Abstract:

Machine translation caused major issues on the Uzbek Wikipedia after the WikiStipendiya project launched in 2022. In 2024, we took drastic measures, revising speedy deletion criteria and restricting the Content Translation tool to advanced users. This session explores these challenges, focusing on Uzbek and the role of LLMs.

Level of advancement: medium to advanced

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of Central Asia?

Unlike widely spoken global languages, the indigenous languages of Central Asia lag behind in the development of LLMs, NMT and AI broadly. This session will explore what is being done in Uzbekistan to bridge this gap and enhance language technology for smaller languages. We will also examine the role of WMF projects in shaping LLMs, NMT, and the broader impact of AI on language preservation and accessibility. This session will be valuable for anyone interested in translation, AI, and machine learning, particularly in the context of underrepresented languages.
