Basque Wikimedians User Group/Annual plan/2026

The annual plan for 2026 by the Basque Wikimedians User Group is baed on the 2024-2028 strategy. Our main goals are to increase resiliency, opening new paths for the future. The Annual plan is divided according to the main guidelines stablished in the strategy.

Section 1: Increase the resilience of the BWUG

As part of our commitment to increasing the resilience of the Basque Wikimedians User Group, we are focusing on strengthening communications, building new institutional partnerships, and expanding our capacity to deliver impactful projects via external grants. For year 2026, we are pleased to welcome a new Communications Officer whose activities will be incorporated into our strategic direction, ensuring consistent outreach, while exploring new ways of communicating. We will also pursue collaborations with public institutions by presenting the benefits of hosting a Wikimedian in Residence, pitching the idea of long-term partnerships that amplify our mission. Furthermore, if awarded a CERV project grant and/or an Erasmus+ project we plan to hire dedicated staff to implement it effectively, ensuring that new initiatives are delivered with sustainability and impact in mind.

Objective 1.1: Strengthen communications capacity

Key Result 1.1.1: Fully integrate the Communications Officer’s plan into the organizational strategy by the end of Q1.
Key Result 1.1.2: Implement at least three high-impact communication initiatives during the year.
Key Result 1.1.3: Explain our projects to at least 20 schools.

Objective 1.2: Build new institutional partnerships

Key Result 1.2.1: Learn about and translate the experiences of Wikimedians in Residence in other European countries.
Key Result 1.2.2: Deliver at least two pitches to public institutions about hosting a Wikimedian in Residence.
Key Result 1.2.3: Conduct at least two follow-up meetings with institutions after initial pitches.
Key Result 1.2.4: Document and evaluate feedback from all institutions approached. Creating a lessons-learned report by year-end if the pitching results are negative.

Objective 1.3: Expand organizational capacity through funded projects

If CERV project wasn't possible in October 2025:

Key Result 1.3.1: Submit the CERV project in the next avaiable 2026 slot.
Key Result 1.3.2: Analyze with WMEU the possibility of a new Erasmus+ project.

If CERV project was submitted in October 2025:

Key Result 1.3.1: If successful, hire a qualified staff member within two months of grant approval.
Key Result 1.3.2: Launch the funded project by Q3.
Key Result 1.3.3: Analyze with WMEU the possibility of a new Erasmus+ project.

Section 2: Invest in community's capacity development

To further strengthen community engagement, we will focus on creating spaces for learning, collaboration, and boost international participation. In January, we will host the second meeting of Basque Wikimedians, offering workshops and training opportunities that help build skills and foster stronger connections among members. Throughout the year, we will organize at least two open activities in partnership with museums, expanding our reach and encouraging cultural collaboration. We also aim to increase the participation of our members in international meetings—particularly Wikimania in Q3—so that our community can both contribute to and learn from the global Wikimedia movement. Finally, with the support of our new Communications Officer, we will systematize the documentation of our activities, ensuring that knowledge and experiences are captured and shared more effectively.

Objective 2.1: Strengthen local community engagement

Key Result 2.1.1: Organize the second meeting of Basque Wikimedians in January.
Key Result 2.1.2: Host at least two open activities with museums that involve members and external audiences.

Objective 2.2: Improve gender balance in participation

Key Result 2.2.1: Help the local WikiEmakumeok (WikiWomen) groups with capacity building.
Key Result 2.2.2: Make efforts to boost a new local WikiEmakumeok group by year-end.

Objective 2.3: Increase member participation in international forums

Key Result 2.3.1: Support participation of at least five different members in international Wikimedia events.
Key Result 2.3.2: Ensure representation at Wikimania in Q3 with at least three members attending and reporting back.
Key Result 2.3.3: Participate in WMEU's GA in Prague.
Key Result 2.3.4: Propose the hosting of the ED meeting in the Basque Country.

Objective 2.4: Improve documentation and knowledge sharing

Key Result 2.4.1: Develop and implement a standardized documentation workflow with the Communications Officer by mid-year.
Key Result 2.4.2: Publish at least four comprehensive reports or stories highlighting activities and outcomes by year-end.

Section 3: Innovate in Free Knowledge

Innovation is at the heart of our mission to expand free knowledge in Basque. In 2025, we will continue pioneering multimedia and educational projects that make knowledge accessible, engaging, and relevant to diverse audiences. By combining videos, podcasts, comics, and school-based initiatives, we will reach learners of all ages and backgrounds, ensuring that the Basque language is active, vibrant and thriving in the digital sphere. These projects also contribute to global priorities such as education, cultural heritage preservation, and equity in knowledge access. With the support of our new Communications Officer, we will strengthen outreach and visibility, ensuring our impact resonates across communities and new audiences.

Objective 3.1: Expand the Ikusgela multimedia project

Key Result 3.1.1: Apply for at least three external grants to secure funding for new video production.
Key Result 3.1.2: Publish an average of two videos per week during the school year, supporting teachers and students with free, high-quality content.
Key Result 3.1.3: Launch at least one new video project within the framework of a CERV proposal on ethics (if awarded), fostering critical reflection on contemporary issues.
Key Result 3.1.4: Produce a sociolinguistics video series in collaboration with an external partner, promoting awareness of linguistic diversity.
Key Result 3.1.5: Publish one new video series on migrations, amplifying underrepresented perspectives.
Key Result 3.1.6: Sustain the existing sections (philosophy, literature, history, evolution...) into 2026 and 2027, ensuring continuity for learners.

Objective 3.2: Advance cultural heritage with the “History of the Basque Country in 100 objects” project

Key Result 3.2.1: Obtain free photographs of all missing objects, making them accessible to the public.
Key Result 3.2.2: Publish the first half of the podcast series (50 episodes) by year-end, co-created with Berria and written by 10 leading Basque writers.
Key Result 3.2.3: Design a visual system for showing podcasts at Basque Wikipedia.
Key Result 3.2.4: Decide on where and how to show the scripts made by writers in the Wikimedia ecosystem, and start talks about a future book with help from an external partner.
Key Result 3.2.5: Publish the first 50 comic pages for children in the Ikasi Otsorekin subproject, integrated into Txikipedia, supporting early education.
Key Result 3.2.6: Engage Ikastola students to contribute to at least 25 history-related Wikipedia articles, embedding free knowledge creation into classrooms.
Key Result 3.2.7: Collaborate with the Basque Government on innovative methods of presenting the objects, reinforcing institutional partnerships.

Objective 3.3: Innovate in educational projects with partners

Key Result 3.3.1: Partner with the University of the Basque Country in the Diximed project, recording at least 200 student voices for medical topic definitions to enhance Txikipedia, combining learning with contribution.
Key Result 3.3.2: Publish three new Ikas-egoerak (educative situations) in partnership with Talaios coop., linking Wikimedia resources with school curricula.
Key Result 3.3.3: Ensure at least 20 schools are aware of and engaged with the new Ikas-egoerak by year-end, promoting uptake in formal education.
Key Result 3.3.4: Test if the brand we use (Wikikasi) is the best option for this project.

Objective 3.4: Enhance outreach and visibility to maximize impact

Key Result 3.4.1: Develop at least three new communication strategies or tools proposed by the Communications Officer to broaden the reach of all projects.
Key Result 3.4.2: Achieve a measurable increase in reach (views, listens, downloads, or school participation) of at least 10% compared to 2025, ensuring that free knowledge projects benefit more people.

Section 4: Identify new topics for impact

To ensure that our work remains relevant and impactful, we will dedicate efforts this year to identifying new content areas where the Basque Wikimedia community can make a difference. By collaborating with the University of the Basque Country, museums and other GLAM institutions, we will identify important gaps and misconceptions in existing Wikipedia articles, especially about Basque history and culture. We will also strengthen our global engagement by participating in Wikimedia Asia Month in November, selecting a country in Asia and working alongside local Wikimedians to enrich coverage. Finally, we will conduct a mapping exercise to analyze how our ongoing projects relate to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), enabling us to identify impactful subjects that we have not yet addressed.

Objective 4.1: Identify and address local knowledge gaps

Key Result 4.1.1: Meet university professors and GLAM experts who can help us identifying missing topics and misconceptions, centered on the project "History of the Basque Country in 100 objects".
Key Result 4.1.2: Generate a priority list of at least 30 topics for future editing initiatives by Q2.
Key Result 4.1.3: Organize an edit-a-thon with at least a museum and a professor in order to edit those topics.
Key Result 4.1.4: Track the improvement of those articles by year-end.

Objective 4.2: Strengthen global collaboration and participation

Key Result 4.2.1: Actively participate in Wikimedia Asia Month in November by collaborating with Wikimecna dians from one selected Asian country.
Key Result 4.2.2: Contribute at least 50 improved or newly created articles related to the chosen country.
Key Result 4.2.3: Test the possibility ot organize a local WLM volunteer team by Q2.

Objective 4.3: Align projects with global impact frameworks.

Key Result 4.3.1: Map all ongoing projects against the SDGs by mid-year.
Key Result 4.3.2: Identify at least three SDG-related subject areas currently underrepresented in our activities.
Key Result 4.3.3: Propose one pilot activity that addresses one of the newly identified SDG-linked subjects.

Section 5: Improve Basque reader's experience

To improve the experience of Basque readers, we will focus on strengthening both the quality and accessibility of content. Having completed the project of improving the most important articles every Wikipedia should have and positioning Basque among the top-performing languages, we now turn our attention to the global list of 10,000 essential articles. By working collectively to improve these entries, we aim to raise Basque at least two positions in the overal languages ranking. In parallel, we will explore new ways of making content more accessible by collaborating with Wikimedia Sweden to assess the feasibility of implementing Wikispeech in Basque. These initiatives will enhance both the depth and inclusivity of the Basque Wikipedia for readers.

Objective 5.1: Improve the quality and coverage of relevant articles at Basque Wikipedia

Key Result 5.1.1: Hold two edition contests to improve at least 200 articles from the global list of 10,000 essential articles.
Key Result 5.1.2: Advance the Basque Wikipedia by at least two positions in the global ranking of essential articles (from 17th to 15th).

Objective 5.2: Continue our education work with students

Key Result 5.2.1: By the end of the year, at least 300 students have participated in our university program.
Key Result 5.2.2: At least 20 secondary schools will participate in our project with Ikastolen Elkartea to improve Txikipedia.

Objective 5.3: Explore accessibility innovations for Basque readers

Key Result 5.3.1: Establish contact with Wikimedia Sweden and Elhuyar Foundation and hold at least two meetings on Wikispeech.
Key Result 5.3.2: Produce a feasibility report outlining the steps needed to implement Wikispeech in Basque by Q2.
Key Result 5.3.3: Iterate on the results from 5.2.2 if possible.
