Community Feedback[edit]

  • As a community member I object to so many campaigns coming from India in such a short time. We are barely done with WLE campaign which ran for a month. There is a survey campaign request above this. WMF grants team had their own campaign. You all are doing a dis-service to the banners and keeping the projects ad-free. Centralnotice is not a permanent banner space for you or anyone to use whenever they want. We have to exercise better judgement and use it sparingly. Theo10011 (talk) 15:48, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Theo10011, I have changed the notice period to two weeks now starting from July 1st, 2016. WLE India campaign will be over by then, and this will be the only campaign targeting the Indian region as the survey campaign request is also pending WMF review. A reduced priority is also acceptable. While we understand the usage guidelines, please note that we don't come up with central notice requests throughout the year. WikiConference India is happening after a period of 5 years, and we are trying our best to reach out to the community. This central notice will help us get more quality proposals. --Ravi (talk) 12:52, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Ravi. I find the length acceptable. One more point, that I mentioned above. You added BN, PK and SL as target geographies for an india-only event. With the exception of Nepal, I believe all those countries will require visas and travel allowance, and invitation letter for people to attend. I don't believe you have the time, resources to finance international travel. I really think that would be a waste of CN usage. I suggest you modify the target geographies a bit and mention countries where travel is possible in such a short time or you have in your budget to finance the travel. Otherwise it's really a waste of CN.
I hope you notice you are requesting 2 campaigns on this very page alone. My response above applies. I hope you can come to some understanding about which is more important and find alternatives. I suggest merging the two campaigns. When you have approval for the survey, you can modify this campaign and add a link. Thanks. Theo10011 (talk) 19:29, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Theo10011, we didn't know that you can display different links under a same campaign. That is why we requested one campaign for each link. We have sought review from WMF legal team for our survey. Once it is approved, we can display the survey link together with this campaign request. So, we agree to merge these two campaign requests. If it is allowed, we would also like to display more conference related links in the same campaign (for example, request to register for the conference).
This is a conference not just for the Wikimedians in India but for all Wikimedians who contribute to Indian language projects. Punjabi, Bengali and Tamil Wikimedia projects have major presence in the neighboring countries. That is why we are targeting these countries too. We have already received scholarship applications from these countries. We have also adequately budgeted for travel from these countries. We are also prepared to handle visa issues. The WMF PEG team has approved the grant only after considering all these questions. With your experience working for WCI 2011, we invite you to contribute for WCI 2016 as well.
While I share your concern for banner blindness, please also note that the requests from India have been very impactful and justifies the use of central notice. The recently concluded Wiki Loves Earth India campaign has uploaded 32,464 images to Commons. This is one fourth of total images uploaded from all over the world. Needless to say, India leads by upload count. Through our central notice request for scholarship applications, we received 450+ applications from almost 20 communities. Many of these communities do not respond adequately if we just reach out to them by village pump, social media channels and mailing lists. That is the reason we are seeking help through central notice which ultimately helps the community to connect better and do impactful work.--Ravi (talk) 01:45, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
My concerns have been addressed. It's up to CN admins when they turn it on. Thanks. Theo10011 (talk) 05:38, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Central Notice Admin comments[edit]

Theo10011, I have reduced the campaign period to two weeks. Please also check my response above. --Ravi (talk) 12:52, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think this campaign is critical for the conference. @Theo10011: Are you okay with the changes?. Also we can keep the priority as normal and reduce the traffic to 50 %. I think we can even limit the number of times a banner shown to a particular user, but not sure on that because i never tried it before --Shanmugamp7 (talk) 15:36, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree Shanmugamp7 this is important so I am not opposing. A shorter length seems fine, also I think the target geographies could be modified to exclude other countries. I would also suggest merging the two campaigns they are requesting. It would be simple to just add a link somewhere or a line when they have approval for the survey I think. It would be easier for everyone. Thanks. Theo10011 (talk) 19:29, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Ravidreams and Dineshkumar Ponnusamy: Could you please comment on the target geographies?. If they have approval for the other campaign we can add a different banner in this campaign itself with equal weightage, so users will see either one of the banners instead of seeing same banner and traffic will also be limited in this way. --Shanmugamp7 (talk) 02:41, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
User:shanmugamp7, please check my comments in the community feedback section. I have also changed the dates for notice.--Ravi (talk) 01:46, 2 July 2016 (UTC)--Dineshkumar Ponnusamy (talk) 17:16, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have created and enabled this campaign with normal priority and 50% traffic with the above specified settings--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 05:51, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
