Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)
After 150 years of Sámi language suppression, South Sámi and other Sámi languages now enjoy protection and promotion from school authorities and other government authorities in both Norway and Sweden. There are growing use of the language both formal, private and unformal. However, there are some problems yet to be solved with lack of teachers, translators and other language workers. Translation of little used official documents tend to use a large part of translator capacity, resources that could better used promoting every day use of South Sámi. I will present the children's books translation work that I'm involved in, and discuss whether the Atlantbib net publishing project or a South Sámi Wikipedia edition are the best opportunity for online language promotion. I will end my presentation with an fictional anecdote of Jütta Düffelbürger (98), the last person fluent in the lost hellebardic language.
What will attendees take away from this session?
A wider knowledge of the distribution of South Sámi, and the efforts made to strenghten the language. And a better understanding of why it's probably not a good idea to start a South Sámi Wikipedia edition.
