What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?[edit]

Description - This banner will be used to notify the public (i.e. readers) and community members from around the world that the sound logo contest submission period has begun. The team is aiming for at least 100 submissions from all over the world. There will be a follow-up banner in November or later to invite votes on the final 10 logos. Banner design and translations will be developed by the project team.

Metrics - Impressions limiting: 100%, Frequency cap: 3 for logged in, 2 for logged out, Reset after click

  • Hi @DerHexer: we'll have a close button in the final banner. For translations, we're doing Arabic, Bahasa, English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, and we'll match the banner language with the translated landing page and other content. We have thought about leaving the translation open for other contributions, but are also concerned that someone will see the banner in their language, but will be disappointed that the landing page isn't. What's your recommendation? Based on last week's conversation, I just updated the banner diet – 100%, with decreased frequency for logged in and out users. What do you think?     @MPourzaki (WMF): It's pretty common practice to have banner texts translated but only a reduced number of languages of the landing page. Translators could decide to include that into their translations (“English landing page”) or could help with localization of the landing page (which should generally be translatable beyond the languages you provide).     @MPourzaki (WMF): What do you mean with “Impressions limiting: 100%, Frequency cap: 3 for logged in, 2 for logged out, Reset after click”? I'm not sure about the frequency cap.     @DerHexer, banner 1 says "learn more" and banner 2 is "enter now." Our hope is that if people click on "learn more," from then on they will only see "enter now." Otherwise, they will see "learn more" 3 times if they are a logged in user (targeting community members more) and 2 for logged out readers. What do you think? Central Notice admin comments[edit]

  • @MPourzaki (WMF): I've created a campaign and banner for registered users (3 times visible per week), and a campaign and banner for anonymous users (2 times visible per week).
    • The English texts are deposited in the banner pages. You can find the links where you can enter the translations into other languages in the banner previews (registered, anonymous); just change to the target language and submit your texts.
    • However, a sequence of banners as proposed (once banner 1 was clicked, banner 2 should be visible) has to be scripted somehow. But that's beyond my abilities. Please check the stuff I did so far and let me know.

    • Hi @DerHexer:, thank you so much for your work. I still get "you are not authorized to preview banners, but from the ones I see, things look great." Just a note that the Learn More banner and the Enter Now banner have different texts, please see uploaded visuals above. If the sequencing is complicated, how about we show Learn More for the first week and Enter Now for the remaining 3 weeks? Here is a link to our concept of the visuals. Thanks again for everything. @Ed Erhart (WMF): I've checked the changes and they look good to me now. Another developer already fixed the code so that my additional scripts should be doing. I have also checked if the change of text caused invalidation of the translations. Fortunately, this does not seem to be the case. If possible, provide text only once. Let me know when you have the landing page translated into more languages. The forwarding on local wikis to the translated landing page can be easily ammended by newly supported languages. If we don't add that to the banner texts, the readers will be taken to the English page first. (This only applies to translations of the landing page. Hopefully one of, if not the, last question for you, DerHexer! We'd like to change the banner wording to call out when we're in the last week of submissions (2022-10-03 to 10-10). I'm thinking all we'd need to do is edit the CNBanner: translation pages to add the new text, keeping the lengths similar, and we wouldn't have to ask you or anyone else with the appropriate userrights to take on any additional work. @Ed Erhart (WMF): Some thoughts about that: It's technically possible to replace the English text with a new one. I'm not sure if all translations will be automatically invalidated or not. The answer to that would not prevent the next step: Copying your translations of the new text into the supported languages. It's pretty likely that a translation administrator has to approve them to be published (for both banners = 16 clicks). If we assume that the other languages into which volunteers have translated the texts will be invalidated, likely the new English original text will be displayed (and translators encouraged to translate into their languages once again; an extra burden for them). If we assume that the other languages will not be invalidated, you are running the same banner with different meanings globally—maybe translations could be invalidated manually but I will not spend time on that. If new translations are favored, a manual clone of the banner might be the best choice (because cloning the banner would also clone all translations; which usually ends up in severe chaos). Thanks for all of the detail, DerHexer! The idea here is to change the language to encourage people who thought about submitting to do it ASAP. It'll be another short sentence with a button, nothing more. We've been getting a lot of submissions so far, and we want to make sure people understand that submissions will definitely be closed—we actually can't extend the deadline.
Our plan is to have translations for the nine languages we've been supporting, and Foundation staff like MPourzaki (WMF) can take on the burden of approving translations in other languages. With that in mind + everything you've said, I'm thinking that a manual clone of the banner makes the most sense and will cause the least disruption for y'all. (And I'm also thinking that my original idea was bad! :-) )

@Ed Erhart (WMF): I've set the regular campaigns to end on 3 October 23:59 UTC, we have a new campaign for registered users in the final week with the related banner, as well as a new campaign for anonymous users in the final week with the related banner. I have entered the old texts (without any translations). But you can start your preparations right now: Please enter the new texts on the banner pages in the input fields (you need to refresh with F5 to see the changes, sometimes you have to re-enter or refresh again; lovely software). Once the English text is correct, you can either click on the [ Help with translations! ] links in the preview or follow the Text/Learn links in the “Translatable banner messages” section. Please change to the target language and submit your translations, click publish on top of the page, etc. If you don't have permissions for any of these, let me know. Once everything is ready, please also ping me so that I can check it and enable the new campaigns. I could do the translations though, but I'll wait until English is updated. This is the message for both logged in and anonymous users for the final week of the contest: "Did you hear that? Only 1 week left to submit your entry for The Sound of All Human Knowledge. Help us find Wikimedia's sound logo by 10 October." If you are able to update the text, I'll run with the translations. Hey @Ciell, not urgent at all. How can I see how many languages– uploaded by us and organic ones led by volunteers–the sound logo banner was translated into? Hi @MPourzaki (WMF), I have not followed the campaign very closely, but looking at the admin interface there have been 4 banners active for the Sound logo contest. Let me link to the translation extension stats for them: 1 (reg), 2 (anon), 3 (anon final week), 4 (reg final week). (Make sure to check the bottom "Do not display languages which do not have any translations" and uncheck the default top option, and click 'show statistics' again)
Please realize, as I mentioned to you in the preparations of this contest, that there (still) is a bug that does not allow 'normal' users to review new translations. As far as I know, only CN admins and stewards can mark new translations as reviewed, so I am not sure how representative the language stats are for the number of translated messages that were actually seen by the readers. To get more specific banner statistics, you can put in a request for the research team through Phabricator: maybe they can be of more help. Ciell (talk) 08:43, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Final phase: voting[edit]

Hi @DerHexer: it's us again. Hope you've been well. The contest closed and participation has been beyond even our greatest expectations, surely in no small part thanks to the banners and their incredible reach. Thank you for leading that entire process for us. We received more than 3000 submissions from 2000+ participants in 135 countries!!! Couldn't be happier. The scoring phase is going on now and soon the selection committee will convene to choose 10 sounds that the movement will then vote on, which brings us to this request. Would you be able to clone the previous banner with the text "Your contributions are instrumental to free knowledge. Now, you can play your part in deciding The Sound of All Human Knowledge. [VOTE TODAY]". We will insert our 8 translations and leave the rest open for anyone interested. Let me know if we missed anything. Thanks again.
