Central Asian WikiCon 2025/Safety

These guidelines are provided to ensure your own and other participants' safety and well-being dirung the event. Please, read it carefully and don't hesitate to ask questions to the organizing team if something is unclear to you.

While being a capital of Uzbekistan and populated mostly by Uzbeks, Tashkent nowadays still remains as a multicultural, multireligious and rather diverse city. That status alligns well with our event purpose and spirit and provides suitable background to it.

Safety guidelines for participants

  • Local Norms and Customs: Familiarize yourself with the local customs, laws, religious and social practices in Uzbekistan upon arrival. Some norms can be usual and known for you and some may be a surprise — be sure to know in advance how to act and what to avoid to not to find yourself in a situation of public judgement or even a legal prosecution.
  • Transportation: Use trusted transportation methods recommended by the conference organizers at the venue page or well-reviewed ones. Be sure to upload one of the offline maps offered there to navigate yourself in the city with ease.
  • Update Software: Ensure all your devices are updated with the latest security patches.
  • Password Protection: Use strong, unique passwords for all your accounts. Consider a password manager.
  • Backups: Back up all information regularly and store it in a secure offsite location.
  • Protect Your Identity: Your online identity needs to be protected. The following resources could help you to stay safe:
  • Encrypted Messaging: Use encrypted messaging apps for communication.
  • Avoid Public Wi-Fi: Use ony trusted Wi-Fi spots (in the hotel or at the conference venue). If you must use it somewhere else, make sure to connect through a VPN.
  • Check Information: Be cautious of emails or messages asking for personal information or payments related to the conference. Always verify with known conference organizers. You can find organizers list and contacts at the Team page or just use our official email address CAWikiCon25@gmail.com.

Expected behavior

  • Behavior: Avoid public displays of excessive affection and respect personal boundaries. Be aware of person's willingness to interact with you before doing so. During interaction, consider others' personal space, manage the appropriate distance both for said reasons and to reduce risk of deseases transmission.
  • Cultural Awareness: Be aware of the others' cultural nuances, religious practices, and etiquette. Be respectful and open in your interactions — there'll be a lot of people from different cultural, religious and other background that may have different viewpoins.
  • Mutual respect: Be respectful even if you disagree with someone. Duscuss actions, ideas and concepts, but avoid discussing people. In case of a strong disagreement be polite and if this doesn't help — avoid interaction and report to the Trust and Safety volunteers on site or the Team members.

What to avoid

  • Do not harass others: Harassment, either verbal or physical is strictly prohibited. An incomplete list of things that could qualify as harassment:
  • Insulting others, including using slurs and stereotypes,
  • Sexual harassment, including commenting on others' bodies and making unwanted — even if well-meaning — sexual advances,
  • Making threats, both individual and general, and encouraging harm to others, including encouraging someone to self-harm,
  • Doxing and any other way of non-consentual revealing of the personal data,
  • Trolling and hounding.

Youth Safety

The Wikimedians of the Uzbek Language User Group are committed to ensuring a safe and positive experience for young attendees at this event. For this purpose, organizers and participants will follow these requirements:

  • People of age 14 or younger will not be allowed to register for the conference unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. People between the age of 15 and 18 will only be able to attend as part of a group with at least one responsible adult. Conference organizers will inform the responsible adult that young participants should not be left unattended during an event.
  • There will be no uninvited guests at the venue.
  • Conference organizers will have copies of the youth safety plan available for event attendees.

In addition, conference organizers are responsible for ensuring that their events comply with all local laws and regulations that apply to young attendees.

Trust and Safety volunteers

There is a team of dedicated volunteers whose purpose is to ensure the execution of these guidelines at the event. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your own or anyone else's safety, do not hesitate to ask them, or one of the team members for help and clarifications.
