Project description

Project Idea & Description

This project proposes a one-day hybrid edit-a-thon to create and improve Wikipedia articles on notable women from Romania and Moldova, with a focus on underrepresented figures in science and the arts. The event might be hosted in partnership with a local educational institution (e.g., a university or public library) to provide resources and a venue.

The event combines a "Learn to Edit" workshop for beginners with a content sprint for experienced editors. By creating a welcoming, social environment, we aim to lower the barrier to entry for new contributors, particularly women, thereby addressing the gender gap in both content (articles about women) and participation (women editors).

Goals

  • Reduce the Content Gender Gap: Create or improve at least 15 articles about women's personalities on Romanian Wikipedia.
  • Community Engagement: Onboard 10–15 new editors (targeting 50%+ female participation) through hands-on training.
  • Partnership: Strengthen ties with Metropolitan Library of Bucharest to facilitate future GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) initiatives.

Planned Activity

Pre-event (Feb 23 – Mar 1)

  • Curate a list of "Red Links" (missing articles) focusing on women scientists and artists, aligned with the Wikimărțișor article list.
  • Promote the event via social media and partner institution newsletters.

Event Day (Proposed: Saturday, March 6, 2026)

  • 10:00 – 11:00: Introduction to Wikipedia & Gender Gap presentation.
  • 11:00 – 13:00: Editing Tutorial & Research Session (using library resources).
  • 13:00 – 14:00: Pizza & Socializing Break (building community).
  • 14:00 – 16:00: Edit-a-thon sprint & uploading results to the #wikimartisor campaign dashboard.

Post-event (Mar 7 – Mar 15)

  • Review new editors' contributions and provide feedback.
  • Final report submission.

Timeline

  • Preparation: February 20–28, 2026 (Logistics, promotion).
  • Execution: March 6, 2026 (Event Day).
  • Wrap-up: March 15, 2026 (Reporting results).

Contribution to Reducing the Gender Gap

This project directly tackles the "double gender gap":

  • Content: By focusing solely on women's biographies, we increase the visibility of female role models in Romanian history/science.
  • Contributors: The event is designed as a social, low-pressure workshop, a format proven to be more effective in recruiting and retaining non-male editors compared to solitary online contests.
