Lists and Gmane [edit]

Hello, could you help me add all the links to Gmane from each row/item/list in Mailing lists/Overview? We're still missing so many, but I should have added all of them a while ago. Speaking of which, are new lists always being added to Gmane, including the newly-public lists which were previously private? Thanks, Nemo 20:21, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Nemo! Yes sure - I don't think all the lists have been added to Gmane, at least when I've created lists so far I haven't added them. I remember reading instructions somewhere on how to add a list to the archive but can't quite find them at present, do you happen to know where they are? Thehelpfulone 14:00, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
Too bad, it's a pity that you didn't. It's very easy, just fill this form. However, for lists which have not been added from the beginning it's also needed to provide mbox archives which can then be imported in Gmane, but only Lars can do it. You'll need to 1) fill the form for each list, 2) file a bug so that mutante can provide the archives in some wget'able web space, 3) send the links to Lars so that he can import them. There were 120 lists to add back then, now I hope you'll have much less work than that. :) Thanks, Nemo 00:00, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Wikivoyage launch -- CentralNotice [edit]

Hi TTO, I'm a Wikivoyager (former Wikitraveler) trying to understand what is needed to help make the Wikivoyage launch CentralNotice a winning success but I have no experience with CentralNotice. I noticed that you are a Meta Administrator and have entered the Wikivoyage launch CentralNotice on the CentralNotice admin tool. Thanks! Could you monitor our design of the Wikivoyage launch notice a little and let us know if we are missing anything or are heading in the wrong direction? I started making a banner for the notice at Talk:Wikivoyage_2013/CentralNotice#Banner. Is wiki markup prefered more than big banner image? Is 800x200 or 1000x200 right size? I'd like to show some Wikivoyage destination of the month travel photos in the banner for interest and could use this much space. Suggestions? Wikivoyage mobile [edit]

I was going to try to put mobile divs in Wikivoyage Main Page but I am not an administrator. So I can't. However, I noticed you had tinkered with that today. But it's still not working. Maybe you need to put a title="Some section name" attribute into the mobile div for it to work? I'm just guessing. See: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mobile_projects/Mobile_Gateway#Global_Prefix. Or maybe try the "<div mp-ABC...", which is working without a title attribute on Wikipedia Main Page, instead of "<div mf-ABC..."? --Rogerhc (talk) 01:42, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

I did some tests on test.wikipedia.org. Seems the title attribute is optional. I'm new to this mobile thing. Its documentation on Meta appears to be poor, alas. Would be helpful if someone in the know could update it. --Rogerhc (talk) 04:46, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Pine. I'm going to be quite busy over the next couple of weeks and so don't think I'd have the time to properly read through all of the comments. I can take a look at it in a couple of weeks if none of my fellow admins have closed it though? Thehelpfulone 14:52, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
OK thanks. At the current glacial pace of that RFC and its closure I would put the chances of the RFC still being open in two weeks at 50% or better. After taking a look at this and some other places on Meta, although I wouldn't plan to close an RFC in which I voted, I'm thinking about volunteering for Meta admin so I can help more with some of the processes on this project. --Pine✉ 18:17, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

There doesn't seem to be anyone around who has a satisfactory answer. Another user is reporting problems with the site being slow. I suggest that you subscribe to the labs email list at https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/labs-l and send an email to the list asking for assistance. Wikivoyage Main Page [edit]

Hi there!

I was just wondering if you could perhaps help us over at Wikivoyage with the creation of the new Main Page? We've got a rough design, (here: http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User:Nicholasjf21/MainPage) but we'd like to somehow make the images and text change size and/or position in order to fit each user's screen resolution (apparently this is called Responsive web design?). It's been suggested that we could achieve this with either JavaScript or CSS, but unfortunately I'm not particularly familiar with either. ... Can I report to you (since you're an admin etc.)?

Where do I get this oh-so-helpful message (in a pop-out, no less!)? I'm trying to translate Wikimania pages into Polish, and when I click save in the last text-piece on the IRC page, it says: "Error saving this page. Please report this error." Any ideas why that may be?

Board elections template [edit]

Hi THO - thanks for your work on all of these documents, and for activating the adminships here on Meta. I have just looked at the template on the page, and it says that voting will begin February 8, 2013, which is definitely not the case. I'd fix it myself on the template, but I don't know where it is to fix it. The election date should be blank at this point. I hope you'll be able to make this change? Thanks. Hi Risker. You're welcome, and the status page is located at Board elections/2013/Status, you'll see from the history there that I just copied it from the one we use for the Steward elections and was thinking through how the translations would work in conjunction with the translate extension so I didn't change the dates yet. I'm currently looking through the previous 5 warnings and copying them over to that status page, but in the interim I've commented out the status to avoid any confusion - thanks for the catch. Thanks for signing up to join the Individual Engagement Grants Committee! It is my pleasure to confirm your membership. We’ve got a lot to accomplish together, particularly during the next 6 weeks, and it will be awesome to have your help. Here is how to get started:

To make your membership official, please do 2 things by February 11th:

  1. Introduce yourself in the IdeaLab.
  2. Send your email address to IEGrants at wikimedia.org, so that we can subscribe you to the committee mailing list.

Then there are 2 first tasks' for active committee members to start on right away:

  1. Review information in the Committee Workroom (your new organizing hub on meta), including responsibilities and the review process. Feedback and questions are very welcome at this stage.
  2. Start giving feedback on open ideas, drafts and proposals. Asking questions to gather information you’ll need to make a recommendation helps prospective grantees think their projects all the way through, and will give us more great proposals to choose from.

Our formal review of proposals starts February 22nd. I’ll be posting information about scoring and selection of proposals on the committee mailing list and in the Workroom soon, so please keep an eye there!

Translation question [edit]

Would it be correct to migrate all the pages on {{Template:Other languages/Meta:About}} to Special:Translate, like Meta:About/xyz? I was about to do it, but I noticed they all had different page names. RecentChanges glitch? [edit]

Move vs. cut & paste archiving [edit]

Hmmm. I suppose I'm still living in 2007 when we generally believed that archival by moving breaks fewer connections (by preserving the edit history with the page which has the content) than copy and pasting. Perceptions change quickly! Deryck C. 18:49, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Global Economic Map [edit]

The Global Economic Map is incompatible with the English Wikipedia 'Economy of ____' articles because there is already a deep amount of unorganized information on these pages that would ruin my project. The contents of every 'Economy of ______' are all very different. There is excess information on these pages that I would not want to include in the Global Economic Map. The entire value in my project is the simple standardized model. My standardized model allows for cross country (or cross locality) comparisons.

There is not a lack of data and information for this project. This model can be applied to every single locality, city and company. That's a lot of economic data if you know where to find it. My project, asks for volunteers to help locate that data and centralize it in a single place.

I looked on that link for outlines and there is not a standardized model for regional economics pages.

Hi Thehelpfulone, there are some new developments in my project and right now I am seeking outside opinion about where this project should be located within Wikimedia. Recently, I tried submitting a Wikipedia article named 'Economic summary of the United States' and was rejected. Deletion spree of Category:Looks useless? [edit]

CentralNotice for Wiki Loves Public Art [edit]

Hi Thehelpfulone!

User:PiRSquared17 was planning to help us activating a CentralNotice on the first of May about the photo contest Wiki Loves Public Art, but he just told me that he was busy IRL. He suggested asking you and I was hoping that you could help us.

The CentralNotice is already in the calendar. It should be activated based on the country, with the main language of the country as the standard (i.e. German for anyone accessing with an IP from Austria). In the case of Spain: if the users in Spain have Spanish as their setting that translation should be shown, if they have Catalan that version should be shown. So only for Spain the language should change depending on the settings (if this can be done). It should be worldwide on Commons.

All translations for the CentralNotice can now be found here. Could you please help activate it on the first of May?

Translation on Foundation wiki [edit]

I just happened to see your post on wikimedia-l about translation. Do you think it is OK to move ready translations there, or do the staff want to handle this in the future? PiRSquared17 (talk) 03:09, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

I don't think that staff will be able to dedicate the resources necessary to do the translation organising and transferring themselves, but I did loop them in to the email that I sent so I'd like to wait for their response first so see how they want to move forward.
