Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons (pagina principală română) arhivă centralizată pentru imagini, muzică, clipuri muzicale şi, posibil, texte şi texte audio gratuite folosite în paginile oricărui Proiect Wikimedia. A fost lansat la 7 septembrie 2004.
Motive
The aim of Wikimedia Commons is to provide a media file repository "that makes available public domain and freely-licensed educational media content to all, and that acts as a common repository for the various projects of the Wikimedia Foundation."
Wikimedia Commons is a multilingual project. The default language is English, but registered users can customize their interface to any other available user interface translations. Many pages have also been translated into various languages. Users are encouraged to help with translations.

Central media repository
Înainte, fiecare dintre multele proiecte Wikimedia -- fiecare Wikipedia şi Wikționar, fiecare Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wikiversity şi Wikiquote -- foloseau propria lor bază de imagini. Nu exista o modalitate performantă de a trimite către imagini din alte proiecte. Multe fişiere folositoare trimise pe o wiki puteau să treacă neobservate pe alta. În plus, modalitatea de a introduce fişierele pe fiecare wiki era greoaie şi necesita un surplus de întreţinere.
