WikiTimeline[edit]

Is this project proposal still active? If not İ would lıke to reactivate ıt, since I was about to create a similar one. --Loannes (talk) 10:34, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Note : most of the examples offered below have a canonical wikipedia article; the timelines could be constructed as EasyTimelines and inserted into those articles, without a need for a separate project / domain. A "Timelines Wikiproject could help this get off the ground, however. Sj 01:12, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Note : I agree, thanks for pointing that out SJ. It does seem to be more of a merging project with Wikipedia. I also came across List of timelines which shows how shabby the current collection of timelines is, especially since each one needs to be manually added to the list. If there could be some sort of software addition that provides an optional "add-on" timeline template for each Wikipedia article that is recognized automatically by Wikipedia as a timeline, this "List of timelines" directory could be amazing. Otherwise there will continue to be 50 different types of mish-mash timelines from html, tables, etc. Then with such a directory perhaps users can not only find a timeline of African wars, for example, but can cross-reference the war history of individual African nations and thus by going to the bottom can discover the current, unresolved wars of each nation or of Africa as a whole, instead of visiting the Wikipedia article for each nation seperately. I don't know the full capabilities of EasyTimeline. Jejani 22 March 2006

Note : Furthermore, after reviewing most of the timelines that are listed either on List of timelines or at Timelines Index, the majority are either not truly timelines but rather a list of simple dates and facts that could become excellent timelines, or they are actual EasyTimelines but are so complicated and hard to follow that they are worthless. Examples:

What we must remember, I think, is that the key ingredients of good timelines are simplicity and concise information. Also, a main idea I had in mind was that instead of linking, for example, the name "Victoria" to a Wiki article about her like at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Timeline_House_of_Hanover, we could instead link "Victoria" to another timeline about her life. Thus, users don't need to keep searching around for timelines because they are all linked to each other as part of a sub-Wikipedia software or something. Jejani 22 March 2006

WikiTimeline[edit]

  • Domain name: WikiTimeline.org (unregistered) Note : possible merge with Wikipedia
  • Scope: Many Wikis across the internet hold a lot of fantastic information, the advantage being that they are updated so often. However this advantage is worthless at times when the reader must spend a long time figuring out the order of the described events, often being unable to do so. This is because many wiki pages only have a limited number of dates and years listed in which said events took place. Only a few media outlets like CNN.com have seen the value of simple timelines for reference, and it is time to make timelines a bigger part of organizing all the information on the web. The timelines would not entail long descriptions, but rather short identifiers of key events, as determined by editors. Possible examples:
  • lives of famous people
  • histories of countries
  • regional wars and conflicts
  • developement of organizations
