Non-official and non-country domains should not point to Wikipedia[edit]

Some people think Wikipedia is a .com. This because when the enter "Wikipedia.com" to end up whit wikipedia. I find that those .com and others non-org should point to page that says that this is not the correct domain of Wikipedia and that the correct one is wikipedia.org

Wikipedia is a .org and should be proud of it.

The country domains should point to local portal pages. And there should be finaly a solution for the url www.wikipedia.org that still points to EN. Walter 13:35, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia should not have a high Google rank[edit]

Some people think Wikipedia is an encylopedia copycat site. This because when they search for encyclopedic definitions they see Wikipedia listed right at the top, along with all the other copycat sites. I find that no one should be allowed to link to Wikipedia, because only the Wikipedia is correct and others are not correct.

Ich bin stolz eine Wikipädia zu sein.

No user will ever notice that all the redirects point to wikipedia.org. Trust me. People are stupid, so screw them. And as regards www.wikipedia.org, there should be a final solu–

"Listen, don't mention the war. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it. So it's all forgotten now and let's hear no more about it. So that's two egg mayonnaise, a prawn Goebbels, a Herman Goering and four Colditz salads....no, wait a minute...I got confused because everyone keeps mentioning the war."

"Will you stop mentioning the war?"

"You started it."

"We did not start it."

"Yes you did, you invaded Poland." Ropers 03:07, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Wiki*.edu[edit]

Is there some plan for registering domains in .edu tld, like wikipedia.edu ? Greudin 11:31, 11 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Domains that aren't WP owned[edit]

I was wondering if the people could have any law power with the copies of wikipedia they have made for example at wikipedia.ws. If they could bring us in court over false accusations on earlier pages or diffamation or something else. Or, in the other case they could get sued for publishing copyrighted pictures that weren't filtered out by WP. 24.201.116.26 15:56, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • en.wikipedia.org = wikipedia.org
  • fr.wikipedia.org = wikipedia.fr
  • de.wikipedia.org = wikipedia.de

etc....

Many (in fact most) languages do not have an obvious one-to-one mapping with a country. What do you propose to do with the isiXhosa, seSotho, isiZulu and Afrikaans wikipedias. You can't put them all at wikipedia.za. There is not Esperantio domain (Esperantio/Esperantujo is the fictional country where the real-life language Esperanto is spoken) Furthermore, with the current system Wikimedia only has to pay for one domain (wikipedia.org) whereas with your system they would have to buy domains in every country - and I'm not sure if domains are even available in some countries. I'm sure domain registration isn't the Sierra Leonese government's (what government?) top priority? --w:Taejo13:02, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
What do you think of buying those most wanted domains and putting a redirection ? Fore example, the french domain wikipedia.fr links to the standard one with a "location" header. I think they could improve it so that http://wikipedia.fr/wiki/Molière or even http://wikipedia.fr/Molière automatically redirect to http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molière
--Caerbannog (see profile on french wikipedia), 8 january 2006
Agreed - TLDs have no correlation to language, and the whole thing would just create confusion, bureaucracy, and possibly infighting by people from different countries who are unhappy with the choice of any given country to represent a language. The existing system is simple, clean, and effective - no need to change it. -- Brian, 18 January 2006
For some national TLDs like .ir (for Iran), there's no relation between the concept of wiki and the country TLD. For example Persian Wikipedia is also used by Persian speakers from Afghanistan and Tajikestan (though rarely by now). And I guess current domain name structure is based on language and not nationlity. --Shervin Afshar 07:18, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In reply to Caerbannog, French is not the only language spoken in France. The best idea would be for http://www.wikipedia.fr/ to be like http://www.wikipedia.org/ in that it would provide a portal to different languages. The difference is that .fr would be a portal to those languages most spoken in France: French, German, Arabic, the languages Oc, Portuguese, the languages Oïl, Italian and Spanish (to name the top eight). --Oldak Quill 16:16, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have to agree with Oldak. wikipedia._?_ could simply be a portal like [1]. In fact, you could probably just copy the page directly from there and copy it to every TLD. My reasoning: everyone in the US uses .com, and wikipedia.com links to a portal. For example, .es is essentially the .com of Spain, .de the .com of Germany, etc. When you have to type in .co.uk to go to a site, it feels weird to you (assuming you live in the US). It would just make things so much easier for people in other countries if they could just type in something that's familiar to them. -- Kmp589 03:22, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wikipedia.org.au[edit]

I noticed a couple of days ago that http://www.wikipedia.org.au was a clone site running the MediaWiki engine, but with no content, claiming to be the "Open encyclopedia for Australians". There was no content apart from a few anonymous users on Talk:Main page page abusing him.

Now I see it redirects to http://en.wikipedia.org. Great job, whoever was responsible for sorting that out! -- Chuq 12:47, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wikipedia.eu[edit]

moved from main page Shimgray 22:22, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

.eu-Domains will be available somewhere in the future. It would be nice to have a portal for all european Wikipedias at www.wikipedia.eu.

I'd like to have a real portal where you can access all the news of each Wikipedia -- Nichtich 13:39, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

  • How's each Wikipedia growing?
  • New articles, recent changes...
  • Parts of each wikipedias Main page can be exported as short messages
  • What's going on at the mailing lists?
  • Are there special projects?
  • Wikimedia project of the week
  • ...

And links to translation services, too.

Call for differentiation[edit]

We should note that we can use both wikipedia.eu and wikimedia.eu. Most of the ideas above seem to cover wikimedia in total.

I would prefer to restrict wikipedia.eu to a mere portal containing links to all language editions which are spoken in EU-countries (officially or as a matter of fact.)

If an edition of wikipedia has an Portal about Europe, we can import them automatically. I would put everything else to wikimedia.eu, maintained by a network of local wikimedia entities in Europe and everybody who is able to find that edit button... -- Mathias Schindler 13:52, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

It would be nice if also the languages spoken in the four EFTA countries (Norwegian and Icelandic (the languages of Liechtenstein and Switzerland are also spoken in EU countries)) could be included (they are part of the European Economic Area). Wolfram 05:58, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Please leave Norway out of anything on the .eu domain. There have been two elections in Norway saying "no" to join the European Union. Europe is not the same as the European Union.

.eu soon[edit]

1.sunrise phase will start "soon" (4th Quarter 2005). IMO Wikimedia should apply at least for wikipedia.eu and wikimedia.eu during sunrise, as a registered trademark owner. Why I'm bothering in advance: "applicants must comply with the geographical requirements applicable to all .eu domain name holders", i.e. have their registered office or fullfill some other clause. Then, who should apply? Wikimedia Found., or one of Eauropean chapters, or...? --Wikimol 14:06, 3 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Grabbed[edit]

The domains wikipedia.eu, wikimania.eu, wikinews were grabbed by Infochannel Group Ltd. & Co. KG/Firestorm Forces Ltd. (I think everybody knows them: wikinews.cc, wikimania.co.uk, ...). --de:Benutzer:Soultcer 11:11, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Why the move?[edit]

@Korg: I know it's been 13 years, but do you (or anyone else) happen to remember why this page was moved to the WMF internal wiki? --Yair rand (talk) 23:04, 13 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Yair rand: Hi! Please see User talk:Danny~metawiki#Domain names. Regards, Korg (talk) 15:00, 14 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Since the issue seems to have been about domains that are not currently held by Wikimedia organizations, would there be an issue with recreating it to be just about domains we already hold? It could include a link to wikitech:Domains, perhaps. --Yair rand (talk) 03:59, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Yair rand: I don't think there would be an issue with recreating it. Feel free to update the page. Korg (talk) 20:16, 23 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

wikipedia.org.au (2021)[edit]

This domain name, which has for years redirected to en.wikipedia.org (but which recently stopped doing that), is now under the control of Wikimedia Australia (and is again redirecting, via WMAU's web server). The AuDA recently changed the rules about who's allowed to own .org.au domain names, so the individual who used to have the domain could no longer do so, but WMAU is eligible. —Sam Wilson 23:19, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
