Africa is the second largest continent on earth, with a diverse range of plant and animal species across different vegetation types. However, there is little information detailing the biodiversity of Africa.

The Africa Open Biodiversity Campaign is designed to document and preserve African biodiversity on Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. We invite you to join us in this mission to protect Africa's unique and valuable biodiversity. One way to get involved is through our photography contest. Whether you are an amateur or a professional photographer, you can contribute to documenting African biodiversity by capturing stunning photographs and videos of the unique flora and fauna found on the African continent.

  • Biodiversity professionals who can bring their high level of knowledge, interest, and experience to enhance Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia content, respectively.
  • Biologists (marine, zoology, botany)
  • Agriculture scientists
  • Wildlife photographers
  • Nature photographers
  • Open science enthusiasts
  • Wikipedia and Wikivoyage contributors

Why Participate?[edit]

  1. Your contributions will increase African-generated content about the continent’s biodiversity online.
  2. You will help create awareness and interest among the general public about the project and create visibility of the African biodiversity on Wikipedia and its sister projects.
  3. Help propagate the need to create more content about African biodiversity that promotes the uniqueness of Africa.

How to participate[edit]

1 Sign in or Create a new account on Wikipedia.

2 Enroll on the Africa Open Biodiversity Campaign Outreach Dashboard to track your contributions. (Register on the dashboard)

3 Register for the onboarding and training sessions. (Registration link)

4 Sign up in the participants section on this page.

5 Upload your images/photographs on Wikimedia Commons.

Campaign rules[edit]

Please read the rules carefully before the contest commences.

  1. All participants must create a Wikipedia account and be signed in before making any uploads/edits.
  2. Ensure you are enrolled on the dashboard, so your edits can be tracked as part of the campaign.
  3. All contributions to the campaign must follow or be related to the campaign's theme.

Campaign timeline[edit]

  • Start Date: April 15th, 2023
  • End Date: May 15th, 2023
  • Results Announcement: June 1st, 2023

  • 1st prize - $120
