In 2024 and 2025, we conducted two user surveys on LimeSurvey in order toː

  • Evaluate the usefulness of the Collaboration List
  • Determine which changes we should make
  • See what people think of the changes we made.

Below, we will share the results of our findings.

Participation

  • In our first survey (launched in May 2024), we received a total of 48 responses.
  • In our second survey (launched in February 2025), we received a total of 66 responses.
  • Both surveys were available in the following languagesː Arabic, English, French, Indonesian, and Spanish.

Satisfaction rates following changes

Between the first and second survey, we made 4 changes to the Collaboration List, and then we asked survey respondents to rate the usefulness of each of the changes (with 1 being the lowest rating and 5 as the highest rating). Overall, the 4 changes received a satisfaction score of 4.07 (rounded) out of 5 (arithmetic mean). Here is the breakdown, ordered by popularity:

  • The most popular change was creating separate sections between ongoing and upcoming events. It scored an arithmetic mean of 4.17.
  • The second most popular change was adding the search filter for the wiki of an event. It scored an arithmetic mean of 4.13.
  • The third most popular change was creating a way for organizers to specify if an event was a test or live event, so that we could filter out test events from the Collaboration List. It scored an arithmetic mean of 4.08.
  • The fourth most popular change was adding a search filter for the topic of an event. It scored an arithmetic mean of 3.89.

We asked respondents: “Overall, with the 4 changes we have implemented to the Collaboration List, do you think it will be easier for people to find events that interest them now?” We received 53 responses, and 100% voted “Yes.” We received zero “No” votes.

Usage

  • People report using the Collaboration List more often. In both surveys we asked: "How often do you use the Collaboration List to find events? Survey respondents had the following options: Very often, Sometimes, Not often, and I have never used it. Between the two surveys, we saw the people reporting the frequency of "Sometimes" go from 20% to 30%, among other findings.
    • In Survey 1, we received a total of 49 responses. The rounded responses were, in order of popularityː "Not often" (45%, 22 responses), "I have never used it" (35%, 17 responses), and "Sometimes" (20%, 10 responses). Nobody said "Very often."
    • In Survey 2, we received a total of 66 responses. The rounded responses were, in order of popularityː ː "Not often’ (38%, 25 responses), "Sometimes" (30%, 20 responses), "I have never used it" (20%, 13 responses), and "Very often" (12%, 8 responses).

Ease in finding events

  • People report greater ease in finding events that interest them after the changes we made to the Collaboration List. In both surveys, we asked: "How easy is it to find events that interest you on the Collaboration List?" Survey respondents were asked to give a rating between 1 and 5 (with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest). Between the two surveys, we found the arithmetic mean increase from 3.19 to 3.81 (19.4% increase) and we saw the median rating go from 3 to 4 (20% increase).
    • In Survey 1, we received a total of 32 responses to the question. The arithmetic mean score was 3.19 and the median score was 3. No respondents gave a 1 or 5 rating. The most responses were for a rating of 3 (56.25%, 18 responses), followed by rating of 4 (31.25%, 10 responses), and then a rating of 2 (12.5%, 4 responses).
    • In the Survey 2, we received a total of 53 responses to the question. The arithmetic mean score was 3.81 and the median score was 4. While we received no ratings of 5 in Survey #1, we received nearly equal votes for a rating of 3 and 5 in survey #2, with a slight lead for 3. In total, the votes were a rating of 3 (34%, 18 votes), a rating of 5 (32%, 17 votes), a rating of 4 (26%, 14 votes), a rating of 2 (6%, 3 votes), and a rating of 1 (2%, 1 vote).

Desired changes

  • We learned about highly desired changes to the Collaboration List.
    • In survey #1, we asked: “What search filters would be most useful for finding the events you are interested in, if they were available?” We allowed people to pick multiple options, and we received a total of 133 responses. The responses in order of popularity were wiki of event (19 votes), languages supported (18 votes), focus area of the event, such as adding images or adding references (17 votes), type of event, such as edit-a-thon or meetup (16 votes), topic of event (13 votes), country of event (13 votes), association organizing the event, such as Wikimedia Poland (13 votes), city of event (12 votes), targeted contributors of the event, such as moderators or organizers (8 votes), and whether the event will have support or training for newcomers (4 votes).
    • In survey #1, we also heard that people wanted a more intuitive way to separate ongoing and upcoming events and some people thought that there could be a better name than “Collaboration List.”
    • In survey #2, we asked: “Right now, you can only see the Collaboration List on the Special:AllEvents page. We are considering expanding access to the Collaboration List, so you can see it on other wiki pages. Where do you think it would be most useful to see the Collaboration List?” We allowed people to pick multiple options, and we received a total of 132 responses. The responses in order of popularity were on a WikiProject page (32 votes), on an event page (29 votes), on a wiki homepage (27 votes), on the wiki page of an affiliate (23 votes), on a portal for a topic or focus area (16 votes), and other (5 votes).
    • In survey #2, we asked people for suggested name changes for the Collaboration List. Some ideas includedː Event Calendar, Community List, Partner List, Community Collaboration, Activity List, Wiki Agenda, Wiki Plan, Collab List, and many more. Some people also said that they found the current name to be appropriate.
