Wikimedia chapters/WMF grants

Please provide Feedback on the 1st Grant Cycle; see the Reporting Guidance for the 21 approved projects
If a chapter has work it wants to get done in the furtherance of our overall mission and goals during the fiscal year 2009-2010 (July 1, 2009 -June 30, 2010), but it cannot do it without financial support, the Wikimedia Foundation is inviting that chapter to ask the Wikimedia Foundation for funding. All funding requests must be made public on this page, following the template described below. This public process is to ensure that requests can be reviewed and commented upon by the general public. The tentative deadline for requests is April 21, 2009.
[edit] Key guidelines and criteria
- All requests must line up with our shared mission. We will favor high impact requests over low impact ones. Example requests could include: funding for a Wikipedia-related conference or workshop, for a meeting with other chapters, for a legal opinion related to free culture, for relevant open source software development, etc.
- This process is open to all chapters officially recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation. If your chapter is still in development, you can still apply for funds (especially when they are relevant to getting your chapter off the ground), and we will request input from the chapters committee to help us assess whether your chapter is ready to absorb them.
- The minimum amount a chapter can ask for is USD 500. There is no set maximum, but we expect most requests will not exceed USD 15,000.
- Any chapter that is awarded a grant must submit a report about its activities, and its success or failure, no later than three months after the end of the project.
- All applications must be submitted in English.
[edit] Evaluation and approval
Any request submitted before the April 21, 2009 deadline will be evaluated as part of the budget development process for the fiscal year 2009-10. We will notify submitters, as per the contact information provided, whether their requests have been approved by June 30, 2009.
[edit] Submission template
Please create a chapter funding request by adding the text "WM XX/YY" below, where XX is the country code of your chapter, and YY is the title of your request. So, the full page name would be, for example, "Wikimedia chapters/WMF grants/WM DE/Semantic search tool". Then click the "create" button, and you should see a self-explanatory page.
All completed applications submitted before the deadline will be considered.
