Scope

  • Encourage students to take part in various Wiki projects.
  • Empowering students to gain new skills and build confidence to work in regional language Wiki projects.

Goals

  1. At least 30 students will create accounts on Assamese Wikipedia.
  2. At least 10 active editors will join various Assamese Wikimedia projects following creation of their first Wikipedia articles on the day of the workshop.

Pre-workshop demonstration

A Pre-workshop lecture and demonstration was organized at the lecture hall, Department of Assamese, Bodoland University on 3rd March, 2025 from 12 noon to 1 PM, in presence of the students and the Head of the department to give them an idea about various Assamese wikimedia projects. The following activities were undertaken:

  • Introduction to Assamese wikimedia projects/What is Wikipedia
  • Why we need wikipedia
  • The Five Pillars
  • FAQ
  • Account creation

29 accounts were created by the participants during the pre-workshop event.

Interested participants have been asked to finalize one encyclopedic topic of their choice with a few references for the day of the workshop.

Agenda

This will be a one-day workshop on Basics of Assamese wikipedia organised by the Assamese Wikimedia Coommunity in collaboration with the Department of Assamese, Bodoland University.

  • 10:00 am to 10:15 am - Introduction and Ice-breaking
  • 10:15 am to 11:00 am - Hands-on training on Basics of editing a page
  • 11:00 am to 12:00 noon - Creating your first article
  • 12:00 noon to 12:15 pm - Tea break
  • 12:15 pm to 12:45 pm - Basics of adding references
  • 12:45 pm to 1:15 pm - The style and formatting
  • 1:15 to 1:30 pm: QA session and conclusion

Brief Report

  • he workshop commenced at 10:00 AM with Prof. Sumi Kalita, HOD of the Assamese department at Bodoland University, welcoming everyone and introducing the three trainers. Prof. Jati Sarmah, Rector of Bodoland University, spoke about the value of free knowledge and these kinds of student workshops. The trainers then explained what the participants could expect and set out the workshop's code of conduct. Next, the participants introduced themselves. 32 of the 34 attendees used mobile phones, and 2 used laptops.
  • At 10:15 AM, Gitartha Bordoloi led a hands-on session on basic page editing. Pranjyoti Nath and Joysagar Murmu provided assistance. Participants explored Assamese Wikipedia, examined sources, created sandbox pages, and practiced modifying infoboxes. Both source and visual editing methods were demonstrated.
  • Pranjyoti Nath then took over for a session on creating new articles at 11 AM. Participants, who had prepared content the day before, learned how to create page sources and add information. Seven new pages were created during this session.
  • A 15-minute break was observed at noon, followed by a group photograph.
  • At 12:15 PM, Gitartha Bordoloi taught the participants about adding references, explaining why they're important in Wikipedia. He showed them different ways to add references, including the 'Prove it' tool, which they then used in some articles.
  • Pranjyoti Nath led the final session at 12:50 PM, focusing on Wikipedia's style and formatting, including sections, infoboxes, and images.
  • The workshop concluded at 1:30 PM after a question-and-answer session.
