Discussion[edit]

  • Support Support The competition is now in its seventh year. The banner is very important because most photographers learn about the competition through it. JukoFF (talk) 19:49, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support The banner is very important so the most photographers will learn about the competition through it. Just 28 March 2022
  • Support Support The banner will draw attention to the competition. --HalanTul (talk) 02:57, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong support Strong support Certainly! An international competition that has been held annually since 2015. Thanks to the competitions, tens of thousands of unique photographs illustrate Wikipedia articles.--Ctac (talk) 08:51, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Oppose This competition is organized together with the "Nauka" TV channel, an offspring of VGTRK, the Russian state-owned broadcaster that has played pivotal role in advocating the ongoing military campaign in Ukraine. It's not the right time to advertise such a partner using the Central Notice. --Alexander (talk) 15:41, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support I think this is the most important contest, because it is most related to the core encyclopedia. And the Nauka TV is the best possible partner in Russia for this very important contest. It has absolutely nothing with politics, it's pure popular scientific channel, it's about knowledge, not about politics. Dr Bug (Vladimir V. Medeyko) 09:05, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have written evidence that the money received for this competition do not come from VGTRK? That they do not come from the Russian government? Can you share this evidence with the community? --Alexander (talk) 09:35, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Joint-Stock Company Nauka TV is owned mostly by Joint-Stock Company Digital Technologies (which is owned by VGTRK), so the ownership is indirect. Digital Tehcnnologies seems to be a self-financing company. However, I don't see why should I prove: even if there are some governmental money, it only for the good, because it means that these money will be spent on free knowledge, and therefore will NOT be spent on war. Dr Bug (Vladimir V. Medeyko) 12:24, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You can build a bridge and comfort yourself with the fact that the money is spent for the bridge, not for building tanks, but it won't take long before tanks will drive over this bridge. -- Alexander (talk) 14:07, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And even if your money is from some other, non-governmental source, taxes paid from these prizes are a direct funding of the war. -- Alexander (talk) 14:45, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm absolutely convinced that free reliable neutral science-based knowledge prevents and stops wars. Wikimedia RU issued a detailed statement on this. Dr Bug (Vladimir V. Medeyko) 19:43, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

Hi JukoFF, is the banner still relevant for you? I can set up a banner if you'd like: am I reading correct you only want to target anonymous users? And 'multiple languages' = English and Russian? When also targetting other languages (like English), it would be great to have some information available in that language on the English landing page (as you did previous years) as well. Ciell (talk) 06:48, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

And would it make sense to also target Commons, since this is a photograph competition?
Preview for RU, preview for EN (for which I posted the question on the landing page above already). Ciell (talk) 08:17, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi Ciell. Yes, the banner is still very relevant. Yes, the banner is only for anonymous users. I made the contest page in English and put it in the appropriate banner.

Regarding Commons banner will be correct to hang for Russian IP. Since only citizens of Russia and the CIS will be able to get prizes.

I will be very grateful to you for your participation. JukoFF (talk) 09:08, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JukoFF, thanks! Did you check the banners, are the good to be enabled?
For targetting: I have set targetting to Russian IP's only, this is the same for Wikipedia as it is for Commons. Ciell (talk) 09:28, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ciell Yes, the banners open well, at least in my browsers. JukoFF (talk) 09:38, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great, I have turned them on. They will show 5 times every 5 days - I saw the diet was lower in 2020, but you've missed a few weeks already. ;-)
Good luck on the competition! Ciell (talk) 10:07, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much!!! JukoFF (talk) 10:18, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
