Wikipoetry is stuff that doesn't make any sense, but is fun to read. Like META-PHILSOPHY (Saprtacus) for instance. Or w:ontology (Larry Sanger).

Example[edit]

Wiki Poetry Translation of John Donne's No Man Is An Island

The Challenge

I am asking bilingual or multilingual people to translate the following poem into another language. Please feel free to start from a “word by word” translation. Please do not use “translating software” or previously published translations of this poem.

When editing the poem try to make changes which either, better represent the contextual meaning of the words, or better represent the original structure of the poem (rhyme, meter, etc). Ideally, people will find ways to do both.

John Donne's No Man Is An Island

No man is an island, entire of itself;
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less,
as well as if a promontory were,
as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were.
Any man's death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind;
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
—from "Meditation XVII"

French: N'y a pas un homme qui soit une île

N'y a pas un homme qui soit une île, complète à soi-même;
chaque homme est une part du continent, une part du noyau.
Si une motte soit lavé par le mer, l´Europe soit du moins,
aussi si elle soit un promontoire,
aussi si elle soit le manoir de ton ami ou de toi-même.
Le mort d´un tel me diminue parce que je suis une part d´humanité;
et donc n'envois jaimais savoir pour qui sonne la cloche; elle sonne pour toi.

German: Kein Mensch ist ein Insel

Kein Mensch ist eine Insel, vollständig in sich selbst;
jeder Mench ist ein Teil des Kontinents, ein Teil des Festlands.
Wenn die See ein Klumpen Erde wegspült, ist Europa weniger,
genau so, als wenn es ein Vorgebirge wäre ,
genau so, als wenn es das Anwesen deines Freundes wäre, oder dein eigenes.
Der Tod jedes Menschen verringert mich, weil ich in die Menschheit eingebunden bin;
So schicke nie einen Diener zu fragen, für wen die Glocke läutet; sie läutet für dich.

second suggestion:

Niemand ist eine Insel, alleine ganz;
jeder ist ein Teil des Kontinents, ein Teil des Ganzen.
Wird ein Teil vom Meer abgetragen, so ist Europa weniger,
so wie es ein Vorgebirge wäre,
so wie es die Villa deines Freundes wäre, oder deine.
Der Tod jedes Menschen nimmt ein Teil von mir, da ich Teil der Menschheit bin;
so frage nie, für wen die Glocke läutet, denn sie läutet für dich.

Dutch: Geen mens is een eiland

Geen mens is een eiland, in zichzelf besloten;
elk mens is een stukje continent, deel van het vasteland.
Als een kluit aarde wegspoelt in zee, krimpt Europa,
of als een klip wegspoelt,
of het huis van je naaste of dat van jou.
Elk sterfgeval neemt iets van mij weg, omdat ik deel uitmaak van de mensheid;
vraag daarom nooit voor wie de doodsklok luidt; zij luidt voor jou.

Swedish: Ingen människa är en ö

Ingen människa är en ö, hel i sig själv
Varje människa är en bit av kontinenten, en del av det hela.
Om en sten sköljs ut i havet går lite av Europa förlorat,
som vore det en klippa,
som vore det en gård som togs från din vän eller dig själv.
När en människa dör krymper jag, ty jag är en del av mänskligheten;

Czech: Zadny clovek neni ostrov

Zadny clovek neni ostrov, nikdo neni jen pro sebe;
kazdy je kouskem svetadilu, vsichni patrime k pevnine.
Kdyz more odplavi hroudu zeme, je o to mensi Evropa,
jako by zmizel cely lan,
jako by zmizel domov tvuj ci pritele.
Kdyz nekdo zemre, je mne o nej mene, nebot se k lidstvu pocitam;
proto uz neptej se, komu zvoni hrana - to zvoni pro Tebe!

Portugueses: Nenhum homem é uma ilha

Nenhum homem é uma ilha, todo seu;
todo homem pertence a um continente, é parte de um todo.
Se um torrão é lavado pelo mar, a Europa é o menor,
como se fosse um promontório,
como se fosse a propriedade de um amigo teu, ou tua própria.
A morte de qualquer homem me empobrece porque estou envolto em humanidade;
e então nunca busque saber por quem dobram os sinos; eles dobram por ti.

Wiki Poetry Translation[edit]

This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it.

In Practice[edit]

I am suggesting bilingual or multilingual people translate a poem into another language. Any poem used would need to be public domain content. Please feel free to start from a “word by word” translation. Please do not use “translating software” or previously published translations a poem.

When editing the poem try to make changes which either

  • better represent the contextual meaning of the words, or
  • better represent the original structure of the poem (rhyme, meter, etc.)

Ideally, people will find ways to do both.

Discussion Can it work? Should it be done? What poems would be chosen?

For those who would like to try the idea or see how it would work, I have set up a potential example using John Donne's "No Man Is An Island."

What kind of poetry would be translated? If we use famous pieces of poetry, then there already are existing translations, but if there are no translations, erm, maybe there is a reason for that? Should people propose poetry and let others translate it?
