad English. --Skipper Michael 23:35, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
If you can still reproduce the issue, please create a bug report and provide a link to the incorrect result. —Pathoschild 19:13:18, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Summary on Oscar's confirmation

The following discussion is marked as answered (overall stance already indicated). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

[1] - it states that I am concerned. I mentioned that I would like him to be more active, but I begin with "I would like oscar to be confirmed because his talents are necessary." Perhaps there could be a middle ground section with inactivity a concern but not enough to not support? Ottava Rima (talk) 21:37, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

By the way, I'm in the positive section also. I was just thinking about having a third option for "I understand others thinking it is a problem but I don't"? Just something to think about in the future. Ottava Rima (talk) 21:39, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
Hi Ottava. I used the /okay template to indicate concerned-but-favourable. Would it help if I added a legend explaining the formatting? For example:
Coloured and underlined names below have notes attached. Move your cursor onto the names to show the notes. Possible notes:
  • Concerned, but still favours confirmation.
  • Agrees with this point, but opposes confirmation.
  • Agrees with this point, but is neutral.
Pathoschild 23:03:05, 04 March 2010 (UTC)
I haven't a clue. Ask the stewards, it is for their benefit, after all. :) I just wanted to point out the above as a possible thing to find a way to ensure that there wasn't any confusion. Ottava Rima (talk) 23:07, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Might I suggest having all the documentation on Template:Bar/documentation and transcluded in a noinclude'd section on each variant of the template, rather than giving each template its own documentation section? I would think (but could be wrong!) that this would ease documentation efforts. Sukida 17:41, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Sukida. The template is still experimental and largely unwritten. I'll set up the documentation properly when it's done. —Pathoschild 17:43:45, 05 March 2010 (UTC)

Sj summary

The following discussion is marked as answered. If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Regarding the summary for Sj I'm listed under "active enough; frequently comments on stewards-l". For obvious reasons that doesn't quite make sense since I'm not under stewards-l. My comment only uses the "active enough" part not the second claim. JoshuaZ 21:54, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello Joshua. I grouped similar reasons together in the summaries. In this case, everyone listed agrees that Sj is active enough — and a few also noted his activity on the mailing list as a supporting detail. Does that make sense? —Pathoschild 00:17:18, 08 March 2010 (UTC)
Yep. No worries then. JoshuaZ 00:29, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello Pathoschild, I've discovered that the bot policy was proposed on an.wiktionary by Spacebirdy one year ago, but nobody commented on it. Blocked IP 85.17.19.195

The following discussion is marked as answered (web proxies blocked on sight). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hi, why did you block the IP 85.17.19.195? The log just says "crosswiki abuse, web proxies" which basically doesn't give any information about any incidents. What happened? --85.17.19.195 17:50, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello 85.17.19.195. Web proxies are blocked on sight, because they are frequently abused to circumvent blocks. In this case, it was abused for crosswiki vandalism. —Pathoschild 00:01:55, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately the User .snoopy. was not so kind to answer, but instead deleted my comment on this talk page and even renewed the block without any comment!! Anyway... the block of the proxy is not really a problem for me, whenever I log in I can still do edits. The problem is rather that only open proxies should be blocked - but my proxy is not supposed to be open, but is only used by myself to circumvent some restrictions of my Internet connection. If it is really open or has even been used for vandalism (which equally means that it was/is open, as I haven't committed any vandalism), I would like to know that. So it would be nice, if you could point out particular edits (with time and IP) that were identified as vandalism and explain what makes you think that this IP is an open proxy. --85.17.19.195 09:41, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Your personal web proxy is fine, but unfortunately there are others who are more abusive. The entire web host is blocked, not only the address of the server you edit through. However, the block is anonymous-only to allow legitimate users to log in and edit. —Pathoschild 14:00:09, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
When you say "the entire web host", you refer to the IP range of a certain subnet? So it wasn't exactly my IP? --85.17.19.195 14:48, 30 March 2010
You were affected by a global block on 85.17.0.0/16, which affects 85.17.0.0 through 85.17.255.255. —Pathoschild 15:07:51, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

193.104.159.132 blocked as web proxy

The following discussion is marked as answered (local block). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

I tried to create a unified account 'Amedee' on en.wikipedia.org, but this failed for nl.wikipedia.org and meta.wikimedia.org. So I'm forced to use anonymous access on nl.wikipedia.org. The site blocks me because of alledged open proxy. I claim that this is not correct. Below is the relevant part of my squid.conf, as proof that my proxy is not open:

acl all src all
acl manager proto cache_object
acl localhost src 127.0.0.1/32
acl to_localhost dst 127.0.0.0/8
acl localnet src 10.0.0.0/8 # RFC1918 possible internal network
acl localnet src 172.16.0.0/12 # RFC1918 possible internal network
acl localnet src 192.168.0.0/16 # RFC1918 possible internal network
acl SSL_ports port 443 # https
acl Safe_ports port 80 # http
acl Safe_ports port 443 # https
acl purge method PURGE
acl CONNECT method CONNECT
http_access allow manager localhost
http_access deny manager
http_access allow purge localhost
http_access deny purge
http_access deny !Safe_ports
http_access deny CONNECT !SSL_ports
http_access allow localhost
http_access deny all

As you can clearly see, only local hosts on my network can use the proxy, and the only local hosts are the computers that I currently work on, who connect to my personal proxy server over an ssh or openvpn tunnel. The count is currently 3, with only one physical person (me) using the proxy.

Is this enough evidence to get the error message "Uw IP-adres is door Pathoschild (meta.wikimedia.org) geblokkeerd op alle wiki's. De reden is "web proxy, crosswiki abuse". De blokkade vervalt op 10 aug 2010 om 02:16." removed on the IP address 188.40.34.110? For the record: I'm now accessing this page unproxied. 193.104.159.132 12:18, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Crosswiki vandal deletion in zh-yue wikipedia

The following discussion is marked as answered (articles created by banned user who adds machine translations, copyright violations, and unreferenced information crosswiki (as well as vandalism)). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

I noticed you have deleted a number of articles due to cross wiki vandalism. From my observations, one article may start as a vandalism but after a number of users improved on it. It does not look like vandal article anymore. Second, some articles, as far as my concern, contain valid content (redirect). --WikiCantona (talk) --WikiCantona 01:45, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello Cantona. I checked their article histories and did not delete those that have been significantly improved by legitimate editors. However, the banned user tends to use many accounts that appear legitimate; I remove his additions because he uses these to add machine translations, copyright violations, and unreferenced information crosswiki (as well as vandalism).
Feel free to recreate redirects or articles with any legitimate content they contain, although it may be better to start from a verified source like another wiki rather than his edits. —Pathoschild 02:08:18, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your quick reply. Since the mass delete of articles seldom happens with other admin from meta, I must inquire for the reasons. thank you for your reply. The redirects in zh-yue is rather unconventional in the sense of English wikipedia, we allows basically any language title to be created and redirect to. The (apparently vandal-like) multiple redirects to single title are all valid, we will not interfere with that. Feel free to continue your work against the vandals but please be sure that they are real vandals. Thank you. --WikiCantona 07:58, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Regex menu framework: vector

The following discussion is marked as answered (Regex menu framework replaced by Vector-compatible TemplateScript). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hello!

I would like to suggest the addition of some classes for better consistency with vector skin? I've added the following to my function rmflinks() at pt.wikibooks:

	var r = document.getElementById('p-regex')
	if (r){
		r.className += ' portal'
		var d = r.getElementsByTagName('div')
		if (d[0]) d[0].className += ' pBody body'
	}

Maybe there is a better place to put it, and the change could be made in your js.

What do you think? Helder 02:00, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello Helder. Vector compatibility is best written into the script itself, but I'm unfortunately too busy right now to work on this. If you'd like to modify the script for compatibility (or other improvements), feel free to send me the modified version and I'll update it with full credit to you. (The full source code is at User:Pathoschild/Scripts/Regex menu framework.js.) —Pathoschild 05:45:28, 08 May 2010 (UTC)
I apologyze for intrusion; I solved some issue of vector display adding these rows into my vector.css:
div.p-body ul{list-style:none;list-style-image:none;list-style-type:none;padding:0;margin:0;}
div.p-body ul li{line-height:1.125em;padding:0;padding-bottom:0.5em;margin-left:1.25em;overflow:hidden;font-size:0.75em}
div.portlet h5 {line-height:1.125em;padding:0;padding-bottom:0.5em;margin-left:1.25em;overflow:hidden;font-size:0.75em}
I guess something better could be written, and I'll appreciate any suggestion. --Alex brollo 08:03, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

Cross wiki abuse

As a sysop of Cantonese Wikipedia, I am not happy about your lock of Cantonese Wikipedia user happy. According to our local record of this user [7] is mostly constructive contributions. I am here to ask your to provide a record this user cross abuse record to justify your lock. If you don't have any evident to justify your action, I would ask your revise the lock--WikiCantona 01:16, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Hello WikiCantona. His focus on Disney-related articles and his edit to User_talk:Pathoschild demonstrate that this is the user known as BambiFan (zh:维基百科:当前的破坏/IHATEteletubbies!). This user tends to mix constructive edits with copyright violations, unreferenced information, machine translations, and vandalism, possibly to encourage tolerance of his non-constructive edits. The pages I have linked to provide more details about why I blocked his "Happy" account.
This is the second time you have objected to actions against this user on the Cantonese wiki. I am happy to explain any of my actions on request, but please let me know if you prefer that I take no action on that wiki. —Pathoschild 01:44:43, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
We, Cantonese Wikipedia, is small wikipedia project. As a sysop, I try my best to maintain the wiki. With limited time at hand, I and other sysops will not possible protect the project all the time. Hence, you and other people from meta really help us a lot. This is an undeniable fact which I owe much gratitude.
On the other hand, as raise this question before. If a user who proven to be cross wiki vandal while maintain mostly constructive contribution toward a local wikipedia, should you ban that user for life? From a local point of view, I did not see any justification for such harsh punishment. Second, I've paid much attention recently, that particular user zh-yue:User:Happy has tried to be constructive. He or she may have fraud against some people in meta. If one assumes a user to destructive and unchanged and must deal with heavy hand, I can see such user may just behave badly. For this user [:zh-yue:Happy], I would once again ask you to revise the lock. If he or she starts to behave badly, I will lock him or her out at first sign. Finally, please understand Chinese Wikipedia and Cantonese Wikipedia is completely separate wiki, Chinese Wikipedia's records and their actions are not more relevant than that of Thai or Spanish Wikipedia. Thank you for understanding --WikiCantona 03:55, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
I agree with your reasoning; there is no opposition to allowing this user to edit productively. His accounts are typically left alone so long as they are not abusive, but as you can see he tends to resume abuse. However, as a local administrator you know best how to administrate the wiki. Please feel free to overturn my block on that wiki if you disagree with it. —Pathoschild 02:06:01, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Problem about Global user pages

First, thank you for the unification (in my user preferences, I see that my account is active in 671 project sites). "Western" Punjabi Wikipedia

The following discussion is marked as answered (forwarded to the committee). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

To Whom it May Concern,

I recently noticed a Wiktionary incubator under the name "Western" Punjabi on Meta; as well as a Wikipedia under the same name that had been approved. I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that, while the language above exists, these projects are not written in this language, rather they are written in the Lahori sub-dialect of Eastern Punjabi; with the only real difference of being written in the Arabic script. Indeed, I transliterated the article on Lahore from the "Western" Punjabi Wikipedia to the Eastern Punjabi one, and it worked fine. It worked fine, and since I can read both scripts, I can tell you that this is not the language it claims to be. It is a shame, because those who actually speak that language will not be able to run a Wikipedia now. Please don't approve the Wiktionary at least, without confirming the language it is written in.

Many Thanks.

Hej Pathoschild!

I know that You, in a bot-like manner, are adding userpages on a large number of wikis.

I am an old-fashioned middle-aged man who prefer to have things as they allways has been. Therefor I have reinstalled monobook (together with the old kind of editbox) on my projects (s:sv:, w:sv: and commons: and a few others).

I often visitsother projects, to collect information of different kind: check iw-bot-activity, sometimes to track vandalism and of course, reading those languages I understand (en, no/nn, da, nds and other close neighbours). It would therefor be of help, if You have som kind of software that can help me re-install monobook again on all WMF-projects. (To some extent maybe also for my bot.)

Best Regards! -- Lavallen 17:03, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

CrossActivity

The following discussion is marked as answered (implemented sorting & filtering, statistics in a future version). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hi, Pathos, on your wonderful CrossActivity tool, I have some suggestions which i hope make sense. First, I would like to be able to filter listed wikis by domain (i.e. only Wikiquote, only Wikisource and so on) to check the cross-language activity on a specific project (useful e.g. to check whether a [global] bot is active on Wikiquote or Wikipedia or Wiktionary etc.). Second, and less important, it could be nice if the tool produced some numbers to evaluate how much "cross-project" the activity is, like number of wikis with some activity, number of wikis with recent edit/log action, "total edits (and log events) on 5 wikis where the user has more edits / total global edits (and log events)" ratio (or a more complex figure). --Nemo 01:42, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Nemo. I improved Crossactivity since you posted your comment, including a new 'family' column (for sorting) and a search box (for filtering). The statistics are beyond the scope of the tool as it is currently written, but I'll keep your suggestions in mind when I rewrite it for my newer framework. —Pathoschild 01:33:57, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Thank you so much for your help. I'm a bit embarrassed because when I checked the content I realized that the copy I kept is of an earlier version and that's one of the reasons why I appreciate so much what you did. The problem is that it gets worse... I could swear there was some material on the discussion page. I believe it was the initial results of my search for cases where the use of the term "livre" had been misinterpreted and generated some confusion. It is empty now and (I know this doesn't sound good) I can't find any copy of that material. I guess with all the request concerning that page I wasn't expecting to loose it's content.

Anyway, could you please check if there was some material on the discussion page? At this point, do whatever is easier for you. You're even welcome to e-mail me whatever you find. I don't think it is fair to take more of your time.

It will break offcourse, could you please tell me how you always did things like that?

Escape the quotation marks in your text (change ' to \'), change the quotation character (set_text = "importScriptUri('...');"), or use the options to fetch the text from a wiki page. —Pathoschild 17:38:37, 03 August 2010 (UTC)

bug in Catanalysis?

The following discussion is marked as answered (fixed). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hello, Pathoschild.

I've been adding Manchu articles to multilingual Wikisource, but they don't show up correctly in Catanalysis. There are currently 14 articles in the category ᠮᠠᠨᠵᡠ ᡤᡳᠰᡠᠨ, including the subcategory Manchu. However, Catanalysis only lists 9 articles under ᠮᠠᠨᠵᡠ ᡤᡳᠰᡠᠨ. The 5 articles that have been left out are exactly the ones with titles not written in the Latin alphabet. Under ᠮᠠᠨᠵᡠ_ᡤᡳᠰᡠᠨ, Catanalysis correctly lists all 14 articles, but again ignores the 5 articles with non-Latin titles in the "new pages" count of the "edits per month" section. Could you look into this problem? Thank you. Dalt 00:44, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

This is now fixed. It was caused by a category name encoding issue with the Wikimedia Toolserver s3 server (including wikisource.org), which has a latin1 collation instead of UTF8. Thanks for reporting it. —Pathoschild 23:55:47, 07 August 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for fixing half of the problem and for the explanation. The count of "new pages" is still incorrect. For example, the article ᠰᠠᠨ ᡯᡳ ᡤᡳᠩ ᠨᡳ ᠪᡳᡨᡥᡝ was created in July 2010, while the number of "new pages" of that month given by Catanalysis is 0. Dalt 12:13, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Fixed; it was caused by category name corruption due to PHP's ucFirst function, which is not Unicode-aware. —Pathoschild 16:26:28, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Unblock proceedings at Wikibooks

The following discussion is marked as answered (whether to unblock is up to the local community). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

To inform you that a user (blocked by you) has requested an unblock.

As per your block comment, a discussion has been taking place at Wikibooks:Reading room/General regarding the subject (you should read it before taking any action).

As the acting admin (by way of the steward flag) on this matter you may wish to take part on the discussion regarding the block and on the process for unblock as to help the community to better understand the situation before a decision is made.

Thanks. --Panic 15:01, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. I have no objection to any action taken by local consensus. —Pathoschild 15:45:09, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
(Examine this post). Can you comment if indeed the alteration was an error and are you willing to reverse it as to remove the burden of the block from the local community, if in fact the user has been globally banned, we shouldn't be locally involved in addressing actions outside of our sphere of influence. Locally the user has been found as not being in violation of any of our rules, even recognized as a productive Wikibookian and the community by the local decision process found that the block should be removed. This resolution has been actively and mostly unilaterally fought by your fellow steward as he is also a local admin,CU (self suspended) and bureaucrat. Resulting in a reversal of another admin that attempted to regularize the situation and creating general havoc, even in violation of local policies governing admin blocks. --Panic 02:53, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Hello Panic. Mike's statements reflect his personal opinion; there is no steward consensus in favour of enforcing the ban in this way. My conversion of the global lock into local blocks was supported by steward discussion, although Mike is free to see it as a mistake. —Pathoschild 13:42:00, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Ok, we already had figured out that the global lock tool had been abused, since it clearly was not designed for that function, we even looked into the page's history regarding the tool's use. But that is not a problem for Wikibooks to deal with (in fact it seems strange that no discussion is occurring on the pages that deal with the tool, I think the rest of the meta community would have a thing or two to say about it).
By your reply "of enforcing the ban", means that a ban is in effect (and only the enforcement is under contention) is this correct? Can you point me to the consensus regarding the ban ?
At Wikibooks the feeling is that we would require a WMF determination that (at least) Wikibooks should enforce the ban (as a local block). This has been requested several times from Mike without any result... --Panic 18:43, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Disabling translit?

The following discussion is marked as answered (ideal solution is standardization, list of implementations needed). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

I notice that a large number of sites use translit.js (example), but for those of us leaving "Congrats, you're now a sysop!" and similar messages, it's a bit of a pain.

I figured maybe I could set a variable in my global.js or pre-define one of the procedure names so it would error out. Any ideas? Kylu 20:56, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

The order in which scripts are loaded is not guaranteed, so you can't overwrite functions or change the transliteration script's checkbox. The ideal solution would be a default-value variable standardized across transliteration scripts, which can be set in a user's scripts. Is there a list of translit.js implementations available? —Pathoschild 14:14:11, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Question: how is it "a bit of a pain" if there is a checkbox right there? It needs to start from a new line on the &section=new, but that's another issue. -AlexSm 14:37, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Dear Pathoschild,

As usual I found them after a deep scrutiny into many Wikipedias, and I can grant completeness as far as level 0/1/2/3 and N are concerned, but some templates may lack level 4. I don't create templates if I don't find at least levels 0/1/2/3 and N. I'm glad if this can help you. - εΔω 15:09, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Your crosswiki changes on behalf of Trần Nguyễn Minh Huy

User pages at nl.wiktionary

I just deleted a user page you created for a Vietnamese user at our wiktionary. While we wholeheartedly welcome foreign users at our wikionary, it would be nice if they would respect our local customs. Yes there are local babel categories, no we do not need an anglophone version forced down our throat by 'users' that do not even grace us by their presence ever.

69.134.250.149 17:14, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello Jcwf. Is this about the English categories in particular, or would you prefer I skip nl-Wiktionary for future requests? —Pathoschild 17:22:02, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Categories

Hi

Nice service you have, but is it wise to add categories like you did in this case? On svwp the categories don't have the same name as on enwp, and I assume that most language versions use categories that reflect their own language. I've changed on svwp, but the other language versions should IMHO be changed as well, either by the user who asked you to add them or even better if you can automatically remove the categories. Pillerillern 09:21, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Hello Pillerillern. I'll make sure to warn against categories next time a user makes that mistake, but this particular case is entirely up to Trần Nguyễn Minh Huy, since they are his user pages and he specified the text to place. I don't mind doing it again without categories (or using the local templates when they exist), if he wants to submit a new request. —Pathoschild 02:39:41, 02 September 2010 (UTC)

Hey, I'm not Pathoschild, but I know he's been having some intermittent internet troubles, so I thought I'd respond here. :-) Usually logos are located at File:Wiki.png on the local wiki, and that's also where swwiki has it. Oversight at nds.wp

The following discussion is marked as answered (oversights target crosswiki attacks). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hi Pathoschild , you are listed as a steward and should thus have access to the oversight logs. We had several oversights at nds.wp recently (something which has never occured before as far as I know). And nobody knows what is going on. I guess it's nothing to worry about. But it would be nice to know for sure. What's the reason for the sudden increase of oversight actions visible at RecentChanges? Are we under attack or did these also happen before and it's just a change in configuration that makes them more visible? --::Slomox:: >< 21:38, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Hello Slomox. The hidden revisions you see in recent changes are attacks against various users. The sudden increase is due to one active crosswiki vandal using ndswiki as their platform. I need your help. I've been having a rash of Personal attackes being said against me, and a case of vandalism. The PAs not only apply to me but to you as well. I was trying to get a block request out for user:Bittmapped, but it was remove as well as responce to a comment that had nothing to that block request. I know who vandalised my talk page if you need that info. I'm not sure what to do. If you can stop theese users it would be appriciated. SchoolcraftT 13:32, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello SchoolcraftT. You can request help at Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat. —Pathoschild 19:11:30, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
I tried that, but I'm now under the threat of a block here, the ball is in your court. These attacks on me has resulted in the revocation of my commons talk page. I afraid the ony possible way to stop this is to unblock me from the affected projects, it maybe the only way but I'm open for suggestions on how to stop theese things from happening again. SchoolcraftT 12:41, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Someone has compleately blanked the Request of help from a sysop or burecrat page, please respond ASAP. SchoolcraftT 16:23, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
The section does not appear to be blanked.
Local administrators are normally responsible for managing blocks on their wikis; if you have been blocked or threatened with blocks by different administrators on several wikis, you should examine their reasoning. Can you modify your behaviour to address their concerns? For example, copyright policies are an important part of the Commons project and should not be ignored. —Pathoschild 18:08:27, 02 February 2011 (UTC)
Last time I looked it was, unless I was seing th ings.By the way the admins concerns have been addressed, and the behaviors will follow suit.SchoolcraftT 19:50, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
I do have a consern of my own, If I am unblocked, is there a possibility that the block is resinstated even if I didnt do anything out of the ordinary, and how can we stop PAs before they surface. 22:52, 2 February 2011 (UTC)~
There is little we can do to prevent personal attacks before they occur. Different wikis have different attitudes and processes, but typically personal attacks are removed and the poster blocked if necessary. You yourself may be blocked again in the future, in which case you should discuss with the local administrators or community to resolve the dispute. —Pathoschild 18:21:02, 05 February 2011 (UTC)
Is it possible to reduce the time frame of my block to its original state (48 hrs) or elimate it all together? Respond ASAP.SchoolcraftT18:21:02, 05 February 2011 (UTC)

It appers that the Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat page has been blanked again. it appears that there might be a problem with the page itself. Respond asap. SchoolcraftT4

The page has not been blanked. If you are occasionally seeing a completehere is whatly white page with no user interface, this is an error with the MediaWiki software. why is this marked as "answered" when you haven't ansered my questtion about block reduction? SchoolcraftT 21:40, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

I cannot help you reduce your block length; you must speak to the local administrators or community. —Pathoschild 22:04:58, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
until I get my talk pages restored, I can't do it. If you can restore them then I can. 00:17, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
That is up to local administrators. Unfortunately you seem to have exhausted your avenues of communication — both on-wiki and off-wiki. Threatening administrators with unspecified action is unlikely to help, and might be an indication of why your avenues of communication were blocked in the first place. —Pathoschild 17:27:16, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
Its that why I'm upset, its not my action, but the action of others that played a roll in that and blaming me for it. This issue is harder to grasp upon than you think. Besides ilike yous said its up to local admins like yourself, but it the personal attacks upon others and self. I have to protect myseflf, if someone is offended by it, I'm sorry. It just irritating. Good evening,

Another issue for the AccountEligibility the 2011 steward elections is the lack of check for the following point: "# hold or have held administrator rights on one Wikimedia Foundation project for a period of at least three months.". --Dereckson 17:13, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Fixed. The script now says whether they're currently an administrator, but doesn't check yet when the flag was assigned. Later I'll add that functionality or link to another tool that does. Thanks for the suggestion. —Pathoschild 04:35:01, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
And links added. —Pathoschild 06:28:32, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
As of tonight's update, the tool checks the three-month requirement automatically by peeking at their rights history. —Pathoschild 06:13:06, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

The criterion stated on your tool says "has 50 edits between 01 August 2010 and 31 January 2010". Perhaps you mean 31 January 2011? --Deryck Chan 14:51, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Fixed, thank you. —Pathoschild 04:35:01, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

The tool says I am not eligible to vote or nominate because I don't have an account on Meta. Though I have. Is there something I haven't done? SilkTork 09:36, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

The tool seems to recognize your account on Meta (see result). This may have been fixed in tonight's update. —Pathoschild 06:07:04, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
Yes. Shortly after contacting you I checked again and it was fine. Thanks for looking into this. SilkTork 09:41, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Pathoschild.

Although I have no intention to nominate for a steward (and I strongly support every enthusiast who has means and time for that), I ran your script to check my eligibility for this nomination. It apparently denies me 3.5+ years of sysoping. I thought I better report that here. :o) 本 Mihajlo [ talk ] 10:31, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

wikimedia-admin

The following discussion is marked as answered. If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hello!

I've during the last few days completely cleaned out the access list of our IRC admin channel. Per this clean up, we've also updated and re-organized the on-wiki record of this channel here. This list is now exactly the same as the access list on IRC. Please always remember to update this list when making changes to the channel on IRC. It's just a reminder. Best, -Barras 12:38, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

It makes sense to have a public list of operators, so users know who to contact for access; but why do we need a manual list of users who can enter the channel? —Pathoschild 18:34:23, 06 February 2011 (UTC)
It makes it easier for us to check if we need to remove someone's access. I think it is good to have some record. -Barras 18:42, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
What do you think of having a bot regularly fetch the channel access list, and output a prettified table to the wiki page? The only human action would be adding details to its configuration, such as the names to display for each template or the on-wiki names for a given hostmask. —Pathoschild 18:48:18, 06 February 2011 (UTC)
If this is possible, I wouldn't mind. Any bot help here would be good. It is really a lot of work to compare the on-wiki list with the access list. However, if all ops there just update the on-wiki list when they make changes to the channel access, it would just work. This was the main problem, I think. -Barras 19:03, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Nguyennhu

The following discussion is marked as answered. If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

I noticed you recently blocked and locked Nguyennhu's account globally. Based on the Help Desk discussion that took place the same day, it sounds like they may not have been aware of Wikipedia's content guidelines and moved to other wikis when I and other Vietnamese Wikipedians failed to explain what the problem was.

Out of curiosity (but not necessarily in this case), is there a way for a local wiki to opt-out a user from a global block, in case the community wants to give them a second chance locally?

 – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 02:04, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Hello Minh Nguyễn. Nguyennhu is one of two accounts this person created to post the text crosswiki, in some cases overwriting existing pages. The lock was placed to prevent this activity; Nguyennhu is welcome to create a new account if he wishes to contribute more productively, or I can lift the lock if he agrees not to resume. You can circumvent a global lock by renaming the local user, which detaches it from the global account. You can then rename it to the original name; this will not re-attach it unless the user explicitly decides to do so using Special:MergeAccount. —Pathoschild 03:09:25, 07 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the information! – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 09:01, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Very nice stuff, Top Notch!

I just have a doubt: I have a block on es.wikipedia. Is not a big deal, I think I just had a disagreament with some gamer and don´t really want to push it any further. Question: I see I can raise my block. Could an extremely overzealous admin bann me again on some grounds??? Because in that case I rather not use the feature.

I would greatly apreciate your feedback on this particular. All I want is to be able to collaborate again, and next time I will be more careful with procedures.

THANKS A LOT

Hello Victor Lledó. Local administrators are responsible for managing blocks. It is possible you will be blocked again for the same reasons, though this is less likely if you address their reasons for blocking. —Pathoschild 02:30:39, 09 February 2011 (UTC)

What does it mean ?

The following discussion is marked as answered. If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

What does

"Selected enwiki_p. • does not have an account on Meta. "

mean ?

Hello 210. You chose en.wikipedia.org in AccountEligibility's drop-down list (or followed a link that selected it for you), so it selected your account in the English Wikipedia database (enwiki_p). The event you chose requires an account on meta.wikimedia.org, so it checked that and decided that you don't meet that requirement. —Pathoschild 02:49:29, 09 February 2011 (UTC)

Automatic editing X-wiki

The following discussion is marked as answered. If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

I have seen You many times adding/editing user-pages on a large number of projects.

I am trying to learn to design software to work X-wiki.

I like to know if there is any list of active projects here anywhere? I guess this list also include closed projects? I think also lists like this also include closed projects?!

And do I have to think of anything special on RTL-projects and are there languages that do not accept 'normal unicode'? -- Lavallen 19:08, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Hello Lavallen. What do you mean by an active project? If you mean wikis that are open to edits, this information is available from the toolserver database; I don't know of a tool that lists them, but I could create one if that would be useful. If you mean projects that have regular user activity, the list of small and large wikis is the closest that I know of.
There are no issues with right-to-left wikis, since the text direction change is only formatting.
The vast majority of languages for which we have wikis are supported by Unicode; I think there are a few exceptions that require special fonts, but I do not recall which ones. You can try asking this question on the Foundation-l mailing list, where someone may know.

Hi Jesse,

I vaguely remember our talk on IRC about a previous issue and you telling me something about not providing support for this script anymore, but I wanted to ask you about a possible fix anyway. The script is still popular among tr.wiki community, so a fix would be absolutely great!

Cheers

Robots without flag?

The following discussion is marked as answered (distinction between local and global bots). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hello Pathoschild

I was surprised, when I hided the robots from the list of active users on ln: and could find still 26 users with the word bot in the username. In fact also on the page with the recent changes (Mbóngwana ya nsúka), there are more and more bots there. Before I write to all them to ask them to ask for a bot flag on ln: or a global bot flag (even they have one), I am just wondering if this is possible that so many bots without a bot flag work on wikipedia.

I write to you, because, you proposed ln: in the time to accept th global bot policy (here: ln:Wikipedia:Bot). --Eruedin 08:53, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Hello Eruedin. Global bots have the same flags as local bots, but they are not actually in MediaWiki's 'bot' group. This means they are considered bots on ln:Special:RecentChanges (and other pages which check the flags), but not on ln:Special:ActiveUsers (and other pages which check the group). If you want to check whether an account has the bot flags, you can look at the automatic lists of local bots and global bots, or look at an external tool which displays both (like Stalktoy). —Pathoschild 01:57:26, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Babel system: a simpler approach

The following discussion is marked as answered (see {{user language 2}}). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Dear Pathoschild,

I read that you should already be aware of what I'm writing, but I just want to ask your opinion about a possible evolution of Template:User language system. Starting from your solution I developed a simpler approach to babel templates using labeled sections instead of template subpages. You can see it in action on vec.wikisource:

To see it operating I adopted it on my user page : vec:s:Utente:OrbiliusMagister.

  • I kept the code in user language template as simple as possible, employing common.css to manage format information and leaving out all the features you put into Template:User language.
  • In the single "message subpage"
    • I named the sections "User en-3 text" Because I dream a way to exploit the name "en-3" to revive the traditional {{Babel|en-3}} syntax, but I currently have no idea about a way to do it (I tried to load hudreds of babeltemplates on a single page with labeled sections, but I choked the system with too many parser calls).
    • I see a drawback in the huge size of the single "message subpage" (currently a beast ~200KB heavy which is going to grow) but that's the only (acceptable) glitch I see. As you are a much more experienced programmer, which I am not, and as I'm going to implement this system on both la.source and it.source I'd like to know your frank opinion about it, especially bugs or other drawbacks I couldn't see.

- εΔω 08:44, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Hello εδω. I already created a working prototype of the system you described as {{user language 2}} with a few other improvements, including the existing translations. The new system is experimentally being used through {{babelold}}.
The system is working very well overall, but I've also found the translation subpage to be a problem — MediaWiki routinely times out when attempting to save changes to the page, due to the number of <section> tags on the page (currently 2604). It parses every <section> tag and passes it to the extension callback, which simply returns a blank string to strip them. If there was a way to tell MediaWiki to simply strip the tags, instead of passing them to the extension callback, performance might improve dramatically. —Pathoschild 21:39:39, 06 March 2011 (UTC)

Yes, sure. Sorry for me slow reaction, I was editing the message.
I wanted to post it on the discussion Requests for new languages/Wikinews Croatian , but since I got a block threat a week ago - I don't want to push my luck.
In fact, this is also your area of interest. The text is in italic.
Message for the moderators of this discussion and for all others that will read and consider this page. This message might sound off-topic to some, but it's not, since it's about the user Guski2 that "voted" here (no arguments, just "yes" vote).
If you think that this message does not belong here, please, forward it on the proper place.
It is about strange edit pattern of the voter Guski2.
This proposal started on 25 March (by Anton008).
User Guski2 appeared on Wikimedia's projects after 6 months...to save Anton008/s proposal?
Before 6 months, Guski2 appeared on Wikimedia's projects solely to vote (Aug 21, 2010) on hr.wiki.[12]
Before that, he has been absent from Wikimedia's projects almost 3 years (since Oct 24, 2007)
Here are his global contribs [13]. Until now, 65 total edits, until Apr 2, 2011 - only 40 edits.
On hr.wiki, he has total of 11 edits mainspace edits [14].
His SUL [15].
What kind of user appears with edits in 2 days, than dissappears for 3 years?
What kind of newbie goes straight to Wikimedia's incubator? First edits Apr 2, 2011 [16].
4 years ago, he also appeared to "save" Anton008's work . [17] article history
Note: Anton008 is a user that has requested new project - Wikinews Croatian [18] - on which Guski2 voted "yes"...after loooong absence. That's what has drawn my attention.
Sorry for bothering you. Since this is cross-wiki thing, I believe that this goes into your area. Sincerely, Kubura 02:50, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
A simple "yes" vote will have no effect on the outcome. Requests for new language wikis are judged based on the merits of the arguments presented, and not the number of users presenting them. The current system was designed specifically to ensure that what you describe is not a problem.
If what you describe causes problems elsewhere — where decisions are made by the number of votes — you should ask for a checkuser investigation on that wiki. —Pathoschild 02:57:12, 04 April 2011 (UTC)
Well, he appeared on several projects. Local checkusers aren't able to do anything, unless the master is inexperienced.
Interesting is that he hasn't said a lot. Just a vote. Generally, he doesn't speak a lot.
I maintain Wikipedia regularly, and I assure you that after tens of thousands of patrolled edits and talks I can recognize un guignol (or a meatpuppet, at least).
Therefore, it's not the problem because he voted yes or not.
It's the problem that such user has appeared on voting.... after looong absence.
Such "votes" create the artificial support, the illusion of a support to the particular attitude.
Because of all this, I wanted to draw your (steward's) attention on such user. Thank you for reading this. Bye, Kubura 03:39, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
