A post graduate in English Literature, Salil Gewali rose to fame for his excellent publication of his book entitled ‘What Is India?’ which has already earned worldwide appreciation. The book that was released by the Governor of Meghalaya Shri R. S. Mooshahary in 2009 is now going to be translated into Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Hindi and Nepali. It is certainly a pride for the country as a whole that one scholar from USA is considering to publish this booklet from Georgia too.

The book is the compilation of quotes of the world renowned intellectual giants on ancient Indian classical wisdom. Quotes of great minds like - Albert Einstein, Mark Twain , T. S. Eliot, Julius Robert Oppenheimer - father of Atomic bomb, George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, Ralph Emerson, Voltaire, Friedrich Hegel, Werner Heisenberg (co-founder of Quantum Physics), Henry David Thoreau are so thought-provoking that reflect that the western scholars were deeply awestruck by the rich wisdom of the ancient India. Many intellectuals from across the world have highly applauded his book. Prof. A. V. Murali, an internally acclaimed former NASA scientist in his comment says- ‘What is India?’ is simply outstanding! I never knew that such a compilation exists and we all should be thankful to Salil Gewali ! These great quotes should be embossed (on plaques) and displayed on the walls of our Parliament, State Assembly Halls, and at all our educational institutions. Most importantly, the material should be made a compulsory reading for all the school and college students- elaborating more on ' who is who' and the monumental contributions of these world renowned intellectual giants.” A great US based writer Prof Chitra Divakaruni has applauds Gewali’s work as: ‘Salil Gewali has lovingly compiled an excellent set of quotations that illustrate how highly great thinkers from all over the world valued Indian spiritual culture and how it transformed their lives. An inspirational read that reminds us of our amazing ancient heritage and why we need to incorporate it into our lives as modern Indians.’ Ms Divakaruni is world renowned for her famous novel ‘The Mistress of Spice’s that was released as a film directed by Paul Mayeda Berges starring Aishwarya Rai. (The preview of the book can be visited at: http://www.scribd.com/doc/36498555/What-is-India#fullscreen:on. The book is his tribute to the country.

Also a member of the International Organization of Journalists (IOJ), Salil Gewali has written 17 books including school textbooks. One of the prominent figures in the field of academy, he has written books for school students. His books are also recommended as textbooks by Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) beside by the front ranking private schools in the state.

Salil Gewali has written a large number of short articles for various newspapers. Among his numerous articles published in newspapers and magazines are ‘Explore the Majestic Indian philosophy, Modern Education: A Threat to Mankind, Romeo and Juliet: Near-Impossible, Desecration of Sex Appeal, Alas ! Love is Hurt, Vande Mahataram, Puja or a rise of Tamasik culture?, Womanhood under threat, Climatic concerns, Save the natives from sinister forces, First cleanse the textbooks, Why terror on the rise, It is public money, Murder of students, Why are we becoming so inhumane?, Rapes and Punishment, Teachers’ worries, Court’s decree, God’s decree?, Be kind-hearted etc. Salil Gewali says ‘Writing is my passion and I write on a broad spectrum of subjects that aim at bringing about awareness among the public for the upliftment of the society.’ His most outstanding contribution to the journalism is his unbiased, critical analysis and views about profession. In one of his articles ‘Modern education: A threat to mankind’ he dwells on the depravity of values in the present day Media. He asserts that journalists and the press could be the best educators and preachers too if they understand their accountability and righteous responsibility in moulding mindset of the believing masses into better human beings. He is a man of action and ardent follower of the freedom of the press provided the media does not trample the human values and social ethics. He is a great visionary and asserts that both journalism and education are supplementary to each other especially in this modern time of cutting edge of technology and communication. His power of persuasive and didactic styles in writing greatly inspires the youngsters. His book ‘What is India?’ speaks volume about his concerns for the society. He shows immense amount of nationalist approach, patriotism and a deep reverence for the intellectual prowess of the ancient literature and their authors. For his intellectual refinement, Gewali gives credit to the classical literature besides the works of western scholars like Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Emerson, Carl Sagan, Alan Watts and Aldous Huxley. He says great minds like Voltaire, T.S. Eliot, Friedrich Hegel, Julius Robert Oppenheimer (father of Atomic Bomb), Emerson, Thoreau, Erwin Schrodinger (father of Quantum mechanics), Mark Twain and so on had drawn sufficient intellectual nourishment from Indian classical literatures, the facts which are hardly know to the general masses in India. Commenting on the emerging trends of journalism Salil Gewali laments, ‘today the profession is bereft of ethics and the trend is fast rearing its ugly head. He says – ‘that steady degeneration of media is really a curse for the whole mankind. The greed of money is the root cause of this malaise.’ He opines that a journalist may be a faithful employee, but his responsibility is primarily towards the welfare of the masses. Public has the right to know the truth about the happening incidences, events etc. But however, they must be informed objectively, accurately, impartially and judiciously so that the news disseminated would not wreak havoc in the public domain. If the media losses trust of the readers, it loses all that is worth in journalism. Because, journalism is not a craftsmanship, it is creative ability with human sensitivity and compassion to seek to see the overall harmony, welfare and peace in the society. Gewali always looks forward to the empowerment and emancipation of Indian women but that liberation and freedom should not misused by undermining the social values in the name of profession which is quite evident in the current trend. He asserts women have near equal potentiality to excel in almost every field. He always emphasises the conditions necessary for the successful functioning of democracy and consistently stresses the great necessity for a strong opposition with an absolute sense responsibility and constructively unbiased criticisms for progress and development of the nation.
