Knowledge Gaps Don't End at Wikipedia

Art+Feminism has spent over a decade closing knowledge gaps on Wikipedia. But Wikipedia was always the starting point.

As the internet changes, so must our work. That is why we are expanding into Wikidata.

Why Wikidata?

Wikidata is Wikimedia's free, collaborative database of structured information. It connects knowledge across Wikipedia, supports hundreds of language communities, and powers the search engines, research tools, and AI systems shaping how knowledge is discovered.

Knowledge gaps do not exist only in articles. They also live in the underlying data that decides what gets found, linked, and surfaced online. Absences in that data can spread across platforms and grow over time.

The Stakes

AI systems, search tools, and recommendation engines are only as good as the information they are built on. When women, LGBTQ+ people, Indigenous communities, and people with disabilities are missing from structured data, they risk becoming even less visible across the digital world.

Sometimes that absence is not an oversight. During their session at the ESEAP Conference 2026, Art+Feminism Network Organizers Anthony Diaz and Jessie Mi encountered a question that cuts to the heart of this work: how do we document LGBTQ+ lives on Wikipedia when the published record has intentionally erased them? When verifiability depends entirely on mainstream sources, following standard rules can mean becoming part of that erasure. They explained that working with community-led archives and oral histories opens space to document lives that were deliberately written out of the mainstream record in ethical and careful ways. Wikidata offers a way to capture that knowledge responsibly.

The questions that inspired Art+Feminism in 2014 remain urgent: Who is represented? Whose knowledge is considered valuable? Who has the power to shape the record?

Those questions now extend into data.

Building on Our Work, Not Moving Away From It

Our growing focus on Wikidata is not a move away from Wikipedia, which remains central to our work. What is changing is our recognition that closing knowledge gaps requires work at multiple levels.

Articles matter. Images matter. Data matters.

Get Involved

There are many ways to participate, whatever your experience level:

  • Explore our Wikidata Learning Modules to understand how structured data works and why it matters
  • Browse our Wikidata Resource Deck for editing resources, event ideas, and community tools
  • Contribute to Wikidata, keep editing Wikipedia, or work across multiple Wikimedia projects

The goal is the same as it has always been: an internet that reflects the richness and diversity of our shared histories.

Knowledge gaps don't end at Wikipedia. And neither does the work of closing them.

2025-2026 Art+Feminism Conversation Series

Art+Feminism partners with community members, visual artists, and educational and collecting institutions to host public conversations among like-minded feminists from around the world who are experts in their fields. See the Art+Feminism 2025-2026 Programming page for more details. Some of the conversations hosted includes:

AI + Artists + Data Conversation

Art+Feminism hosted a conversation in collaboration with WMDE featuring artists Nora Al-Badri and Michael Mandiberg (co-founder of Art+Feminism) about what it means to make art in the age of AI.

Drawing on their work with structured data and digital systems, they shared how artists use data as material, how visibility is shaped by code, and what AI reveals about culture, memory, and power.

Feminist Structured Data: A Conversation with Art+Feminism and Whose Knowledge?

In collaboration with Whose Knowledge?, Art+Feminism hosted a conversation about feminist structured data. In this session we explored how feminist values can shape not just what data we collect, but how we structure, interpret, and share it.

We also discussed: why feminist approaches to structured data matter. How Wikidata’s current gaps reflect broader inequities in knowledge production The challenges of representation and capacity on Wikidata Opportunities for collaboration between local and global communities.

Archives, Memory and the Power of Data: A Conversation with Savannah Wood and Teri Henderson

Art+Feminism partnered with Johns Hopkins Sheridan Libraries to host Archives, Memory, and the Power of Data at the George Peabody Library in Baltimore, Maryland. This hybrid public conversation explored how archives shape the internet and how feminist approaches to data can reshape collective memory.

The evening featured a thoughtful conversation between Savannah Wood, Executive Director of Afro Charities, and Teri Henderson, curator, writer, and founder of Black Collages. Together, they explored where stories live, who stewards them, and what it means to care for memory in an era defined by digitization, AI, and misinformation.

Queer Women in the Arts: A Conversation with Ad Minoliti, Ana Raylander Martis dos Anjos and María Belén from the Archivo de la Memoria Trans Argentina

This Women’s History Month we organized a very special panel followed by a workshop in partnership with Wikimedia LGBT+ titled Queer Women in the Arts. With the presence of the visual artists Ad Minoliti, Ana Raylander Martis dos Anjos and María Belén from the Archivo de la Memoria Trans Argentina, we were able to spark a rich discussion on visibility, memory, and representation of queer women in arts and technology.

This event was part of the Wikimedia Celebrate Women calendar and our campaign “What Would a Truly Feminist Internet Look Like?” (2025–2026). In addition, through a workshop facilitated by Vic Sfriso (Wikimedia LGBT+ and WMAR) and Freddy Veloz (Wikimedia LGBT+), we learned together how to address these issues on Wikidata, a project on which we have been focusing during the second year of this campaign to explore data structure, governance, and models.

2025 Virtual Editing Tables (VETs) Roundup

We heard from so many of you after each session that you wanted to dive deeper, and we’re making it happen!

Our 2025 VETs brought feminist editors, artists, and activists together to explore key issues at the intersection of gender, digital knowledge, and information activism. Each session is led by an Art+Feminism advisor and an inspiring guest facilitator, built community and deepened understanding on crucial topics.

How Images Can Change the Internet

Led by Art+Feminism Leadership Advisor Flavia Doria and featuring illustrator and designer Bárbara Fonseca, this VET unpacked how gender biases shape the diversity and quality of images online. Participants learned how to upload images to WikiCommons and explored strategies to mobilize artists in building feminist counter-narratives within Wikipedia.

  1. Illustratona WELX, a WikiEditoras Lx initiative
A collaborative effort by Wiki Editoras Lx, Ilustratona WELX brings together artists and editors to create images that expand Wikipedia’s visual diversity.
  2. Visible Wiki Women
A Whose Knowledge campaign that tackles the gender gap in online visuals by adding thousands of images of women to Wikimedia Commons.
  3. Herchive
Co-Founded by Bárbara Fonseca. Herchive uses Instagram as a platform to preserve and share images of women’s everyday lives, celebrating diverse stories that often go overlooked.
  4. Lorraine O’Grady, Art is…
In this powerful performance, Lorraine O’Grady reframes Black presence in the art world through an unforgettable Harlem parade.
  5. The History of Art Without Men, by Katy Hessel
This groundbreaking book reveals the often-overlooked contributions of women artists, rewriting the narrative of art history. Available from Penguin Random House UK (2022).

Editing WikiQuote with WikiLoves Women Team

Art+Feminism Leadership Advisor Zita Ursula Zage and guest facilitator Florence Devouard led this dynamic session dedicated to the She Said Campaign. Together, participants improved gender representation on Wikiquote by documenting quotes from Black women, non-binary, and LGBTQI+ individuals who have shaped history and challenged oppression.

  1. Notes and Articles Improved or Created
Explore the collaborative progress from our Virtual Editing Table, where participants enhanced and expanded quotes from Black women, non-binary, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
  2. Red Lists to Create or Improve
Use this dynamic list as a starting point to create or improve entries on Wikiquote. Featuring quotes that uplift feminist voices and challenge digital knowledge gaps.
  3. Former Entries Created, To Improve
Continue the work by refining existing entries and ensuring the contributions of underrepresented voices are documented with accuracy and care.

Transnational Data Activism and Feminist Movements in Latin America

Art+Feminism Leadership Advisor Michaela Blanc and guest facilitator Dr. Alessandra Jungs de Almeida guided us through how feminist movements in Latin America use, refuse, and demand data to fight feminicide and advocate for reproductive justice. Participants explored data as a tool for feminist resistance, while learning Wikipedia editing skills to amplify marginalized voices.

  1. Feminist Security Studies from Latin America and the Caribbean
Edited by Dr. Alessandra Jungs de Almeida, this Spanish-language book examines feminist security perspectives from Latin America and the Caribbean. Published by the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2025).

Updated July 2026

Our event guidance used to focus narrowly on COVID-19. But public health systems worldwide have been underfunded or eroded, and the burden of staying safe has shifted onto communities themselves. That calls for more care, not less. COVID, flu, RSV, and other illnesses remain real concerns, especially for immunocompromised people and those who can't afford to lose income or access. Safety isn't a checklist, it's an orientation.

Public Health at Your Event

Ask what's safest for the most vulnerable people who want to attend, including venue staff. Decide your precautions, how you'll communicate them, and who enforces them, adapted to your context and resources. We encourage a virtual or hybrid option for every event, both as a health precaution and a basic condition for participation.

Microfunding covers masks, PPE, tests, HEPA purifiers, and hybrid tech/connectivity. See our Health Precautions for In-Person Events guide for details on ventilation, masking, testing, and communication.

Accessibility

Plan for accessibility from the start: language justice (multilingual materials and interpretation), childcare (stipends, on-site support, family-friendly scheduling), and culturally appropriate food. Microfunding can help cover these costs.

Digital Safety

Virtual/hybrid events extend safety online, especially where digital surveillance is a concern. See our Virtual Meeting Guide (preventing Zoom bombing, safer online spaces) and Digital Security Toolkit (protecting data and communications).

Sustainability

Bring sustainable practices to fit your local context: digital sign-ins, shared materials, reusable bottles/mugs, local refreshments, recycling/composting where available. Practices will vary; find what works locally.

Other Ways to Be Involved

Capacity isn't always what it once was. We see you; we are you. If organizing isn't possible right now:

  • Руководство по виртуальной встрече Искусство+Феминизм
  • Снимки экрана, демонстрирующие, как организатор Art+Feminism мог бы использовать Zoom, Google Meet и StreamYard
  • Breathwork recordings with Tazeen Ayub (Session 1, 2, 3, 4)

Our mission is a marathon, not a sprint. Rest is part of the training.

«Искусство+Феминизм 2022»

As we enter our ninth campaign year, we remain dedicated to building a community of activists who are committed to closing information gaps related to gender, feminism, and the arts, on Wikipedia (and beyond).

Yet we know, that in this third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, that our community of organizers has changed as many of you have had to reprioritize your lives around new familial responsibilities, job loss, the loss of loved ones, or other significant changes and have not been able to organize Art+Feminism activities. We do appreciate that you all have stayed connected as readers of our newsletters, donors to our fundraising efforts, and attendees of Art+Feminism events around the globe.

We are grateful that you have remained committed to this essential work. If you will be joining us this year, we want to reiterate our commitment to community care and ask that you do the same. If you’d like to join the campaign and organize an edit-a-thon, panel, or meetup, please contact us. We’ll connect you with a regional ambassador who can help you with your event planning.

If you’re curious but unsure about joining the campaign this year, we invite you to take a look at some highlighted events from last year’s campaign, Our suggested Timeline for Event Organizers, and our Virtual Event Resources.

No matter what your level of participation, we value you as a member of this community and look forward to engaging you in the years to come.

In Solidarity, Art+Feminism

PS You may have noticed we’re starting our annual campaign later than usual. If you’ve reached out to us recently, then you know we’ve spent several months working to develop equity and anti-racism policies and practices to ensure our operations align with our mission. We look forward to sharing these developments soon!

As you may know, WMF has completely redone their grants program. We are applying for two-year funding for a Wikimedia Community Grant, covering January 1, 2022 - December 31, 2023. We invite you, as an important stakeholder of the organization, to review and give feedback by October 28, 2021. Please use whichever version you’re most comfortable with (please note, WMF has moved to Fluxx for grants and no longer will be using Wiki-Meta for grant applications; this version on Wiki-Meta is for the purpose of community review).

It is linked in both versions, but here is a direct link to the proposed budget.

Please note, in the next board meeting, it will be an action item to approve this budget. We encourage the community to use the talk page or on the Google Doc using the comments function to highlight questions, concerns, and also share affirmations. You can also email kira(_AT_)artandfeminism(_DOT_)org.

"Internalized Misogyny" by Gucora Andu, an Art+Feminism Call to Action Art Commission

Open call for artists to create an original, open-license work which helps to visualize Art+Feminism. The work will be used by the global Art+Feminism community in future Art+Feminism campaigns. The Call to Action Art Commission was established by Art+Feminism in 2017. Under this program, artists create a Special:MyLanguage/Creative Commons licensed work that is hosted on Wikimedia Commons. In 2021, we are celebrating the Global South, limiting applicants to artists located in regions where the curators of the call reside: African countries, Brazil, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

We’re interested in working with artists that align with our values (which centers all our work), sees their own art as a form of activism, and can help visualize what Art+Feminism looks like. Interested artists should fill out this brief form for consideration. Up to two selected applicants will receive a 2000$ (USD) artist fee for their work each. All applicants will be eligible to attend a workshop about WikiCommons on August 18.

Deadline to apply is August 16, 2021

Timeline, FAQ and application form (available in English, French, and Portuguese) are available on our website.

Call to Action Art Commission New Works

"Ladies Dabba" by Aditi Kulkarni, an Art+Feminism Call to Action Art Commission

Art+Feminism is pleased to announce three new pieces hosted on Wikimedia Commons as part of the Call to Action Art Commission program by artists Gucora Andu (Kenya), Aditi Abhijit Kulkarni (India), and Thamires Fortunato Martins (Brazil). The new pieces by Gucora Andu and Aditi Kulkarni are available now on Wikimedia Commons. The work of Thamires Fortunato Martins will be available in mid-March 2022.

Art+Feminism team members and Co-curators Zita Ursula Zage, Medhavi Ghandi, and Juliana Montiero selected these three artists out of 85 applications to create original pieces of work that visualize Art+Feminism. The work will be used by the global Art+Feminism community in future Art+Feminism campaigns.

In our most recent open call, we celebrated the Global South, exclusively inviting applications from artists located in regions where the curators of the call reside: African countries, Brazil, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Each commission came with a 2000$ (USD) artist fee.

Call to Action art commissioning program was established by Art+Feminism in 2017 with the goal is to both highlight the work of contemporary artists and to expand the body of images available that represent the project.

Unreliable Guidelines: Reliable Sources and Marginalized Communities in French, English and Spanish Wikipedias

Report of the research project Reading Together: Reliability and Multilingual Global Communities

Released June 2021

This research was led by Amber Berson, Monika Sengul-Jones and Melissa Tamani and was partially funded by Wikicred. The report is initially available in English.

Executive summary

In a historical moment typified by concerns about the proliferation of propaganda and misinformation online, we ask to what extent are contributions from and content about marginalized communities affected by guidelines about reliability in three language versions of the world’s largest crowdsourced online encyclopedia? This report takes on this question and addresses how Wikipedia trainers involved in the Art+Feminism movement approach the reliable source guidelines in French, English and Spanish Wikipedias. Based on community conversations and interpretative analysis of the guidelines, the report shows that on Wikipedia source authority is facilitated by social and technical processes which elevate the decisions of a small number of self-selected editors. Trainers play an essential role in translating guidelines and processes, and take on additional labor in managing editorial friction. We also highlight that translations of texts about reliability between different language versions of different language versions of Wikipedia tend to center Western knowledge formations. This report describes our methodology; our findings; and the effects for marginalized communities and readers writ large. Reliability should not mean exclusion: we end with recommendations for enacting more inclusive and diverse Wikipedias.

Art+Feminism 2020-2021 Campaign

We write with enthusiasm inviting you to join this work in 2021 as we continue to address the gender gap and center the work of the work of women, feminist, BIPOC, queer, non-binary, and immigrant art and artists.

In the past few years, we’ve typically announced a theme we’ve set for the campaign, but this year we’re intentionally welcoming you to organize on a theme or topic that is the most relevant to you and your community.

To assist in this effort, as we celebrate Wikipedia's 20th birthday, we’re hosting a series of workshops for the community to connect and learn about what is happening in our various global communities and discuss and brainstorm different topics and themes together. (More details and sign up form.)

Onward,
