Amar Ekushey Article Contest (AEAC) is an annual online writing contest on Bangla Wikipedia (bn.wikipedia.org), organized by Wikimedia Bangladesh and held every February in observance of International Mother Language Day. The name "Amar Ekushey" refers to "Ekushey February" (21 February), a day of profound historical and cultural significance in Bangladesh associated with the Language Movement and the global recognition of mother languages. First launched in 2017 under the name "Article Contest" and officially renamed as the "Amar Ekushey Article Contest" in 2021, the initiative aims to improve the quality of existing articles on Bangla Wikipedia through collaborative community participation. As of 2025, the contest has contributed to the creation of 2,916 articles on Bangla Wikipedia, with a total of 6,678 participants taking part across all editions.
International Mother Language Day highlights the importance of linguistic diversity, multilingualism, and the preservation of native languages. Bangla is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, ranked as the 7th largest language globally, with over 242 million native speakers and an additional 43 million second-language speakers as of 2025. In Bangladesh, the day holds profound cultural and historical significance, symbolizing the nation’s deep love and commitment to the Bangla language. In this spirit, Wikimedia Bangladesh has been organizing the contest almost every year to enrich high-quality content in Bangla and to encourage contributors to develop knowledge resources in their mother tongue. During the contest period in February, contributors to Bengali Wikipedia focus on improving, expanding, and refining existing articles, with particular emphasis on reliable sourcing, encyclopedic standards, and overall content quality. Participants are recognized based on the quality and impact of their contributions, and local judging, certificates, or community recognition may be arranged at the discretion of Wikimedia Bangladesh.
The core motto of the contest is: "Let’s put the things we love, in our own language."
