Mission[edit]

This mediawiki project called Wikimechanist should come up with useful information about repairing, rebuilding, home electronic-mechanic tools used in our daily life or work. For instance "Building USB sharing device yourself" would be a topic in the project.

Further examples: Mountain Bike repair: (Brakes, Tyres, Winter Tyre for mountain bikes, etc.)

Subaru Forester Timer Belt Replacement[edit]

This is an upcoming project that will include most probably my own forester. But as a "recover-plan", this part will be filled up by the existing literature. -- pictures, instructions etc.--

Mounting Auxiliary Fog Lights[edit]

  • Tools needed:
  1. 17 mm socket and short extension
  2. 10 mm drill bit
  3. 60 mm long 10 mm wide two screws (60 mm long screw fits to the height of bumber plus fog light stand, be careful, not more-not less)

Subaru Forester Air Filter Change[edit]

  • Tools needed:
  1. Screw driver or 10 mm socket

Subaru Forester Spark Plug Replacement[edit]

  • Tools needed:
  1. 10mm socket or ratchet - to remove motor cover, front part of intake and wire stay rail on drivers side of motor (LHD)
  2. 12mm socket and long extension - to remove airbox bolts, socket removes coil pack bolts too.
  3. 12mm open end - sometimes getting at the coil pack requires an open end due to tight quarters.
  4. Flat blade screwdriver - to remove hose clamps that fasten on intake hose to air box. It's also used to separate the extension from the socket.
  5. Flex head ratchet - This helps a lot getting a better swing instead of a lot of little clicks removing the spark plugs.
  6. 12mm socket and ratchet 1/4" drive - The back plugs by the fire wall have very little room to remove the coil pack. I needed a small or rather thin headed ratchet to fit in there. I had to use a 1/4" drive. Try with your 3/8" drive it may be narrow enough mine wasn't
  7. 5/8" spark plug socket - to remove spark plugs, note remove the rubber cushion insert inside the socket. If you don't you will have a heck of a time getting the socket off the spark plug after you install it. It's in there deep an it's tough to grab.
  8. 3" extension for socket - For removing the spark plugs this is a must any bigger or smaller will not work
  9. Retrieval Magnet - I have one on the end of a telescopic want and used it many times during this procedure. From getting tools I dropped under the car to getting the spark plug out of the hole.
  10. Spark plug gap measuring tool - a flat blade is best for new plugs not the round type - To verify spark plug gap of 1.0 - 1.1mm or 0.039 - 0.043 inch. The plugs come pre-gapped but it does not hurt to double check them.
  11. Drop light - to see better of course

Optional:

  1. Anti seize - I use this on the spark plug threads
  2. Dilectric grease - I put a dab on the top of the spark plug where the coil packs wire touches the plug

Studded winter tyres for bikes[edit]

Do it yourself[edit]

This is the algorithm to build your own studded winter tyre for bikes.

  • Tools needed:
  1. 16mm(length), 3.5mm(width) screws.
  2. 3mm drill bit.
  3. Screw driver.
  4. Isolation tape.
  • Place the screws inside the tyre.
    • Use drill bit and the screw shown in the Figure 1.
    • Set the screws into tyre as shown in the Figure 2.
    • Inorder to set the screws exactly at the center of the teeth. You should drill the tyre firstly from the outer side.
  • Use isolation tape to protect your inner tube from screw's head.
    • See Figure 3 and Figure 4.
  • Screw outside the tyre should be seen as in the Figure 5.
    • Inorder to set the screws exactly at the center of the teeth. You should drill the tyre firstly from the outer side.
  • Ready to drive.
    • Overall view of the studded tyre is in the Figure 6.
  • Notes:
    • We may have to shorten the length of the screws outside the tyre. Or use 12mm screws instead.
