Participants: 24 attendees from Igbo Wiki Fan Clubs, Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, and Imo State University
Workshop Overview
The Build Your Own Road Map for Igbo Language Digital Activism workshop was a two-day event designed to empower participants with the knowledge and tools needed to promote and preserve the Igbo language through digital platforms. The workshop combined interactive discussions, expert presentations, and hands-on training to foster digital language activism using Wikimedia projects.
Day 1: Interactive Sessions & Experience Sharing
Date: May 31, 2025
The first day focused on introducing participants to digital language activism and its significance in preserving indigenous languages. Key activities included:
- Introduction to Wikimedia Projects: Participants explored how platforms like Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and Wikiquote can be leveraged to document and digitize the Igbo language.
- Expert Presentations: A hybrid session featured insights from:
- Tochi Precious (Co-Founder, Igbo Wikimedians User Group)
- DnShitobu (Dagbani Wikimedians User Group)
Both speakers emphasized the importance of open-source tools in advancing digital language preservation.
- Experience Sharing: Linguistics and Igbo language students shared their academic and professional journeys.
Key takeaways included:
- Challenges: Stigmatization of indigenous language studies, lack of learning resources, and evolving academic demands.
- Success Stories: Career opportunities in translation, broadcasting, online tutoring, and freelance language services. This session served as both a motivational and educational exchange, encouraging participants to persist in their language advocacy efforts.
Day 2: Hands-On Training
