Abstract:
In this session, we will explore how empowering minority language communities to take ownership of their own Wikimedia projects can help the development of more inclusive and representative knowledge, by highlighting the story of the Wayuu community, an indigenous group from Venezuela and Colombia, who launched their own Wikipedia after years of being stuck in the Incubator. Through cross-community collaboration and different strategies to help overcome the barriers smaller communities face, we’ll discuss how we can replicate similar initiatives in Central Asia, helping to diversify the digital knowledge landscape in the region. |

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of Central Asia?
By showing a successful example like the Wayuu Wikipedia, participants will learn how to overcome common barriers to developing Wikimedia projects in smaller communities that speak a minority language. Additionally, the session will offer strategies for fostering collaboration, building local capacities, and ensuring that diverse voices from Central Asia are represented globally. The idea is to inspire communities and provide them with the tools to take ownership of their digital knowledge creation |
