The banner does not have to run for the whole time. The facilitation team would like to replicate what was done last Board election.

Discussion[edit]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

  • I've created the campaign and both banners (desktop, mobile). I've changed the texts to what seemed correct to me 17 August 2021 23:59 UTC (see this preview). I've set the banner diet to 5 impressions and implemented resetting the cookies after one week so that it will then be shown again (which is my standard setting; if you need other values, please let me know). There has never been a banner for non-logged in users as suggested here so I am hesitant to create another campaign and banners: I don't think that we should notify millions of readers about our elections when they are not elegible, just to notify a handful which forgot to login.
  • @JKoerner (WMF): In order to enable the election banner campaign, I need an approval that everything looks correct and the right SecurePoll link. //CC @Ciell and Ата:DerHexer (Talk) 11:57, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • @DerHexer: This is great. Everything looks correct. Thank you for making the campaign and the updates. For the link: should the link direct to the voting page on Meta? I don't have the precise SecurePoll link yet but it will be on the Voting page once receive it. The Voting page will have all voting information (SecurePoll instructions, details about Single Transferable Vote, eligibility, and more). JKoerner (WMF) (talk) 18:08, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    @JKoerner (WMF): You're welcome! :)
Wrt to the landing page: It's a requirement by CentralNotice administrators that all banner should only link to pages which are already translated into the languages where the banners will be delivered or the banner invites viewers to help with translations (which the current banner at least partly does). As far as I can see and also remember, the current SecurePoll link takes you to the multi-lingual voting page (en, de).
The metawiki page is English-only at the moment and should be marked for translation first (Meta:Babylon, mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation example), translation administrators can help you (I could do so, too, but there is plenty of WMF staff who is capable of doing that). Once this is done, I could change the link to the Voting page. Nonetheless, please form an opinion whether the previous way without an additional page on metawiki where voters might also get lost or the metawiki voting page will be better. @JKoerner (WMF): The joy of cloning translatable banners has certainly also reached you. ;) I wanted to let you know that probably due to some poor CSS, the banner on frwikisource looks pretty broken. I don't think that a hotfix is necessary. It's still functional. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:34, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DerHexer: is this something you need a French speaker to fix? If so, Mahuton should be able to help today. Best, JKoerner (WMF) (talk) 12:23, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
JKoerner (WMF), DerHexer the issue is not the translation. It is more about the styling but weird that it only happens on frwikisource. MPossoupe (WMF) (talk) 12:45, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, DerHexer for continuing to support this. I hope you are well. Best, JKoerner (WMF) (talk) 14:05, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Just what I said, “due to some poor CSS”. ;) Likely some stuff on fr:s:MediaWiki:Common.js or fr:s:MediaWiki:Common.css. I think that Jackie meant that you could help with translating the problem into French for the local community to get it fixed. But I don't think it's worth to dig deeper into that. @Jackie: Thanks, I've feeling well again. :) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 17:52, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DerHexer: A (final) request from the facilitation team: we would like to make some changes to the banner. This is what we would like to do:

  • The vanishing of the banner is controlled by a cookie. This cookie is invalidated 7 days after an editor has seen it the first time. We would like to "reset" the cookie (maybe by replacing it with a new one?) three days before voting ends, so every visitor will see the message once again.
  • Along with this we would like the "newborn banner" to have some slight changes:
    • Please change the font of the text to be bold/big.
    • We would like to change the backgroundcolor for somewhat more contrast.

I know this is a lot, but I really would appreciate your help. Does this work out? What information do you need from me to make that happen? Thank you very much, DBarthel (WMF) (talk) 19:29, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @DBarthel (WMF):, the banner is already quite bold and "in your face" imho, especially with the yellow highlighting. There are more friendly ways to attract renewed attention, in this case for instance using a single line of text instead of two, losing that nasty yellow marker, and adding a nice (colored) icon on the right instead of on the left.
Please also note that a ping only works when you add your signature in the same edit (that triggers the notification). Ciell (talk) 19:38, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Ciell:, @DerHexer:. I get you and I understand your point. We want to avoid changing the general design of the banner for now by readjusting it's elements as this process would take to long. And you are right concerning the bold text, that's sufficient currently. The general color of the box is very modest right now and thus I would like to make it somewhat more visible, for example by using rgb(240,255,240). Mild, friendly and surely not to alarming, but clearly a difference. I am not sure how dropping the yellow marker and single-lining the text might help to renew attention? Best, DBarthel (WMF) (talk) 06:27, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@DBarthel (WMF): I can reset the cookie three days before the end of the elections. Is this now? Can you ping me when it should be done? The chosen color does not seem to increase the contrast, it looks worse to me, to be honest. For the sake of not invalidating previous translations, we should work with these two lines. The text is already bold so that only increasing their size makes sense to me. Here you can check the banner as they are requested. But as I said, I'd return to the white-ish background. Please let me know what you think about it. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 12:02, 27 August 2021 (UTC) PS: Banner link for me.[reply]
@DerHexer: - Thank you very much for your advice. I completely agree with you concerning the color, let's drop it. I guess making the second line big as you suggested should be sufficient. Concerning the cookie: the correct "reset"-date is not today, but tomorrow, on 23:59 UTC, August 28th. That is 1:59 in the morning for both of us, if there is something like a time-switch I guess that would be very good for our sleep, else we have to stay awake for a while then ... :) DBarthel (WMF) (talk) 12:31, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
