Translator, We need you![edit]

Dear Takot,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

If you would be interested please take a look at this little sign-up survey and fill it out http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=13638&newtest=Y&lang=en. With that we can start building a list of people and filling any gaps in the languages we serve.

Many Thanks

Thank you for your translations[edit]

Dear Takot:

Thank you for helping to translate the WMF Grants program pages on Meta. Thanks to your efforts, these programs will be accessible to more people all over the world. We would like to send you something in appreciation of your work, so please contact us by Email at grants at wikimedia dot org with your name, shirt size (optional), address for delivery (not a PO Box), and telephone number (for delivery).

We would also like to let you know that our programs are growing and we will need to make some significant changes to these program pages in the next few weeks. When this happens, these pages may need to be retranslated, although much of the new text will be identical or similar to the text you've already translated: you've already translated this text, so you'd be able to copy and paste much from your existing translation. Please consider continuing to support the movement's work in this area, and please continue to let your multilingual friends and colleagues know that this support is still needed as our programs grow!

Please also let us know if you have any feedback for us: it's always welcome.

With appreciation,

Wolliff (talk) 18:50, 14 August 2012 (UTC) (on behalf of the Wikimedia Grants Team)[reply]

VisualEditor[edit]

Hello Takot,

User:Keegan (WMF) said that you might be able to help me with a big problem we have. I have just been assigned to help the Japanese, Polish, and Swedish Wikipedias with the new mw:VisualEditor software, which will probably be turned on for all their users in a few weeks.

The problem I have, is that I don't speak any of these languages! From what I can tell with Google Translate, the Japanese Wikipedia has no information about how to use this new software. Only 9 users tried to use it last month. I am worried that the editors will be confused and surprised when it is turned on. My two main tasks are to find people who can:

I have posted a note to ja:Wikipedia:Help for Non-Japanese Speakers#VisualEditor, and I would also appreciate any advice about people or pages in that project to contact, in addition to any help you can give me. Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:55, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Whatamidoing! I suppose people just don't know that VisualEditor is already available on ja.wp. In other words, it has not been announced well until now. Anyway, I can get started the translation this weekend. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask me. --Takot (talk) 17:53, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Whym and Miya have started the work. There is still a lot to be done.
Perhaps after some of the basic pages have been translated and copied to ja.wp, we could talk about how to let people know about VisualEditor's existence. I believe it would be better to wait until there are pages at ja.wp before trying to make many announcements there. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:18, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please consider not translating fundraising pages in protest[edit]

Hi Takot, I have just noticed that you've been working on the translation of a fundraising page today.

I wanted to ask you to consider refraining from translating such pages as a means of protest against the recent actions of the Wikimedia Foundation. On Sunday, they have implemented a change that gives them a unilateral and unlimited power to protect certain pages on Wikimedia wikis in a manner that makes it impossible for all volunteers — including locally elected administrators — from editing them.

The change was secretly forced through without any community consultation, and the Foundation have used this new feature to actively fight the volunteer community of the German Wikipedia.

Your volunteer translations directly help the work of the Foundation. Your work helps them save time and effort that they would otherwise have to invest in recruiting, training and managing new employees, and saves them money they would otherwise have to spend on professional translations.

The recent actions of the Wikimedia Foundation make it very clear that they no longer respect the wishes of the volunteer community, and that they no longer consider us an equal partner. The least we can do to voice our dismay at those actions, and to support our colleagues on the German Wikipedia, is to stop investing our precious time as volunteers on directly helping the Wikimedia Foundation.

Please take a minute to consider withdrawing your help for the Foundation in protest against their unbecoming treatment of the volunteer community of the German Wikipedia.

Thank you for your time and your consideration! odder (talk) 21:03, 11 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tomasz,
I read your opinion on wikimedia-l and other lists, and understood your concern. My view on this topic, however, is, at least, that should not be resolved by taking our translation workforce as a hostage. Thanks for your patience and support.

Ready for translation: VisualEditor News #9—2014[edit]

Hi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the November's issue of the VisualEditor monthly newsletter, which will be widely delivered later this week. The previous bulletin was published in 10 languages, but the translation was completed only for three of them. Will we do better this month? We'd like to reach many more communities in their own language this time, as we're announcing interesting developments like the new ability to add tables and their elements. Thanks a lot for your help! Elitre (WMF) 21:28, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've selected it, you'll see the document in English side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or modify existing ones. If you need further help or would like to receive a talk page message to be notified of future translations, please contact me directly.

Ready for translation: VisualEditor News #1—2015[edit]

Hi! Apologies if you're reading this message more than once. This is an invitation to join translators working on the February's issue of the VisualEditor multilingual newsletter. This time it features an important announcement about a series of meetings where VE tasks on Phabricator will be triaged live and publicly, starting next week. Since we want many people to be aware of this ASAP (especially volunteer developers!), we have a time constraint which means we'll deliver to the wikis on Thursday morning PST this week. Thanks a lot in advance, we know you'll do whatever it takes to keep your community up-to-date, and appreciate it a lot. m:User:Elitre (WMF), 22:08, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A gummi bear holding a sign that says "Thank you"
Thank you for using VisualEditor and sharing your ideas with the developers. My apologies if you're getting this message more than once, and/or not in your favorite language.

Hello, Takot,

I am contacting you because you have left feedback about VisualEditor at pages like mw:VisualEditor/Feedback in the past. The Editing team is now asking for your help with VisualEditor. Please tell them what they need to change to make VisualEditor work well for you. The team has a list of top-priority problems, but they also want to hear about small problems. These problems may make editing less fun, take too much of your time, or be as annoying as a paper cut. The Editing team wants to hear about and try to fix these small things, too.

You can share your thoughts by clicking this link. You may respond to this quick, simple, anonymous survey in your own language. If you take the survey, then you agree your responses may be used in accordance with these terms. This survey is powered by Qualtrics and their use of your information is governed by their privacy policy.

More information (including a translatable list of the questions) is posted on wiki at mw:VisualEditor/Survey 2015. If you have questions, or prefer to respond on-wiki, then please leave a message on the survey's talk page.

Ready for translation: VisualEditor News #2—2015[edit]

Hi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the April's issue of the VisualEditor monthly newsletter, which will be widely delivered towards the end of next week. The previous bulletin was published in 26 languages—the translation was completed only for ten of them. Will we do better this month? We'd like to reach many more communities in their own language this time, as VE recently became the main editor at other 50+ Wikipedias, and we're announcing interesting developments (auto-fill features for citations, improved special character inserter, drag and drop for categories, invisible templates now marked by a puzzle piece icon, and more). Early invitation: join VisualEditor's 2015 Translathon[edit]

Hello!

You are invited to join the 2nd edition of the VisualEditor Translathon! It is a translation rally, focused on interface messages and help pages related to VisualEditor.

In order to participate, you need to sign up on the Translathon page. The top 3 contributors will each win a Wikipedia t-shirt of their choice from the Wikipedia store.[1] Translations made between July 15th and July 19th (CDT time zone) qualify.[2]

If you are attending Wikimania Mexico this year, you are also welcome to join a related sprint during the Hackathon in Workplace 1 - Don Américo, Thursday 16 July at 4:00 p.m (CDT) at the conference venue, so you can meet other fellow translators and get support if you need some.

Interface messages have the priority. You will need to create an account at translatewiki.net in order to work on them, if you don't have one. It is recommended to create the account ASAP, so that it can be manually confirmed in time.

You can also help translate documentation pages about VisualEditor on mediawiki.org. You can use your Wikipedia account there. You will find instructions, links and other details on the Translathon page.

Thanks for your attention, and happy translating! Elitre (WMF) 02:59, 11 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  1. You can choose between any short-sleeve shirt, or other items for the same value.
  2. This means both new translations, and updates for messages in the "Outdated" tab of the translation interface.

A barnstar for you![edit]

Dear translator, with this barnstar the Community Liaisons would like to express their gratitude for your outstanding contributions to the recent 2nd VisualEditor Translathon. The initiative was really successful and we hope you enjoyed participating as much as we enjoyed organizing it! If you're looking for a new opportunity to translate VE-related content, please join translators working on the August's issue of the VisualEditor multilingual newsletter, which will be widely delivered at the end of this workweek. Among other things, this month it features the names of the top contributors for the Translathon ;) Again, thanks a lot for your help, and it was great meeting you in Mexico City! —Elitre (WMF) and Trizek (WMF), 15:31, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've selected it, you'll see the document in English side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or modify existing ones.
PPS: We are maintaining a list of editors who have worked on VE-related content (such as newsletters). We only use it to notify them of translation opportunities, to make sure they don't miss Translathons, etc. If you would like messages like this one to be delivered on your talk page at a different WMF project, need any help with translations related to VisualEditor or would like to remove your name from that list, please contact Elitre directly.

How can we improve Wikimedia grants to support you better?[edit]

Did you ever attend Wikimania with your money? Talk to us![edit]

TL;DR: Fill a short Wikimania survey, it takes 5 min.

Hi, I'm writing you because you are listed in Wikimania/Frequent attendees. As you probably know by now, Wikimania 2016 Esino Lario wants to achieve a Wikimania format which allows people to "get things done" and leave the conference fully satisfied with the result of their investment of time and other resources (see pillars 2 and 4: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Esino_Lario/Pillars ). For this purpose, we consider all audiences (see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Esino_Lario/Program#Target ).

Participants other than scholarship recipients and reimbursed representatives are one group we heard very little from, but we think they are important because: 1) they have financial resources and help make the Wikimania budget sustainable; 2) they have motivation to share and ideas on what makes Wikimania valuable.

We set up a form mainly to collect names of some such people and talk with them later: if you provide your contact, we may write you on this topic. We may release aggregate data from the resposes; data will be handled by us and the Wikimania 2016 fiscal sponsor "Ecomuseo delle Grigne" (under EU law). Please fill the whole form, it's short!

Feel free to forward this invite to anyone.

Thanks,

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review[edit]

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Asian Month Postcard[edit]

Hi Takot,

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Asian Month[edit]

Hi Takot and Katota1114, I'm one of the organisers of the Wikipedia Asian Month. I'm currently preparing the judging tool, and I need to know the minimum character limit for articles to be submitted by Japanese Wikipedia users. In a nutshell: the judging tool will only accept articles that are longer than the size requirements (3,000 bytes and 300 words for English), but it's impossible to automatically count words in Japanese, so I need to know the character limit. For example, this article has 315 characters, this one has 614 characters. Please decide on your Wikipedia's limit and tell me. Cheers, Le Loy 09:10, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Le Loy, in UTF8 encoding, Japanese characters are counted as one third of bytes. Last year we counted this way and I will use this way as well. In a nutshell, 1,000 characters. --Takot (talk) 10:43, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Postcard[edit]

Hi Takashi. Thanks for your postcard. I always sent you a postcard and hope it arrived by now. --Christian140 (talk) 12:16, 15 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Christian140, yes, I already received your postcard by December 28, 2016! Really appreciated (and the postmark seems special)! --Takot (talk) 12:43, 15 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Hello, I am Abhijit Das from Bangladesh. I got a very nice postcard from you today. I am really very happy and thank you very much. It is the most wonderful gift I ever got.- --অভিজিৎ দাস (talk) 18:40, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Abhijit! I sent a card to you at the most recent batch, if I remember correctly. I have a question: is the postmark on the card like this? --Takot (talk) 14:11, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks from Bangladesh[edit]

Hi Takot, I'd like to thank you very much for the beautiful post you sent me for WAM :) The Ritsurin Garden is so beautiful, I'll visit it someday. Tanweer (talk) 19:37, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help with translation?[edit]

Hi Takot! We need some help translating some text for the global survey into Japanese. Here is message 1 and message 2. I'd really appreciate your help. I completely understand if you don't have the time, but would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks! --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 18:42, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Edward! As you may have already noticed, I and User:Kzhr finished translating messages. Let me ask you a question -- the "message 1" contains "Sorry to write in English. Please help translate to your language." sentences but this is not designated as a translatable. As a result, https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Engagement_Insights/MassMessages/Village_pump_notice/ja includes this message untranslated. Is this part to be delivered? --Takot (talk) 06:41, 23 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your feedback matters: Final reminder to take the global Wikimedia survey[edit]

Ready for translation: Editing News #1—2017[edit]

Hi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the upcoming issue of the multilingual newsletter for the visual editor, which will be widely delivered when it's end of Friday in Central Europe, and that features, among other things, rumours about a much-desired syntax highlighting tool... Thanks for your help with this, it feels great to be back. --Elitre (WMF), 17:27, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've selected it, you'll see the document in English side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or modify existing ones. Please let us know about difficulties you experience with the translation memory system.

Wikipedia Asian Month 2017 officially starts![edit]

Dear WAM organizer,

I’m Erick Guan, the coordinator of WAM 2017. Welcome to Wikipedia Asian Month 2017. Here is some information about organizations of events at a national level.

Timeline[edit]

The event lasts a month for the participants. As of the beginning of the event, please:

  • Invite previous participants to join. We have a template you may want to use.
  • Setup your WAM page in your local wikiproject if you haven’t done that.
  • Link your WAM page at Wikipedia Asian Month 2017. It’s important for others to understand and connect to your community! Remove the X when you done that. WAM is organized at national level. So I have to ask you to put your country in front of your name if you haven’t done that.
  • Publish a notification about WAM in site notice as well as village pump. Go public!
  • Connect with us. Generally send me an email so that we can reach you for future information!
  • Become the jury member in a campaign on Fountain which is an amazing tool for you to supervise participants’ articles. If you don’t have the campaign set up, please contact us! And put a link to your community’s campaign page for participants’ navigation.
  • Organize a off-site editathon event. A coffee bar, internet and laptops. Though it’s optional. If you want to do that, please contact me.

In the following days, you should answer the questions from your community and supervise the submissions. Hope you have fun!

Interesting articles[edit]

Have some interesting articles in your mind or from community? Drop us a line so that we can exchange the information to other communities.

Request for help on Japanese Wikipedia - Templates[edit]

Hi Takot, I think we may have met at Wikimania in Esino Lario last year. My name is Ewan and I work at the University of Edinburgh as the Wikimedian in Residence there. Currently, we are running a Translation assignment with Translation Studies MSc students and we're looking to create some templates on Japanese Wikipedia so that any newly translated article can be identified as one created by (1) a new user and is (2) part of an education assignment at the University of Edinburgh. Do you think you could help with this? I am ok with templates... but my Japanese is not great. Best wishes, Stinglehammer (talk) 14:45, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Stinglehammer! Sorry I'm so late to be notified your message. How can I help you? Translating templates? --Takot (talk) 13:44, 11 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Takot:, yes do you think you could help with creating some templates on Japanese Wikipedia please? Or help me discover where there may be templates already? I am looking for templates that say the student's userpage states that (1) this is a new user', (2) their article is a new user article (3) the new article is part of an education assignment and (4) the new article is a translated page. Can you help? Stinglehammer (talk) 19:43, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WAM 2017 ambassador[edit]

Hi, this is Erick from WAM 2017 coordinator. We are processing postcard sending process. Now I'm wondering why 山田晴通 and Tze Chiang Hao have both enlisted as ambassadors and qualified with 25 articles on Wikipedia Asian Month/2017 Ambassadors while https://tools.wmflabs.org/fountain/editathons/asian-month-2017-ja shows the marks differently.--Fantasticfears (talk) 17:38, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

One of the articles Tze Chiang Hao contributed, more specifically, ja:w:奮起湖弁当, missed to be registered on the Fountain's tool within November. However, the first edit is November 19, 2017, and contributors were allowed to add edits to meet criteria until December 10 and actually improved by that date. So I decided to count it, thus one more points were added to them. This explanation has also been told here. --Takot (talk) 14:42, 19 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the upcoming issue of the multilingual newsletter for the visual editor, which will be widely delivered when it's end of Friday in Central Europe.

--Takot (talk) 15:29, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
返信が遅れてごめんなさい。去年、Takotさんがなさっていたのを真似ながら、以下のように2019年版のアーカイブと2020年版のセットアップを行ったのですが、これで大丈夫でしょうか?
また、オーガナイザーへの立候補は、単にTemplate:Wikipedia Asian Month 2020 Communities and Organizersに私の名前を書き込むだけで完了するのでしょうか? 片割れ靴下 (talk) 20:12, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Call for translators[edit]

Hello! You received this message because last year you were involved in translating the page of Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month in your language. The 2022 edition of the competition is going to start in one week, and I would like to ask whether you are interested in translating our landing page for this years' contest? We highly appreciate your volunteer work in this regard, and it would mean the world to us if you helped us with translation this year. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me. Sincerely,--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 11:58, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2022年7月以降の財団との橋渡し役について[edit]

@Takotさんは「私事の方が多忙を極めて」いらっしゃる中で不躾で失礼いたします。日本語コミュニティを越えた活動にもし、ご興味がありましたら近日中にお返事をいただければありがたいです。私は今月まで、リーガル部門の中の一つのチームにおります。スクロールダウンすると写真が載っています。 YShibata (WMF) (talk) 03:34, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
