- Project description
- Women of Chișinău: Culture & Politics Online Edit Marathon 2026 is a two-week remote editing campaign (March 7–21) coordinated by Friends of the „B.P. Hasdeu” Municipal Library, aimed at improving the representation of women from Moldova in culture, arts, literature, education, civic activism, and politics on Wikipedia and related Wikimedia projects.
At present, many Wikipedia articles about women from Chișinău are either very short or entirely missing. Numerous entries contain only basic biographical details, limited references, and little contextual information. Important figures from cultural life, civic activism, education, and municipal politics remain underrepresented or undocumented. The campaign seeks to expand content while improving quality, reliability, and visibility.
The „B.P. Hasdeu” Municipal Library plays a key role in preserving the documentary memory of Chișinău through its local history collections and bibliographic resources. The Library has experience in Wikimedia initiatives such as 1Lib1Ref and Wikimărțișor, where librarians added reliable references, created new articles, and strengthened Romanian-language resources online.
All 27 branches of the Municipal Library will participate remotely on alternating days. Librarians, researchers, partners, students, and interested citizens will be encouraged to contribute flexibly. Library spaces will also function as welcoming community editing hubs.
The Library’s Training Center will coordinate the campaign, providing mentoring, guidance, and quality oversight. The structure of the two weeks will include:
- Editing sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays
- Coordination and mentoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays
- A weekly video call every Friday for progress review and peer exchange
An introductory online training session will be organized for librarians at the beginning of the campaign. At least one additional introductory session will be offered for non-librarian participants to ensure inclusive access to Wikimedia editing skills. Experienced librarian-editors will act as mentors throughout the marathon.
By combining professional expertise with community participation, the campaign aims to attract at least 10 new editors, strengthen a sustainable local Wikimedia community, reduce the gender content gap, and generate well-referenced, substantial articles reflecting the contributions of women to the cultural and political life of Chișinău.
