Does CapX drive people away from on-wiki interactions?
Absolutely not. CapX is deeply integrated with the Wikimedia ecosystem and is designed to facilitate capacity-building within the Movement, not replace on-wiki interactions.
CapX brings together information that is already distributed across Wikimedia platforms:
- Capacities come from Wikidata and Metabase, with translations managed through those environments.
- Software and interface translations are managed through TranslateWiki.
- The code and interface are hosted on Toolforge, within Wikimedia Cloud Services.
- News, projects, and profile information are connected to Wikimedia platforms such as Diff, Commons, and Wikidata.
- Messages are sent through Meta-Wiki and, therefore, offer the same privacy and options.
In other words, CapX creates a single space where information from across the Wikimedia ecosystem can be found, filtered, and connected based on skills and capacities.
How does CapX’s messaging feature work?
CapX’s messaging feature makes it easier to find people with relevant skills and contact them, while keeping communication within the Wikimedia ecosystem.
Messages are sent through Meta-Wiki, either to a person’s Talk page or, when an email address is connected, by email. CapX does not store the content or title of these messages. It only keeps a basic log of the interaction, such as the date, sender, and recipient.
CapX therefore helps users discover and connect with mentors and experienced editors without creating a separate communication system outside Wikimedia.

Is the CapX an open platform? How can I access my data?
Yes. CapX is an open platform.
To access information on CapX, users must have a Wikimedia user account, as access to the tool is done through Wikimedia Unified Login. Then it is possible to access profiles and data information by navigating through the platform. Access to the complete and structured dataset, however, is protected, providing an additional layer of security against data scraping.
Partners can access the complete dataset through a dedicated portal, where they can analyze the data to better serve their communities, as well as create and manage recognition badges and Mentorship forms. The access to this portal is also done through Wikimedia Unified Login.
Is CapX's API open? How can I integrate or contribute?
Yes, the CapX API is also open.
The API allows developers and organizations to build integrations, tools, and new uses based on CapX's data and functionalities. Developers can also contribute bug fixes and maintenance through GitHub. Significant changes and new features should be discussed with and approved by the CapX Committee.

Who is the Capacity Exchange for?
The CapX platform was created to provide additional support for volunteers, organizations, and initiatives across the Wikimedia Movement to find, share, and develop knowledge, skills, and capacities through peer connections.
It can be useful for newcomers looking for support, more experienced contributors looking for someone with a particular skill, people who want to offer their knowledge to others, and affiliates, hubs, and other Wikimedia initiatives looking for people or skills to support their activities.
CapX is also an asset for community managers, leaders, and program organizers, who can use aggregated data from the platform to better understand the capacities, skills, languages, and geographic distribution present in their communities and identify potential opportunities for collaboration and capacity development.
You do not need to be an expert or use CapX regularly. The idea is that your profile can make your skills discoverable when an opportunity or need arises.
Do I need to use the Capacity Exchange regularly?
No. CapX is designed to be used when you need to find someone who can help you.
Once you create your profile and add information about your skills, languages, location, and other capacities, you don’t need to use the platform regularly. Your profile can be discovered by people looking for those skills, and you’ll receive a notification through your Wikimedia account if someone contacts you.
When you need to find someone, simply use the Explore feed to filter and discover people who may be able to help.
Is the Capacity Exchange a Wikimedia Foundation project?
No. The Capacity Exchange is a community-based project that emerged from discussions around the Wikimedia Movement Strategy, specifically to respond to Recommendation 6.
Although CapX received funding from the Wikimedia Foundation in the past and is partnered with some of its initiatives, it remains an independent community project, with governance and decision-making independent of the Foundation.
CapX is governed by an International Advisory Committee open to the community, with representatives from affiliates and communities around the world. Wikimedia Brasil has coordinated the project and its technical development since November 2022, while CapX remains an international initiative serving the Wikimedia Movement as a whole.

Can I add a photo to my CapX profile?
Yes. However, profile photos can only be added via Wikidata's items.
If you have a personal item on Wikidata (see Wikidata's notability criteria), make sure to add the same username you use on CapX to your item using the Wikimedia username property (P4174).
Then, in your CapX profile settings, check the option “Display my Wikidata item photograph on profile.”
The Wikidata item associated with your username will be automatically searched and—if found—the related image will be displayed on your CapX user profile.
Please note that creating a Wikidata item requires meeting Wikidata's notability policy.
We use Wikidata for profile photos because it is supported by a large and active community of volunteer editors. The CapX team does not have the capacity to review images uploaded directly by users to ensure that they are appropriate, non-offensive, and not incorrectly linked to a different person.
If you don't have a Wikidata item or don't want to relate it to an image, then we are sorry to inform that you will have to use avatars on your CapX user profile.
- You can translate capacities and their descriptions on each skill card, in the Capacity Directory, or on the Translate! page.
We created a step-by-step tutorial in the User Guide and have provided all the direct links to make it easier.
Why wasn't it built on Meta-Wiki?

The Capacity Exchange project started with a voluntary working group of Wikimedians, following a pitch at a Wikimedia European Affiliates meeting.
In the initial phase of the project, this group of European affiliates conducted extensive research to assess the need for a different platform to develop the tool. They found that Meta-Wiki presented limitations in terms of searchability, information discoverability, and effectiveness as a tool for facilitating individual connections.
The group then formulated the concept, taxonomy, and pilot platform for the Capacity Exchange. Project activities and coordination were transitioned to Wikimedia Brasil in November 2022.
Can I suggest new capacities for the Directory?
Yes, please! The team is open to suggestions for new capacities, and we want the community to feel represented in the available capacities. So please reach out to capx
wmnobrasil.org or do so directly through the Capacity Directory at the bottom of the page.
The Capacity Exchange’s Capacity Directory was derived from the Skills Directory proposed by the Let’s Connect Peer Program. It was based on community input, which suggested the creation of more general categories for initial connections.
It is worth noting that the team is working with the Volunteer Supporters Network Hub, the EduWiki Hub, and the Language Diversity Hub to expand or better define the list in order to include capacities relevant to their areas of work.
What are the benefits of using CapX’s Mentorship feature?
CapX helps partner organizations run mentorship programs more securely and efficiently:
- Secure data: Mentorship data is stored in encrypted form within Wikimedia Cloud Services.
- Shorter forms: Information already available in participants’ CapX profiles can be reused, reducing repetitive questions and making applications easier to complete.
- Better community insights: As more community members use CapX, organizations can better understand existing capacities, languages, and skill-development needs to inform their activities and planning.
How does the collaboration work? The partner organization defines and manages the mentorship program, while CapX provides the infrastructure for collecting and securely managing applications. Existing profile information can be used to simplify the application process, and the resulting data can support participant selection, matching, and program planning.
Where do the form responses go, and who has access?
Form responses are stored in the Partner Portal in encrypted form. This means that only the partner who holds the access key can view the responses. To access them, the partner simply needs to enter the access key in the Partner Portal and download the responses as a CSV file.

What should I do if the tool isn't working properly?
Well, that shouldn't happen.
However, the tool is live and continues to be improved and updated weekly by the technical development team.
Therefore, when you encounter difficulties using the tool, try deleting your history and cache, logging out, and logging back in. This will ensure that your browser is accessing the latest version of the software. If refreshing doesn't solve the problem, try changing your browser and device. It is also important to note that, by being hosted at toolforge, the tool is also subject to its eventual instabilities – so try going back later.
If you still experience issues, you can submit a bug report through the tool capx.toolforge.org/report_bug or email the team (capx
wmnobrasil.org). In this case, remember to mention when the error occurred and which browser and device you were using, as this information can help us find the problem faster.
Access the CapX User Guide to see how to report a bug in detail.
