CIS-A2K/Events/Thematic digitisation project with Lek Ladki Abhiyan and Public Library, Satara
Backgound
[edit]CIS-A2K and Pune Nagar Vachan Mandir jointly organised a digitisation workshop for libraries and digitisation partners in Maharashtra on 15 May 2024. In this workshop, we proposed the idea of completing digitisation of all copyright free books by one author and promoting this on special occasions. Our digitisation partner Lek Ladaki Abhiyan's coordinator participated in this workshop. They have taken up this idea and started working on it. They have decided to complete the digitisation of all books written by eminent freedom fighter, social activist and writer, Pandurang Sadashiv Sane popularly known as Sane Guruji.
Objectives
[edit]In the Centenary Silver Jubilee year (125th birth anniversary) of Sane Guruji, a project has been started to create a database of his entire literature and books in digital form and upload all this knowledge on the Wikimedia projects to make it freely available to the world wide community. Lek Ladki Abhiyan has taken lead to collaborate with other public libraries, like-minded organisations and scholars to execute the following action plan -
- Step 1 - Prepare an accurate list of all the works. Once this metadata is created in Excel, it will then be directly incorporated into the Wikidata project in the form of structured databases through the OpenRefine tool. This will make information freely available to anyone around the world. Also this material will be connected with all the libraries of the world.
- Step 2 - Identifying the books already available on the internet from this list. Integrating PDF links from Wikimedia Commons and other websites. Downloading PDFs from elsewhere other than Wikimedia projects.
- Step 3 - Digitizing remaining books which are not available. For this purpose select books published before January 1964 which are in copyright free domain.
- Step 4 - Uploading verified PDF files to Wikimedia Commons, Creating separate categories and adding metadata.
- Step 5 - E-book conversion of these books as well as audio book creation in Wikisource project.
Event details
[edit]The project was launched on 15 August 2024, Independence Day, by uploading eight books and databases at Muktangan, Satara. On this occasion, the Public library organized an exhibition of all Sane Guruji's books. The program was organized at Muktangan, Satara on behalf of Center for Internet and Society, Lake Ladki Abhiyan, Savitribai Phule Women's Archive, City Public Library Satara and Sane Guruji 125 Mission, Mumbai. On this occasion, some readers talked about the selected books. A group of folk artists created spirit in the program by performing the songs of Guruji. Some members have planned an initiative to make these books available in audio format as well.
Follow-up
[edit]The organisation has started the listing of all the groups and individuals following the thoughts of Sane Guruji to get original, first publications for digitisation. We are also planning to approach the educational institutes to explore the completed projects related to Sane Guruji's literature. The meetings cum open knowledge sessions with libraries are planned in collaboration with Sane Guruji 125 Mission, Mumbai. The workshop on audio books is also proposed.
