L'Africa Environment Day o Wangari Maathai Day si svolge il 3 marzo di ogni anno. È stato introdotto dall'Organizzazione dell'unità africana nel 2002 per sensibilizzare le persone sulle impellenti sfide climatiche del continente. Dal 2012, l'Africa Environment Day è stato coordinato dall'Unione Africana assieme al Wangari Maathai Day, in modo da rendere omaggio allo scomparso Premio Nobel e al suo pensiero in campo ambientale.
Contesto
L'African Knowledge Initiative (AKI) ha incaricato Wiki In Africa (WIA) e il Wikimedia Community User Group Côte d’Ivoire (WMUG IC) di incoraggiare la creazione di contenuti e di contributi sfruttando la visibilità offerta dal Wangari Maathai Day (3 di marzo) dell'Unione Africana.
L'obiettivo principale dell'iniziativa è di incoraggiare Wikimedia e altre realtà a contribuire ai progetti Wikimedia con contenuti inerenti il clima dell'africa nel Marzo 2023 e oltre. Individui, gruppi e organizzazioni sono liberi di contribuire in vari modi. Le comunità di Wikimedia che desiderano ospitare eventi di contribuzione o formazione possono fare domanda per un microfinanziamento di un ammontare tra i 100 USD e i 1500 USD. La scadenza per l'applicazione per il microcredito è il 28 Febbraio.
Le attività chiave del progetto includeranno la facilitazione e il supporto di almeno 11 gruppi di utenti e gruppi volontari locali Wikimedia per ospitare eventi di formazione e contributo con le loro comunità sui temi chiave specializzati di seguito. Ci saranno orari di lavoro, sessioni di formazione e celebrazioni online. Inoltre, il team si avvicinerà a organizzazioni, ricercatori, attivisti e accademici incentrati sul clima e sull'ambiente per collaborare con noi su questo progetto. Queste partnership e alleanze garantiranno che gli editori di Wikimedia abbiano accesso a dati, materiali sorgenti e prove visive di qualità, validati e aggiornati. Ciò contribuirà a garantire che i contributi di qualità siano effettuati nell'ambito del progetto.
Gli argomenti trattati in questo approfondimento sono collegati ai climi africani, e l'impatto di climate change e problemi o rischi ambientali affrontati da paesi e gruppi nel continente africano. A causa del panorama linguistico africano, per un massimo impatto il progetto sarà bilingue: Francese e Inglese.

| Improve description of Women in Climate pictures | Wiki Loves Women focuses on bridging two significant gaps on Wikimedia projects – women and Africa – both in terms of content about these subjects and in terms of participation by people from these groups. The AKI initiative
A partnership between the Wikimedia Foundation and the African Union, the African Knowledge Initiative celebrates three critical subjects in its inaugural year: youth, environment, and the African continent. Each focus subject has been entrusted to two implementing Wikimedia-focused partners.
Content sources
A portion of the source material and intelligence will be provided by the Africa Union. Climate and Environmental Organizations and NGOs, and academic and research institutions will also be approached as content and participation partners. Content partners are welcome!
