In 2025, the Basque Wikimedians User Group (EWKE/BWUG) has continued to carry out initiatives along the same lines as previous years. It has continued to expand the Educational Program and has given a major boost to the video creation project, the generation of further articles related to female biographies, and the 1,000 articles that all Wikipedias must have. It has also promoted a number of other projects outside the educational program. This report summarizes the activities developed during the year, as listed below. You can also check the version in Basque of this report.
On January 25th, we held the 2025 General Assembly of the Association. It was held in Eibar, at the Markeskua Palace, venue of the Basque Summer University (UEU). The agenda was followed by a presentation of the activities taking place during 2024 and the annual balance sheet, the budgets for 2025 were approved.
An extraordinary assembly was also scheduled and held during the day. It was decided to modify the statutes of the association to accommodate a new type of partner, it was decided to create a figure called collaborating partner, i.e. the collaborating partner is the person who liked to help the group but does not edit Wikipedia. In addition, it was decided to take steps to obtain special legal recognition for the association, it was approved to start the process of being designated as a public-interest organization.
In addition to the EWKE Association Assembly, we organized for the first time a Full Day Program: workshops, conferences and the opportunity to share experiences and socialize.
2025 Grant report to the Basque Government (in Basque).
2025 was the second year of the 2024-2027 strategy. This strategy has set out a number of goals for 2027 and defined a set of indicators to achieve them. We could ascertain that we are exceeding expected figures at a good pace.
500,000 articles for the Basque Wikipedia. We should have created 37,000 new articles since 2024, and 52,404 have been created so far.
Women's biographies have increased considerably.
Thanks to the work done, Basque language has won two positions in the ladder of the Wikipedias with most articles since January 2024, and Basque Wikipedia is already the 32nd largest one.
Women's presence on Wikipedia. 30,000 female articles by 2027, one third of all biographies. At the beginning of 2024, the biographies of women were 17,175, and those of men were 44,912. By the end of the year, there were 28.500 women (34.99 per cent) and 56,077 men. The driving force behind these results is the work of WikiEmakumeok. They meet weekly in Oiartzun and Durango. One of the goals established by the Basque Wikimedians User Group is to foster and promote these groups by helping the creation of similar groups when help is requested.
Txikipedia corpus. The objective for 2025 was to create 900 articles during the year, reaching 7,500 in total. We added 1,483 articles in 2025 and, at the end, 9,120 articles were created.
Further insight of the Basque Country:
Improvement of the municipalities of the Basque Country. Additional list articles have been generated to account for electoral information by municipality.
The demographic data of the municipalities of the Basque Country now are automatically taken from Wikidata.
To automatically display these demographic data, historical census data have been uploaded to Wikidata, including those produced by Basque official services like Eustat and Nastat, as well as those collected by the Spanish INE between 1900 and 1991. Thus, it ranks among the best in the world for demographic information in Wikidata about the municipalities of Southern Basque Country.
We have generated semi-automated population maps that will be dynamically renewed as the census is renewed.
Considering the articles about the Basque Country, there are many more articles geolocated on Wikipedia in Basque than in Spanish ad French Wikipedias.
In the education domain, several projects have been carried out in different areas.
At the university level, the Education Program has been present in 38 different subjects, with 725 students participating. At least 350 articles have been created, and more than 3,100,000 characters (about 450,000 words) have been added. We have addressed a variety of topics, such as paralympic sports, history, philosophy, artificial intelligence, computer science, biology, biochemistry...
In Secondary Education, the goals have been the use of learning situations, the use of Ikusgela videos and the promotion of Txikipedia. We have collaborated with 24 ikastolas integrated in the Federation of Ikastolas, as well as with the Oteitza Lizeo Politeknikoa, Herrikide of Tolosa, Lizeo Santo Tomas, and in Labourd, secondary education establishments. Additionally, the Erasmus+ project is now finished and our goal is to keep collaborating with the Zumaia BHI secondary school center and, if possible, also with Geoparkea.
Wikikasi: learning situations. With the collaboration of Talaios Cooperative we have already published six learning situations, two for 1st and 2nd level in Secondary Education and the remaining four projects for the second cycle. Talaios Kooperatiba and Badalab presented the learning situation "Digital Challenges" at the Durango Fair.
Similarly, there has been activity in subtitling these videos. We have a total of 269 videos published, all of which add up to 473 subtitles. There exist now 20 languages with at least one subtitled video. The full range of subtitles are listed on a specific page in Commons, WikiProject Subtitling Ikusgela.
Finally, with regard to communication, the following have been done during 2025:
Creation of a newsletter in order for the teachers to learn about the new videos released in Ikusgela.
On the International Day of the Basque language, the videos on Basque culture received 500 visits between 8 am and 10 am.
When the philosopher Joxe Azurmendi passed away on July 1, 2025, its Ikusgela video was widely distributed on social media and private messaging, reaching more than 2,500 views.
566 wikipedia articles have at least one Ikusgela video. All these pages have received 674,196 visits in 2025, with an average of 1,847 visits per day.
EWKE has collaborated with emerging WikiEmakumeok groups, in towns such as Beasain, Sestao. Support has been provided with projects, as well as technical assistance. In addition, we have participated in the project of portraits of forgotten women. In 2024, we created a project to reach 30,000 women articles, and 33% of all biographies, with a deadline in 2027. Yet it is a pleasure for us to highlight that at the end of 2025 women accounted for a 34.99% of all biographies, a goal we have achieved two years before the expected deadline.
As of December 2025, the Txikipedia project had about 9,000 articles. Last summer, the campaign "Edit Txikipedia" was launched and about 320 articles were edited. This corrective action will continue in the coming years.
The development of Txikipedia has continued during 2025 with the collaboration of different schools. Around 24 ikastolas, the Basque-language schools, have participated in the project, contributing to the creation of approximately 250 articles.
The public school of Zumaia has reached 1,500 Txikipedia articles during this academic year. Approximately, one in six articles of all the Txikipedia. In collaboration with the Pagoeta Natural Park, the students of 1st Baccalaureate year have worked on plant blindness and have fashioned articles on endangered plants in the Basque Country, as well as illustrations. In 2026, this learning situation will be carried out with the Soinuenea Foundation. Besides, also other schools in the area of Zumaia have contributed to Txikipedia.
Starting in 2020 and reinforced in 2023, Basque language has achieved the first place among all languages in Wikipedia. Basque language has been the language project that has increased the most in this category during the last five years, reaching the 18th position in early 2024. It was becoming more and more difficult to climb because the pre-existing languages have very strong encyclopedias, but thanks to steady work, in December 2025 we reached the 1st position after being the 9th language in summer. As we anticipated in August, 100% of the items were likely to exceed 30,000 bytes before the end of 2025, and so it happened.
For several months, Basque has been the language that has grown the most in this list. In 2025, we were the language that grew the most for 5 months, the second language that grew the most for 4 months, and the third for 3 months.
This year, two main lines of work have been carried out: the Public University of Navarre (UPNA-NUP) and the project History of the Basque Country in 100 objects. We have also developed other initiatives, as follows:
As a result of the collaboration agreement signed with the Public University of Navarre (UPNA) in 2024, we made new contributions in 2025 along the lines initiated during the first semester of the 2024-2025 academic year. In total, training sessions have been held in 8 subjects of different faculties and degrees, in which 210 students have participated, working on 59 articles.
In 100 objects of the history of the Basque Country, 16 of them are located in Navarre. Among them, 9 are located in 3 museums under the responsibility of the Government of Navarre and, despite the obstacles we encountered, we obtained permission to work with each of them. We have visited the Ethnological Museum of Navarre and the Museum of Carlism, obtaining the necessary images and information. In the case of the Museum of Navarre, the building was closed in 2025 due to the refurbishing works, so we could not make much headway. The rest of the objects are not in museums, and we have had to work on the ground to obtain information. Among them are the Hermitage of Legarda, the Sanctuary of Aralar, the Archaeological Center of Amaiur, Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles,...
Other initiatives:
Marathon of editing of women writers. As we did last year, this year we have organized a multilingual edition in collaboration with other Wikis in the Iberian Peninsula. Focusing on the Women’s Writers Day, the initiative aimed to help narrow the gender gap on Wikipedia. In this collaboration with the Wikipedias of Portugal, Extremadura and Galicia, one more year the Basque wikimedians have been the ones who have made the most editions. A total of 19 new biographies of women have been created and 57 translations have been made.
Perotx project. This year we have signed a collaboration agreement with the creation center of Adoain, in Urraulgoiti. In order to acquire knowledge of its towns and neighborhoods, various initiatives will be developed in the future.
Basque language planners. Together with the Basque language planners in Barañain, the students of the Alaitz school of Barañain developed in Txikipedia the biographies of the writers in Children's and Youth Literature of the 1980s.
Lakuntza Library. We organized a meeting aimed at all the agents of this municipality in Navarre. From there, the association Gure Nahia showed its willingness to train and collect the collection of old photographs in the town, document them and upload them to Wikimedia Commons.
Collection of photographs. Ekaitz Santazilia has been receiving photographs related to the history of the Basque language for 20 years. We started uploading and organizing photos to Wikimedia Commons in fall.
A list of 100 objects has been collected in collaboration with existing museums in the Basque Country. The aim of the list is to describe the history of the Basque Country through these objects, starting from the Palaeolithic to the contemporary world. in June 2025, we managed to close the list (almost) permanently, although there is still some controversy between some elements.
Each object will have its own category on Wikimedia Commons. Each museum will sign a VRT document when uploading some of their photos to Wikimedia Commons. Other photos will be taken directly.

On October 7, 2023, an extraordinary military escalation began, as shocking as it was bloody, in Palestine and the Middle East. Following the trail of the news, the Wikimedians got down to work. The result: the first Basque wikibook based on news. Starting from just one article, it eventually split into 25 articles created with the help of wikimedians, EWKE and other promoters and sponsors.

Estonia. In April, we organized a contest between Wikimedia Estonia, Wikimedia Spain and Amical Wikimedia to write about Estonia, with funding from the government of that country. The aim was to write about the culture, geography and history of Estonia in Basque, Spanish, Catalan and Galician. In Basque, 1,156 kilobytes were added, 52,146 words and 1,425 bibliographic references. In addition, 185 new articles were created and provided with 592 images. Interactive graphics. Due to a security issue, the Wikimedia Foundation canceled an opportunity to display graphics. It has been partially repaired in two years. Instead of the graph system that was used before, we have a new one, the chart, although at the moment it is not as powerful as the previous one. Thanks to this, in December 2025, 36,780 of our articles had some interactive graphic, significantly more than the languages around them. Demographic data are displayed on many of these graphs. Another diagram includes the annual passenger statistics of the Bilbao Metro. Some of the graphs we had of climatic data are still not visible.
Basque names of birds. The Basque Ornithological Commission established the names of 2,200 birds in Basque, which forced numerous adaptations to Wikidata and Wikipedia during the spring. (See: EBO News, EWKE Message, and WikiProject.)
