Wiki Loves Africa/Ghana

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) is an annual contest where people across Africa can contribute media about their environment on Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation. Wiki Loves Africa particularly encourages participants to contribute media (photographs, video and audio) that illustrate a specific theme for that year. Each year the theme changes and could include any such universal, visually rich and culturally specific topics (for example, markets, rites of passage, festivals, public art, cuisine, natural history, urbanity, daily life, notable persons, etc).

The theme for the 2014 photo contest will be Wiki Loves Africa Cuisine. This year's contest will seek to document in the form of various media, the diverse types of cuisines across the continent of Africa. The theme will encompass the "foods", "dishes", "crops", "husbandry", "culinary art", "cooking methods", "utensils", "food markets",traditional symbols and arts "festivals", "culinary events", "famine food" and any other issues related to cuisine on the African continent.

Wiki Loves Africa activity in Ghana[edit]

In response to the above quest the Ghana team have taken it upon themselves to ensure that they capture as many Ghanaian cuisines as possible to complement the purpose of this campaign. We have a list of planned activities that will ensure our interest. We intend to contribute to this campaign via picture and video formats that will serve as rich contents for this cause. Cooking Competition (15th November)[edit]

This event did not hold because the hosting school were not willing to host the event and failed to communicate it in due time. It was a great disappointment for us, but allowed us to plan for the pending cooking competition by putting alternatives in place should similar circumstances crop up.

Photowalk (22nd November)[edit]

This activity was suspended so we could adequately plan for the next cooking competition in order to avoid disappointments just as we previously experienced. It was rescheduled for the 30th November, 2014.

Cooking Competition (29th November)[edit]

The cooking scheduled for the 29th November, 2014, was held in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Tema and the Interact Club of the Deks Educational Institute. The event saw 9 Rotracters and about 15 Interacters in attendance resulting in a total 24 participants. 5 different dishes were prepared at the event, they include Rice Balls (Omo Tuo) and Groundnut Soup (Peanut Butter soup), Boiled Yam and Garden Egg Stew, Mashed Plantain (3tor Korkorr), Banku and Okro Stew, Gari Soakings and Banku and Abobi Tadi.

About a 150 Pictures and 3 videos were obtained from this cause, participants were introduced to the Wikimedia Foundation and and other sister projects. It was generally successful even though our target institution failed to host the event, we made use of our alternative which came up splendid.

At the end of the Photowalk we visited the Busy Internet Cafe to ensure uploads, we encountered several difficulties as the internet was slow and unstable.
