About Black Lunch Table (BLT)

[edit]

Black Lunch Table (BLT) is a nonprofit artist collaboration with over sixteen years of ongoing projects. BLT focuses on celebrating the lives and works of Black artists while addressing racial and gender bias on Wikipedia. By mobilizing African and global Wikimedians, BLT empowers communities to write their own histories and amplify underrepresented voices in art.

BLT hosts events such as Edit-a-thons, Photobooths, and Wikipedia translation sprints to provide participants with the skills and resources needed to create, update, and improve articles about Black artists.

Event Overview

[edit]

“Shadows to Spotlight” is a Wikipedia contest designed to increase visibility for Black artists whose stories are underrepresented online. Participants will:

  1. Create and expand Wikipedia articles about Black artists and cultural workers
  2. Translate articles into Kiswahili language for accessibility
  3. Upload relevant images to Wikimedia Commons
