Overview & Guideline
[edit]The Africa Wiki Women Newbie Community is a structured onboarding and mentorship space designed to support new and early-career contributors to Wikimedia projects.
The community provides guidance, learning resources, and peer support to help participants build confidence, develop editing skills, and grow into active and sustainable contributors within the Wikimedia movement.
Objectives
[edit]The Newbie Community aims to:
- Support new contributors through structured onboarding
- Build foundational skills in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects
- Increase retention and active participation of women and allies
- Provide mentorship and peer learning opportunities
- Track growth and impact for learning and reporting purposes
How to Join & Get Started
[edit]To join the Africa Wiki Women Newbie Community:
- Follow and subscribe to the Africa Wiki Women community channels and social media platforms. (Find Links at the bottom of this page)
- Join our WhatsApp Community for personalized guidance.
- Complete the mandatory Newbie Baseline Survey
- Create a Wikimedia account (if you don’t already have one).
- Add your username to the Newbies program Dashboard
- Take this self-paced course on WikiLearn Platform.

Learning & Mentorship Pathway
[edit]Newbies follow a structured learning and mentorship pathway that includes:
- Introduction to Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects
- Basic editing and article improvement
- Referencing and sourcing
- Understanding notability and policies
- Introduction to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata
- Participation in campaigns and edit-a-thons
All participants are expected to:
- Follow the Wikimedia Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC)
- Africa Wiki Women community values (Harassment, discrimination, or disruptive behavior is not tolerated.)
Violations may lead to removal from the Newbie Community.
